You can catch a big bag at Texas' Lake Amistad, but you'd sure as heck better back it up. Otherwise, the hungry pack will attack your legs then move on past with the power of the average.

Evidence? After 36-pound starts, both Steve Kennedy and Scott Campbell today mustered a mere 16 pounds each after their swimbait bite died. They remained in 1st and 2nd respectively, but their 2-day average dropped to 26 1/2 pounds. And their 3-pound advantage evaporated.

Gary Klein weighed 26-09 and 25-14 for a 26 1/2-pound average, and moved up from 13th into a tie for 2nd.

Kevin Short, who began the day in 3rd with 33-06, blanked today and fell all the way to 58th. He won't be fishing tomorrow. Terry Scroggins, who was 4th yesterday, caught 15-14 and fell to 15th. And Ken Cook dropped from 6th to 31st.

Mike Iaconelli's working the average. No big sack yet for Ike, but 27-09 and 24-08 puts him 3rd with a 26-pound average. He ended yesterday in 9th.

The world's most dangerous angler, Kevin VanDam, is also rock-steady. His 26-08 yesterday and 24-08 today puts him 4th with a 25 1/2-pound average.

Edwin Evers was a little more up/down, but he's still right there. With 29-11 yesterday and 20-14 today, he retained his 5th-place position with a 25 1/2-pound average.

But the "average factor" might fly right out the window tomorrow, because it's at least likely, even probable, that the first major spawning wave will crash the bank tonight. That'll blow the roof off the current set of weights (which were down significantly today compared to yesterday).

If that happens, it'll be like playing a hand of poker with 78 cards – the extra 40 of which are jokers.

Here's a brief look at the current Top 12. Angler names are followed by total weight, then distance from leader in red.

1. Steve Kennedy: 53-00
2. Gary Klein: 52-07 (0-09)
2. Scott Campbell: 52-07 (0-09)
4. Mike Iaconelli: 52-01 (0-15)
5. Kevin VanDam: 51-00 (2-00)
6. Edwin Evers: 50-09 (2-07)
7. Derek Remitz: 49-10 (3-06)
8. Dean Rojas: 48-12 (4-04)
9. Cliff Pace: 48-09 (4-07)
10. Jeff Kriet: 48-02 (4-14)
11. Davy Hite: 48-00 (5-00)
12. Grant Goldbeck: 46-14 (6-02)

In addition to those mentioned above, other significant upward movements today were: Derek Remitz (37th to 7th), John Murray (44th to 12th), Mark Tyler (46th to 14th), Stephen Browning (53rd to 21st), Fred Roumbanis (98th to 25th), and Tommy Biffle (70th to 27th).

Other notable down movements were: Alton Jones (7th to 19th), Paul Elias (19th to 57th), Takahiro Omori (15th to 63rd), Kenyon Hill (41st to 79th), and reigning Bassmaster Classic champion Boyd Duckett (57th to 93rd).

No bite is truly "safe" right now, but those who were able to duplicate their weights both days do shine a little brighter. Especially since last year's event was won by Ish Monroe on a 4-day climb. And Fred Roumbanis last year squeaked into the cut and finished 2nd to Monroe after losing the winning fish.

Whether any of the day-1 heavyweights can recover tomorrow is anyone's guess, but if they do, it'll probably be on a different pattern than what they started with.

The fish weren't very cooperative today – they were suspended on cover and in the final period of staging. Some fish were on a reaction bite – VanDam notably was moving fast – but a number of mid-20 bags also came from a slow, methodical approach.

Again, though, all that will probably change tomorrow.

And if the fish do crash the bank, the weather looks good for sight-fishing conditions, to the point where a 40-pound bag is expected at least tomorrow, but most probably by Sunday.

Which makes tomorrow's Top 12 cut the primary goal. If you can make the cut, you can win, no matter the deficit. It's just that simple.

Kennedy Took a Chance

"They didn't bite today – that's pretty much the bottom line," Kennedy said. "It was on yesterday, and I took advantage of it. I really expected new fish to keep coming up. I caught everything I could yesterday, but they didn't replenish."

He threw the swimbait until 11:00 today and caught two fish, then went to the area where he started day 1 and flipped. He caught three in 20 minutes, one of which was a 5-pounder, to finish his limit.

"Then I picked up the swimbait for the rest of the day. I got one 3-pounder that culled, but I think I should have stayed flipping. I certainly believe I could have done better than I did, but you have to take that chance. I'm trying to win."

His average right now is 26 1/2 pounds, which is slightly more than the 26-average it took to win last year. So he thinks he's in good shape.

Of those anglers behind him, he's most worried about VanDam. "He's been so consistent," he said. "But I think whoever wins has to bust a big bag in the next day or two.

"I had one fish on the bed I wanted to go to today, but a local boat was sitting on it," he added. "There was an 8-year-old kid in the boat, and I wouldn't ask them to move.

"I haven't found a female on a bed other than that fish, but I'll look again. The majority aren't here yet."

2nd: Campbell Disappointed

In yesterday's coverage, BassFan noted that the swimbait bite looked shaky, since those near at the top (Kennedy and Campbell) didn't have much experience with the technique. Campbell, like Kennedy, couldn't readjust with the bait and it cost him.

"It was obvious what my fish had done – they kept moving up – but I just couldn't figure out how to catch them," Campbell said. "I was out in 35 feet of water in practice, and they moved up to 18 or 19 feet yesterday. I whacked them there. But they went on past me today into 4 or 5 feet of water.

"I could see them hanging on trees – 8s and 9s, just enormous fish – but I couldn't catch them. There was no wind and that killed the swimbait bite. I threw everything I could think of.

Despite his climb to 2nd, Gary Klein isn't happy with his fishing – he's lost too many.

"They're looking to bed down, but the water's still 59 degrees on the main lake. I think tomorrow it'll blow wide open."

He said he's disappointed with his weight today, and has already committed to bed-fishing tomorrow.

"I'll just go to the large creeks with flats in the backs of them and go fast, go hard, and try to find five good fish."

> Yesterday he caught a 6 1/2-pounder on his very first cast. He did the same thing today – caught the same size fish on his first cast from the same spot.

2nd: Klein Not Happy

Klein's tight-lipped about what he's on, which he always is, but remember that he made a strong play here last year on a deep-water bite when he finished 8th. And he made things interesting today with a big climb to 2nd. According to him though, it could have been a whole lot different.

"I'm not very happy with today or yesterday," he said. "Yeah, it worked out fine, but I haven't fished very good.

"I had greater expectations, but I lost fish. I should be well out in the lead."

Mentally, the lost fish haven't eaten at him. "That's just fishing," he said. "Everybody's going to lose them down here.

"I'm just picking them apart – one here, one there."

On whether he needs a big bag to win, or two more 26s, he said: "I was in 13th, and right at 26 pounds again, and I moved up 10 places or so. I think if I could catch 25 to 27 pounds the next 2 days, yeah, I'd have a shot at winning.

"But I still think we're going to see a big bag. I know I have a 30-pound-plus bag in me. It just hasn't happened for me yet."

5th: VanDam Working Hard

VanDam often makes it look easy. He's currently ranked No. 1 in the BassFan World Rankings presented by Tru-Tungsten, and is coming off a 3rd at the recent Bassmaster Classic.

"This lake really fits my style," he said. "I grew up in Michigan fishing real clear water, and this reminds me a lot of the smallmouth fishing at home. I really like to target big flats up there, and here you have a lot of room to do that.

"I can run around, and fish my style."

That "style" includes a reaction bait. But the spots where it's working are few.

"You can fish a lot of dead water, but when you get on them, it's unbelievable.

"It's hard to be consistent here," he added. "You see people bringing in 25-pound bags, and it looks like it's real easy. But it's a lot of hard work. It was a much different day today. I'd like to have a good day tomorrow and be in the hunt going into the final day."

9th: Pace 'Caught What Bit'

After a year stint with the Bassmaster Tour in 2005, then a year with the FLW Series, Cliff Pace is back to the BASS tour level. And so far, his start it strong.

He did lose a spot today when he fell from 8th to 9th, but with a 24-pound average (28-03, 20-06), the Mississippi pro's right in the mix.

"I never had a chance at the couple of key bites that can get you from 20 to 25 pounds," he said. "I caught what bit, and tomorrow I'll just go fishing and see what happens.

"It could all change in the blink of an eye. Yesterday, I caught three of my five in a 15-minute period."

He thinks he needs 24 to 25 pounds tomorrow to make the Top 12 cut.

"As long as you're in this thing – if you're fishing the last day – you have a chance to win. I don't care if you're 10 pounds behind. A 50-pound bag is possible on this lake.

"I think it's going to come down to a 1-day shootout. Just look at Fred Roumbanis last year. He made the cut in 9th, and had he caught his last fish, he would have won.

"I just hope I get the bites to be here the last day, and that I get my hands on them."

12th: Murray Out Deep

Count on western pro John Murray to be out deep when that bite's happening. He had an okay day out there yesterday when he caught 19-04, but he turned things up today with 27-10.

His bag included one 8-pounder and four 5s, and it bumped him from 44th to 12th.

"Yesterday, when I caught my biggest fish, I had about 15 or 20 chase it in to the boat," he said. "Then I left. It was the early morning, and I thought I'd find better stuff. I moved around and fished fast.

"Today I fished slow and deep and caught them."

He noted he's on a school of bigger fish, and that's key, because it's the type of school that's hard to find. "The big ones aren't just everywhere. They're deep in packs and just roaming around.

"It was an unbelievably fun day," he added. "I don't know if I can win it, but I think anybody in the Top 20 or 30 has a shot."

He noted that he's mostly Carolina-rigging Yamamoto Senkos and Ikas, but he did catch one on a swimbait with a new Powell swimbait rod he's been testing.

Also, Amistad reminds him a lot of his home lake near Phoenix, Ariz. "The place I'm fishing reminds me of Humbug Creek in Pleasant Lake," he said. "It looks just like it."

59th: Short Blanked

Call it what you will, but it's certainly a disaster. Short sat in 3rd when the day started, but weighed a big fat zero today and fell out of the cut.

"I'm drowning my sorrow in a bottle of $4 tequila – what does that tell you," he said. "I ran into them yesterday, and I ran out of them today. That's the way I describe it.

"I was just around some really active fish yesterday. Of course, I wasn't out there fishing for a limit. I was fishing for another 25- or 30-pound sack.

"I just never figured out what they wanted. Every once in a while, I could see one down there – a 3- or 4-pounder swimming – but I never could figure out what to do to make them bite. It was a frustrating day."

He had what he thought was a rock-solid pattern yesterday –"little flat pockets off the main lake with some hydrilla growing in the back" – and could pretty much call his shots.

It all disintegrated today though.

"It was like that old cartoon: 'Which way did they go?'" he added. "This part of the year has frustrated me for years and years. If I can get to where I figure it out, it's going to be ugly."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 108 anglers, 95 limits (same as yesterday), 5 fours, 2 threes, 3 twos, 1 one, 1 zero (1 more than yesterday).

> Four of the current Top 12 finished in the Top 12 here last year (Kennedy, Klein, VanDam, and Evers).

> Sight-fishing specialist Dean Rojas, in 8th, noted: "It's getting nice. The water's getting warmer, and the fish are moving. I saw some big ones this afternoon."

> Charley Hartley, who fell from 12th to 17th, said: "My fish are leaving. I'm fishing deep and they're going away."

> Alton Jones, who fell from 7th to 19th, said: "Things changed a lot today and I went into panic mode at about 10:00. Then I caught a 6-pounder, and that slowed me down and keyed me in to what I need to do. And I think (that fish) gave me something going into tomorrow – things are changing that fast."
