Day 2 at the Smith Lake FLW Tour started with a different kind of cloud cover, as the morning brought fog instead of rainstorms. It didn’t cause any delay in takeoff, though, and burned off fairly quickly, revealing bright sunshine for the rest of the day.

The dramatic change in weather didn’t slow down the bite, as 164 of 182 pros brought in limits.

While full sacks were plentiful, the big bite was still elusive. David Williams, however, continued to vacuum up quality bass, sacking 15-05 to give him 34 pounds even. He expanded his lead to 3-12 after two days.

He lost the biggest fish he’s hooked all week or his lead would be even greater.

Cody Meyer also caught less weight today, but moved up one spot to 2nd with 30-04. Matt Arey is 2 ounces back in 3rd with a 29-07 two-day aggregate, improving two spots over day 1.

The heaviest bag of day 2 belonged to Greg Bohannan, who weighed 17-07, which lifted him to 4th place – a huge jump from 54th on Day 1. Jordan Osborne improved 23 places to claim 5th with 29 pounds even.

Here's a look at the top 10 entering the third day of competition, with deficit margin from Williams indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. David Williams: 34-00
2. Cody Meyer: 30-04 (3-12)
3. Matt Arey: 30-02 (3-14)
4. Greg Bohannan: 29-07 (4-09)
5. Jordan Osborne: 29-00 (5-00)
6. Matt Becker: 28-15 (5-01)
7. Jim Moynagh: 28-13 (5-03)
8. Joseph Webster: 28-11 (5-05)
9. Todd Auten: 28-04 (5-12)
10. John Cox: 28-00 (6-00)

Newcomers to the Top 10 included Bohannan, Osborne, Matt Becker, Todd Auten, and John Cox. Departing were Blake Smith, Clent Davis, James Niggemeyer, Jeff Dobson, and Jason Reyes. All five of the latter group still made the top-30 cut and will fish on Saturday.

The water level, which had been 4 feet above full pool, fell about half a foot today, and that will probably continue over the weekend with no rain in the forecast. Anglers encountered significant debris floating in some of the creeks.

Williams said he got 40 or 50 bites throughout the day.

The 30th-place cut spot was held by JT Kenney, with a two-day weight of 24-04. David Larson also had 24-04, but he lost the single-day highest weight tiebreaker (13-00 to 12-04).

The field will be reduced to the top 10 after day 3 and the winner will be determined Sunday by highest 4-day total.

Williams Weighed Less but Caught More

> Day 2: 5, 15-05 (10, 34-00)

Williams knew it would be tough to repeat his big weight from day 1, and neither he nor anyone else matched it. Though his bag weighed over 3 pounds less, his lead increased (from 2-09 to 3-12).

“I fished the same deal as yesterday, but added one different area today,” he said. “I did have one big one on, probably the biggest this week, and it just came up and jumped one time and came off. That one would have put me close to yesterday’s weight.

“I have three creeks I stayed in all day and covered pretty thoroughly. I caught a few in all of them. There are a lot in there.”

He thinks the dropping water may have helped some, but he isn’t sure.

“I just know with the sun out more bait showed up, and the bass followed them in,” he noted. “I caught more spots today, but I’m catching both (species) on pretty much the same baits in the same areas.”

His anchor fish was a 4-09 spotted bass. He generated maybe 40 to 50 bites on the day, a good many more than day 1. His bag consisted of three largemouths and two spots, and he had most of his weight by 10 o'clock.

All five of Cody Meyer's weigh-in fish were approximately the same size.

He expects more of the same tomorrow, but boat traffic could become an issue.

“There will be less tournament boats, but I saw a lot of people dumping in big cruisers today,” he noted. “But if it goes like today, they won’t even get up before I have what I need to catch.”

2nd: Meyer Struggled With Random Bite

> Day 2: 5, 14-07 (10, 30-04)

Despite his weight dropping off almost 1 1/2 pounds from day 1, Meyer improved his placement in the top 5 after Day 2.

“I’m feeling good about it, but the bite is so random,” he said. “It’s just one here and one there, but I’m having fun.

“It was more of a struggle today, probably due to (tournament) boat pressure. I don’t think the sun being out caused it, since that should make it better and get the herring to come up. I saw some schooling fish one time today, for the first time this week. They came up near the boat and I caught one of my better ones then.

“I ran a bunch of new stuff and covered a lot of water, looking for something new and exciting to fish,” he added. “I think I’ll do the same thing tomorrow and see if I can hit a few spots I haven’t been able to yet.”

He caught 15 keepers and his best five were all around 3 pounds.

3rd: Arey in Scramble Mode

> Day 2: 5, 14-09 (10, 30-02)

Arey came in a pound lighter but climbed two places in the standings on day 2. As his practice and day-1 pattern started to fizzle, he had to invent Plan B.

“Before the water came up in practice, I had located a bunch of bedding fish,” he said. “I was using my Lunkerhunt Fetch swimbait to find them. I burned those (bedding largemouths) up early on day 1, but I threw the swimbait and got a few upgrades later in the day.

“Today I used the swimbait to locate a deep spotted bass that came up and showed itself,” he added. “Then I threw in and caught it on a wacky worm.” It was in the 4-pound class.

“What I thought would happen with the sun out didn’t materialize today. The largemouth aren’t coming up like I thought they might. I only got two bites looking for bedding largemouth. I transitioned to finesse and targeted spots most of today.

“I don’t have a clue for tomorrow. It’s changed every day, so I’m just fishing the conditions. You have to adapt on the fly.”

4th: Bohannan Climbed a Mountain

> Day 2: 5, 17-07 (10, 29-07)

With a massive 5-pound improvement over day 1, Bohannan rocketed up 50 places. What made the difference?

“I decided to fish for largemouths all day,” he said. “I’ve been doing some stuff to catch a limit quick of spots to loosen up, and then pick up the Lew’s flipping stick and look for upgrades. I weighed two good spots today (along with three largemouths), and I was real fortunate the spots were 3-pounders.”

He caught 15 keepers on the day, including a 5-pound largemouth. He hasn’t had any company in his areas.

“I’m kind of running a pattern and just covering new water every day. I only saw one other (tournament) boat today and two yesterday. Boat traffic on the weekend won’t likely be any problem either.

“Tomorrow I’ll run some new creeks, but in the same general area, and also cover some of the same water,” he noted. “This lake has been one of my worst ever, if you look at my history here, so I was determined to not let it get me this year.”

5th: Osborne Found a Hotspot

> Day 2: 5, 15-13 (10, 29-00)

Osborne improved his weight by more than 2 1/2 pounds from day 1.

“The bite didn’t really change, but I found something yesterday that I keyed in more today,” he said. “I found this area mid-day yesterday. It’s unreal, just fish after fish after fish. I caught around 25 keepers today.”

He caught mostly spotted bass, but noticed the largemouth bite seems to be picking up.

“I think the falling water might be bringing them out to me,” he observed. “I hope it keeps falling but not real fast, maybe a half a foot a day like today. A little wind seems to help, too.”

He jumped off a couple largemouths, but then downsized his offering to improve his hookup ratio. “They were biting funny to start with,” he noted. “I think some are spawning. They’re spawning and feeding in the same area. I’m fishing mid-depth and they’re in 2 to 10 feet.”

His best fish weighed 3.85 pounds, but they were all similarly sized.

“I feel good about tomorrow,” he added. “It should be pretty steady through the weekend. I really think the (daily weight) floor for what I’m catching there is 14 pounds.”

6th: Becker’s Move Paid Off

> Day 2: 5, 15-04 (10, 28-15)

Becker struggled throughout day 1 until 3 p.m. He was due in at 4 and he culled three times before he ran back. On day 2, he didn’t have to wait so long to start catching fish.

“I went back this morning to what I found at the end of the day yesterday and ran the same deal,” he said. “I had culled up to 14 pounds by 1 p.m., then I left my primary area and stumbled onto an even better spot and culled four times in the last hour.”

He caught 20 or more keepers for the day, with a 3-pound average on his best five.

“I think I’ll start there tomorrow,” he added. “They came up schooling and there were some big ones. Most of them aren’t breaking on top but they’re following bait and feeding. They’re suspended 10 to 20 feet deep over 60 to 100 feet. I’m just blind-casting a Keitech swimbait.

“I’m hoping tomorrow will be even better, but you never know with the spots,” he noted. “They could move or the bait could leave.”

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 182 anglers, 164 limits, 3 fours, 4 threes, 4 twos, 3 ones, 4 zeroes.

> Bryan Thrift (54th place) again extended his record string of consecutive limits in FLW Tour competition, notching day No. 55. Although he missed the top-30 cut, his streak will be intact with the Kentucky Lake event gets under way.

> Williams saw a bear come down for a drink this morning. “It was a small cub, about 50 pounds,” he said. “That was pretty cool.”

> Meyer caught a huge striper on day 2. “I should have painted it like a spot and brought it to weigh-in,” he quipped. He also caught a bass that had someone else’s treble hook hanging in its jaw, with a stretched-out split ring on the hook.
