The Amistad guessing game became the Amistad whacking game today at the Bassmaster Elite Series season opener in Del Rio, Texas. The hold-off from the first wave of spawners didn't seem to matter, and things transformed into a heavyweight day from staging fish. And the difference – like last year – was the big bite.

Or more correctly, "big bites."

That's because Steve Kennedy leads after day 1 with a massive 36-10, but his biggest was "only" 8 pounds. Combined with two 7s though, it was enough to overcome a 9-pounder and a 12 1/2 from 2nd-place rookie Scott Campbell.

Campbell's bag weighed in at 36-00, and he trails Kennedy by 10 ounces.

The 3rd-place spot currently belongs to Kevin Short with 33-06. In 4th is Terry Scroggins with 30-12, and Edwin Evers is 5th with 29-11.

Here's a look at the rest of the Top 12:

6. Ken Cook: 28-15
7. Alton Jones: 28-07
8. Cliff Pace: 28-03
9. Mike Iaconelli: 27-09
10. Dean Rojas: 27-00
11. Jeff Kriet: 26-14
12: Charlie Hartley: 26-12

Although the distance between Hartley and Kennedy appears massive (10 pounds), it's really not, because weights tend to be all over the board at Amistad. Remember that last year's winner, Ish Monroe, was 15th after day 1, and trailed then-leader Ken Cook by 6 pounds.

Conditions today were warm – mid-50s at launch and a daytime high around 80 degrees. The morning brought overcast skies, which gave way to sun in the afternoon. But wind was a major factor. It blew a steady 20 mph, and forced some anglers off water, and kept others fighting for boat control all day.

That's just a sub-plot though. The bigger picture looks like this: Although Amistad's a big-fish factory, winning here is more about repeating. Which is why Kennedy's bag looks a lot stronger than Campbell's right now.

Kennedy didn't need a huge fish to anchor his limit, and he's catching them all over the lake.

Odds are against catching two 12-pounders, or even two 9s, in the 4 days of competition, so a group of 5s, 6s and 7s is more the goal. And if the event here last year is any guide, things should even out tomorrow and anyone who can average 26 pounds a day should remain in play.

Another major sub-plot is the spawn. The fish are literally parked on the gate of bedding, and could come up any day. If that happens, it could shake things up considerably. Scroggins is waiting. Rojas is already sight-fishing. Scary.

Another significant subplot is the swimbait. Fred Roumbanis used it to finish 2nd here last year, and Campbell's throwing it. Others are too. With the fish staging in predictable locations, and willing to eat, the swimbait bite's on.

The big question is whether anybody's put the time in with the bait to fully understand it. Meaning, how to adjust with a swimbait when the fish change, and how to mentally overcome the inevitable lost giant that's bound to miss the hook.

A clearer picture should emerge tomorrow when each angler has two sacks for comparison.

Kennedy: 'Best Day Ever'

Kennedy continues to amaze. After his first season fishing BASS, when he nearly won Angler of the Year (AOY), he opens a new year with a monster 36-10 toad sack.

His best fish weighed 8-02, but his bag also included a 7-15 and a 7-08. His smallest was a 6-pounder.

"It was the best day I've ever had on the water by far," he said. I had 30 pounds by 8:00, which freed me up to go fish for big ones all day. I caught my biggest one at 1:45, and culled out a 5 1/2-pounder with it. Then I quit and tried to take my partner around to catch one."

He's especially stoked because he caught them all over the lake, which means he's not tied to one single area or pattern. And he has several different patterns. Which one he selects is based on the weather.

This morning, he worked his cloud pattern. In the afternoon, he worked his sun pattern.

"This morning was really cloudy and dark, and that's what made it so easy. I expected to catch 20 to 25 pounds every day, but not that kind of bag.

"When the sun's out it's a totally different pattern," he added. "Today when they turned over, I was ready for it."

Rookie Scott Campbell's throwing a swimbait, and he watched this 12 1/2-pounder swim out from a tree to eat it.

2nd: Campbell Blown Away

Campbell qualified for the Elite Series through a 4th-place finish in the Bassmaster Northern Tour, and wanted to start the year with a decent tournament.

Nobody was more surprised than he was when he socked 36 pounds in his first-ever tour-level event. It all started with a 6-pounder on his first cast.

"Man, it's surreal," he said. "At 9:00 I had about 20 pounds, which is what I expected of the day. Then to catch a 9, and a 12 1/2 – you couldn't ask for anything more.

"It's just one of those deals. You go into a tournament and you know the fish are there of that size, but you don't expect to catch them. In Missouri, they plain old don't get that big."

He's throwing a swimbait, and he saw his 12 1/2 hit. But it was a tense moment.

"The water's so clear you can see everything. It came out of a tree and went 20 feet for it. I had to wait the whole time. I couldn't set the hook right away. It was awesome. It was something special."

On whether he thinks he can repeat tomorrow, he said: "I don't know about 36 pounds. I figure I can probably catch 20. I've got one spot that's real strong, plus a pattern I can run anywhere on the lake. With a swimbait, you don't get that many bites, but the ones you get are studs."

The thought of losing fish on the swimbait, which is common, has him a little spooked, but he took precautions. He super-glued all his rigging, so the treble won't push up into the plastic.

About being 2nd after his first day of tour-level competition, he said: "It'll sink in sometime this evening. Needless to say I won't get much sleep. You come in, and you expect to be consistent, but your whole goal is not to bomb in your first tournament.

"Then to go out and whack them – you prove to yourself you can catch them. These guys are the best in the world. I know it's only 1 day, but it doesn't hurt anything."

4th: Scroggins = Choices

Red-hot Scroggins has a chance to win two BASS events in a row. Kevin VanDam was the last to do that, when he won three in a row in 2005-06. And before him, Takahiro Omori won back-to-back in 2004-05. In each of those cases it was at the tour level.

Scroggins' case is a little different, since he won last week's Kissimmee Bassmaster Southern Open – a minor-league event. But the chance for back-to-back wins is remarkable nonetheless.

"It went really well today," he said. "I had a good day out there. I actually caught all my fish before 8:00, and used the rest of the day as a practice day."

He didn't sight-fish today – the wind was blowing too hard on his bed-fish, which were a little deeper than normal.

But he's glad he has two patterns – his bed-fish, and the fish he caught today – because he's prepared if the first wave hits the bank.

"I tried to figure out two or three different ways to catch them in practice," he noted. "Hopefully, those will stay together. On this lake, everybody catches 4s and 5s, but the difference is two or three 8- or 9-pound fish.

"I lost a big one today – I could be leading this event – but hopefully I'll catch them tomorrow."

"I think I'll be okay if (the spawn) happens," he added. "I'm keeping an open mind. I'm not scared to put my rod down and go looking."

6th: Cook Left 'Em

Cook mainly wants to avoid what happened here last year, when he led day 1, but fell to 16th after day 2. He thinks the conditions this year should help him avoid that, because his fish are "coming" right now, as opposed to "going" like last year.

Kevin Short finished up last season with three Top 6s in a row – can he make it four?

He didn't catch any monsters today – some 5s and 6s and one pushing 7. And he left biting fish today, which is typically a good sign.

"These fish moved up to a spot near where I caught them last year," he said. "A bunch of the bigger ones were in there, and I'm hoping they're still there tomorrow. They change every day, and they'll probably continue to change, but I'm hopeful that I'm fishing where they're coming to.

"I didn't have a great practice, and I didn't really know what I could catch today," he added. "You never really know, but I have four or five areas where I caught a big fish or two in practice. I plan to sort of maximize those areas."

His best area today wasn't a practice spot – it was a place he fished last year. He decided to stop in on his way down the lake, and slammed three good ones on back-to-back-to-back casts. He left that area at 2:00 to head toward weigh-in, and culled once somewhere near the launch.

He further noted: "Last year the spawn was further along than this year. This year they'll hopefully follow the same kind of pattern."

9th: Iaconelli On Schedule

Defending BASS AOY Mike Iaconelli began this season with one major goal – to finish in the Top 20 in each event for a chance to repeat as AOY.

He's right there now, with 27-09 and a 9th-place standing after day 1.

"I feel great," he said. "The big picture for me this year is I'm trying to finish in the Top 20 in every event. So to come out and have a strong first day feels good.

"It feels like I'm back on track again, hopefully to where I can have another run at AOY. I'm real happy with today's performance.

"I didn't have any big ones today – they were all solid 5- to 6-pound-class fish," he added. "But that's what makes me kind of excited. I know I'm around a lot of quality fish, with the potential to get a big bite. If I get that big bite, I'll be up around Kennedy. That's got me excited for sure."

He's not sight-fishing – he's catching staging fish – but he's ready for bedders it if starts.

"I'm fishing an area where the fish are transients – staging, then eventually heading to where they're going to spawn. Several times today I looked to see if they showed up yet. They didn't.

"But in one of my primary areas, I feel like by Saturday or Sunday we'll see some heavyweight spawning stringers."

10th: Rojas Stuck With Dink

Dean Rojas had the potential for a 30-pound sack today, but got stuck with a 2-pounder that he couldn't shake. Which is one of the pitfalls of sight-fishing.

He had his limit by 10:00, and upgraded throughout the day to an eventual 27-00, but never could dump the dink.

Terry Scroggins is fresh off a Bassmaster Open win, which means he has the opportunity to win back-to-back.

"I tried and tried – I just couldn't get rid of it," he said. "It'll probably could cost me. If I'd have had a 4- or 5-pounder instead of that, I'd be up there at 30 pounds.

"But anytime you can catch over 25 pounds, you're feeling pretty good. I'm really happy to have caught what I caught today."

He's one of the best sight-fishermen in the field, and that's what he's doing. He's not sure if the tournament will be won sight-fishing – a lot depends on what happens the next 3 days – but he does think there'll be a mix of techniques inside the Top 12, with about half of the Top 12 sight-fishing.

"I'm fishing shallow. I'm throwing a Northland Slurpies tube. It has a fish-scale pattern and it's working really well in the clear water on bed-fish.

"I do think the first (spawning) wave is on the way," he added. "There are tons of beds out there, and a lot of empty ones. One I found on Monday had a fish on it yesterday. These fish want to bed."

11th: Kriet Happy, Confused

Jeff Kriet's 26-11 is a strong day-1 bag, but it could have been stronger if he'd gotten a big bite. His co-angler got it instead when he stuck a 10-pounder.

"That was totally my fault," Kriet said of the 10. "I knew there were some big ones in there, and I threw a jerkbait through it six or seven times. Just before I picked up the right bait to throw in, my co-angler threw in and snatched a 10-pouner.

"He didn't do anything wrong. The way the wind was blowing, that's the way I had to fish – go up and throw back – so it was a perfect angle for him.

"I'm not going to gripe, I had a good day," he added. "Anytime you catch that kind of sack you're happy. But I really thought I could catch a 10-pounder today."

He noted that he didn't see fish locked on the beds, but he feels they're wanting to move up. And based on his experience last year, he probably won't fish the same spots tomorrow.

"Last year, I caught about 25 pounds the first day, then went back and screwed up. So I may go to other water tomorrow, but I'll have to sleep on that. I'm a little confused on what to do.

"I know you don't want to be fishing the same stuff over and over. I learned that last year."

Notable

> Day 1 stats – 108 anglers, 95 limits, 10 fours, 2 threes, 1 two, no zeroes.

> Paul Elias, who's currently 19th with 25-11, caught a 10-06 today. "I started the season off right – it was on my third cast that I caught that fish," he said.

> Last year's winner Monroe is 21st right now with 25-02. That's only 5 spots behind where he ended day 1 last year. "I chose to fish new water (this year)," he said.

> Gerald Swindle, in 30th with 21-12, won't change what he's doing, because he thinks the big bite is a numbers game. "You don't change anything – you just keep fishing, and one day you catch a 10. If you specifically fish for big ones, you won't catch any. The first day's just something to put on paper. Maybe tomorrow's my day."

> Rookie Matt Sphar (41st with 19-15) got more than a few questions about his uniform, which reads Alphabet Killer. "I'm advertising a movie this year," he said. "It's coming out in the fall. The producer, Greg Polisseni, is my sponsor. The movie was filmed right in Rochester (N.Y.), which is where I'm from."

> Casey Ashley is currently 2nd-last (107th), in part because of a late penalty due to mechanical problem. Right before the problem, he lost a 7-pounder with 15 minutes left to fish.
