The Bassmaster Opens tend to visit the same types of venues year in and out, so it was somewhat of a surprise to see the Upper Chesapeake Bay on this year's Northern division schedule. The last time BASS visited the venue was almost 20 years ago for the Bassmaster Classic.

The major estuary and connected rivers are tidal influenced and when the schedule first appeared, most figured the bite to be decidedly pre-spawn. But a cold spring, and a bout of nasty weather in the days leading up to the event, kept the fish locked into their winter pattern.

New Jersey pro Dave Mansue gambled that he could win on a winter pattern and made the long trek up the Susquehanna to target wintering largemouths.

He opened with 19 1/2 pounds, followed up with 17, and despite

a three-fish day 3 edged Canadian pro Curtis Richardson by 6 pounds. No one else in the Top 10 weighed more than 11 fish over the 3 days.

It was Mansue's first win at this level, and it earned him nearly $50,000 in prizes and merchandise.

Here's an in-depth look at his winning winter pattern.

Practice

Mansue also fishes the PAA Series, and en route to the Neely Henry PAA a few weeks ago, he stopped by the Chesapeake to check it out.

He's well-versed in the fishery, as are most Mid-Atlantic tournament anglers. Most of his Chesapeake experience came via the Federation Nation and various buddy tournaments. In general, he's strong on tidal fisheries. He lives near the Delaware, and fishes the Hudson quite a bit too.

During his pre-practice visit to the Chesapeake, he noted water temperatures of 45 and 46 degrees. He couldn't find much grass, and observed that the fish were still very much in their winter patterns. He also fished a buddy tournament there and finished 2nd. His hope was that such a winter pattern would hold up for the Northern Open.

He finished 26th at the PAA Series (after starting the final day in 3rd), then drove back to the Chesapeake for his official practice.

"When people ask me about the Upper Chesapeake, I tell them my biggest fear is that it'll get cold and rainy – that shuts the fishery down," he noted. "And that's exactly what happened. Leading up to and during the official practice, the weather was horrible. It was ice cold with a lot of rain. The day before the tournament it was 40 degrees and raining sideways – miserable."

He initially tried to fish the conditions that he'd encountered during his pre-practice, but struck out. He didn't have a single 15-inch keeper bite the first 2 practice days.

He rooms with fellow New Jersey pro Pete Gluszek, and the two talked about exploring deep structure up the Susquehanna for the final practice day.

Mansue rode up there the next day, got three bites, set the hook on one and it was a 5-pound largemouth.

He said he spent the rest of the day marking deep, rocky structure with his Humminbird Side Imaging unit and detailed several areas to fish.

His plan was to try those areas for a few hours the morning of day 1.

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 19-09
> Day 2: 5, 17-00
> Day 3: 3, 10-13
> Total = 13 47-06

Mansue started day 1 on his deep rocks up the Susquehanna and by 9:00 had 14 pounds for three fish.

"That convinced me I was doing the right thing," he said. "I knew I wouldn't get a lot of bites, but I knew they'd all be quality bites. In fact, on day 1, I only got five bites. I was fortunate to get them all in the boat. I came in with 19-09 and I was feeling pretty good about it."

He was, however, "surprised" that others were 3 pounds ahead of him. He was especially surprised that Richardson weighed 22 pounds of smallmouths, since brown fish haven't been a winning factor at the fishery for a while, he said.

He went back to the same rocky areas on day 2 and kept rotating through them. He said he got "about 10 bites" that day doing the same thing, and a couple were shorts. He also lost a fish in the 5- to 6-pound class.

He noted he had 11 pounds by 8:30, and finished his limit at about 1:30. Again he was surprised at weigh-in, but this time it was because everyone else struggled.

"To find out I was leading was pretty special," he said.

He and Gluszek talked again that night, largely because his PAA finish was still fresh in his mind. He decided to fish new water the final day of the PAA and fell from 3rd to 26th. He didn't want to implode on the final day at the Chesapeake, so he convinced himself – with reassurance from Gluszek – to stick with what he had.

Mansue said current was key to his bite because it positioned the fish in predictable places.

But there was a nagging question in the back of his head that night, and it concerned the current.

"I knew if I could get enough current running through the river I'd be okay," Mansue said. "They were dumping water from the dam upriver because of all the heavy rains. That current was crucial for what I was doing because it positioned the fish. By that time, I knew exactly where to present the bait – I knew the fish would be in this one position on these particular rocks – but it was all dependent on the current."

The morning of the final day, the current was dead and Mansue had to scramble.

"I tried a couple of different things that didn't work out," he said. "But I noticed the water was running again around 11:30 or so. I went through my areas and didn't get a bite, but then went to an area I was familiar with from previous tournaments. It was a rock jetty and the water was moving past it rather quickly. From 12:30 to 1:30, I caught the three fish I weighed in for 10-13."

Winning Pattern Notes

Although a major portion of the Chesapeake is brackish water, Mansue said the portion of the Susquehanna he fished was freshwater. It did have some tidal movement. "But there are places not far from where I was fishing where you can catch a striper, a bluefish and a largemouth on three casts," he added.

The water temperature during competition ranged from 47 to 51 degrees.

His rocks were deep during high tide, but he could generally see the tops during low tide. He wasn't fishing the piles, though. He said he fished the deep drops around them and typically caught his fish in 6 to 14 feet.

He threw a 3/4-ounce jig and dragged it along the bottom. About his presentation, he said: "With the current moving so strongly around the rocks, if you used anything less than a 3/4-ounce, you just didn't get down to where the fish were. You had to be crawling the jig across those rocks. They were relating directly to bottom. I found if I wasn't losing jigs, I wasn't getting bit.

"And one thing I learned during the tournament was several of my good fish actually came from in front of the rocks. Typically you think a fish is behind, where there's little current – waiting for things to come to them. But on several occasions I was able to catch some of my better fish on the face of the rock. If a fish was on the face it would hammer that jig."

Winning Gear Notes

> Jig gear: 7' medium-action Shimano Crucial rod, Shimano Chronarch casting reel, 15-pound Berkley Trilene 100% fluorocarbon, assorted 3/4-ounce football jigs (brown/purple-flake), Zoom Ultra Vibe Speed Craw (green-pumpkin).

> He lost so many jigs he ran out of his own supply and bummed some from various others.

> He said his electronics were a huge factor. Humminbird Side Imaging technology allowed him to quickly map and explore rockpiles that final day of practice. "And the Navionics chip allowed me to run freely around the upper bay and river. A lot of guys were getting stuck in places they shouldn't be running. That Navionics chip makes a big difference. It's the premium chip for the East Coast. It really allows you to minimize the time it takes to look for deeper structure."

The Bottom Line

  • Main factor in his success – "I'd say there were several. One was patience. I knew I wasn't going to get a lot of bites, but I had confidence the bites would be quality. The second key was the current. Without that current, they wouldn't come up on the rocks to feed. The third key was the 3/4-ounce jig. You had to present it right in their face, right on the bottom. If you were a little above, you wouldn't get bit."

  • Performance edge – "I'd have to say it was the Skeeter/Yamaha package. It got me to where I needed to be and back without any problems. And the ease with which it maneuvers around and through the rocks in incredible. I run a 20i with a 225 HPDI Series 2. It's a great fishing platform."
