Greg Hackney was the 13th-place finisher at the St. Johns River Bassmaster Elite Series – one spot out of the cut for the final day. He caught a strong 18-11 on day 3, but missed the No. 12 spot by 6 ounces.
His downfall in that regard came on day 1, when he hooked and lost a bed-fish that was in excess of 8 pounds. The 13-07 bag he ended up weighing that day left him in 30th place.
"I made a bad choice of baits to throw at her first – I should've used something lighter that would've let her get more of the hook instead of just the bait," he said. "If I'd been throwing the right bait I would've caught her on the second cast. She would've bitten anything.
"It wasn't in my primary area – it was just a single fish I'd gone to. I stayed there fishing for her until 12:00 and she finally left and I couldn't get her to come back. When I finally got to my primary area, another competitor had beaten it up and caught a big bag out of there."
