Schmitt Slams 24-11 For Day-1 Lead At Big O

The way some competitors were talking after practice, it sounded as though Lake Okeechobee couldn’t fish any worse than what it had earlier this week. The conditions were miserable with high, cold and dirty water. The grass was severely depleted as a result of Hurricane Irma last fall and big fish were random and difficult to pattern.

Despite a stiff wind that prompted the National Weather Service to issue a lake wind advisory that was still in effect Thursday evening, the warming water seems to have prompted a wave of bass to move into areas where the water has remained somewhat cleaner.

That helped set the stage for nine pros to crack the 20-pound mark on day 1 of the FLW Tour season today, led by Maryland’s Bryan Schmitt, who surprised himself with a 24-11 limit, the biggest of his Tour career, which started in 2014. There’s an expectation that the bite could continue to improve with stable, albeit breezy, conditions expected for the days ahead.

Mark Rose isn’t far behind after bagging 24-00 as he seeks to win the season opener in back-to-back years. Texan Christopher Brasher hauled 22-00 to the scale and sits in 3rd while Britt Myers overcame a bout with the flu and kicked off his FLW Tour career with a 21-08 bag that has him in 4th.

Tyler Stewart, competing in his first Tour event as a pro, caught 21-02 and occupies the 5th spot.

It was an emotional start to the day as a brief ceremony was held prior to blast-off to honor Nicolas Kayler, the Florida man who died while competing as a co-angler in the FLW Series tournament at Okeechobee earlier this month. The universal sign for man overboard – three long air-horn blasts followed by a single vertical flare – was performed prior to the field of 187 boats being turned loose out of Clewiston, not far from where Kayler’s body was recovered on Jan. 10.

Competitors said it was a somber mood around the ramp and with the windy conditions, tournament officials implored them to use the rim canal, which provides a mostly protected route around the lake’s perimeter, and not to run across open water.

According to a release issued by FLW after today's competition, Andy Young and William Campbell were involved in a boat collision some time in the afternoon. According to the release, the collision occurred when both anglers met at an intersection with Campbell's boat striking the port (left) side of Young's boat.

Young and his co-angler were ejected, but both were able to get back into the boat. Both boats were able to return to the launch ramp at Clewiston Boat Basin and the accident is under investigation by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Young said he is being treated for a back injury at a local hospital while Campbell was uninjured.

Young was credited with 10-00 today while Campbell was late to check in and did not weigh in. Campbell told BassFan he will not compete on Friday.

A few big names find themselves well off the pace, including reigning Angler of the Year Bryan Thrift, who will have his work cut out for him Friday if he’s to challenge for a spot inside the top-30 cut. He caught a limit for 8-11 today and sits in 142nd. Three-time AOY Andy Morgan struggled as well, catching three bass for 3-13, which had him in 176th.

Reigning Forrest Wood Cup winner Justin Atkins started his sophomore season on Tour with a 10-07 stringer that has him in 111th. Bradley Hallman, who won the 2016 Tour stop at Okeechobee, caught 10-06 and is two spots behind Atkins.

The field will be reduced to the top 30 after the scales close tomorrow, with the top 10 after Saturday advancing to Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

‘They Showed Up’ For Schmitt

> Day 1: 5, 24-11

Okeechobee was the site of Schmitt’s first FLW Tour event back in 2014. It didn’t go well as he managed 16-13 over two days and finished 165th. Two years later, he had 19-14 and wound up 67th.

Today was way better than both of those tournaments combined and much better than he anticipated. Schmitt didn’t expect to catch what he did today. He had a rough practice and joked that he thought 24-11 could’ve been the winning weight.

“It was unbelievable,” he said. “Something happened, man. They showed up.”

By “they,” Schmitt was referring to some females that infiltrated an area where he’d caught several male bass on Tuesday. He kept the area in the back of his mind for today, hoping the females would roll in there. He said he made a bait change, too, that seemed to result in more bites.

“I went back there first thing this morning and stayed all day,” he said. “Today blew me away.”

His stringer was anchored by twin 6-13s and he thinks with the coming full moon and the water continuing to warm up could trigger a consistent wave of new fish to move in toward spawning areas.

“They’re coming,” he said. “I think it was the bait change, too. It was like, ‘Wow, that really happened.’ You hear it every tournament we have in Florida – ‘They’re coming in,’ – but it might actually be happening. For once, the water temperature is not going the other way.”

He said some dirty water was starting to creep in on the area today so he hopes it’s still fishable in the morning.

“I’m just hoping my spot doesn’t get blown out,” he said. “The wind was pretty bad. It’s not even calm where I’m at. If it’s still fishable, I’ll beat the snot out of it. I expanded on it a little today and I think there are more fish there.”

2nd: Rose Slowed Down

> Day 1: 5, 24-00

Rose came into today figuring anything in the 13- or 14-pound range would be satisfactory. He also knew the potential for a much bigger bag existed simply because of where he’s fishing. He found that slowing down in certain areas today paid dividends and he’ll be cognizant of that moving forward.

“I was catching a lot of little fish in practice – a lot of males and was thinking 13 or 14 pounds would have me on track to have a decent tournament,” he said. “I sped through (places) in practice and I started on a high-percentage area and caught a big one there and moved around in there. Then I slowed down a little and methodically picked everything apart. That’s what I did the rest of the day. I got two more big bites and two more nice keepers.”

His bag was anchored by a 6-13 and a 6 1/2-pounder.

“It was nothing extraordinary,” he said. “I just slowed down and got three big bites – two of them doing the same thing and the other one slowing down with a worm. I caught some flipping and used different techniques around the same area.”

He’s hoping the area is fishable in the morning. If it’s not, he’ll resort to plan B spots.

“The area I was in today probably got blown out,” he said. “The wind started switching and muddying it up pretty bad. I’m hoping my backup areas are still protected and I’ll be able to scratch and claw something out of there. You have to have one good bite.”

Who knows, a few more big bites and he could be staring down a chance to capture his third win in the last two seasons.

“I’d love for it happen just like it did last year, but I also have a brain and know there are 185 other guys out here who don’t want to see a repeat of last year,” he said.

3rd: Brasher Caught Two Bruisers

> Day 1: 5, 22-00

The area Brasher did his damage in today didn’t avail itself until late on the final practice day. His only hope now is that it remains clean enough that he can be productive there tomorrow.

“I’m super happy after day 1,” he said. “It’s hard to say what’s going to happen. It didn’t get muddy where I was fishing today, but it could get in there tomorrow. I’ve been through it before here – if it gets muddy, you might as well leave.”

If needed, he has other options that he found earlier in practice, but he’d much rather rely on the area that produced 6-07 and 7-pound kickers for him today.

“I knew there were some big ones in there because I shook off three big ones and had a few other good bites,” he said. “Adjusting was a big factor because I knew I’d catch them doing other stuff.”

4th: Myers Hung In There

> Day 1: 5, 21-08

Myers was actually hoping today’s competition would be canceled. That way he could’ve stayed in bed and tried to shake the bug that’s been sapping his energy since late Sunday.

“My main objective this morning was to make it through the day,” he said.

Making his FLW Tour debut after 12 seasons on the Elite Series, Myers, who finished 77th in the Okeechobee Elite Series last year, is well aware of the potential to fall off the pace tomorrow. He’s hoping the area he and Matt Arey were in continues to replenish and they’re able to have it to themselves again.

“I have fished here so many times and every time I have a good tournament, I find an area and pick it apart,” he said. “I was hoping to get enough bites to not have a bad tournament. Occasionally, you have a good one and today I had a good day. I know tomorrow can be a 7-pound bag. That’s why I’m so happy to have what I had.”

Despite being under the weather, he was able to dial in a particular bait and how to trigger bites with it.

“It may change tomorrow, but it’s very rare that you have a cadence or a retrieve that’s triggering fish,” he said. “It’s a certain cast and approach to a certain structure, but they just bite it. I stumbled on it in practice and I went back to where I missed fish and got more bites.”

5th: Stewart Stoked After Strong Start

> Day 1: 5, 21-02

Stewart, 23, was thrilled to catch a big bag to kick off his FLW Tour career. It helped him get rid of the nerves he felt this morning.

“It’s awesome. I knew that I could compete with these guys and it’s really nice to get off to a good start,” he said. “Coming in as a rookie, everybody has question marks so to do that off the jump, it felt good to get that weight off my shoulders.”

It didn’t take him long to compile a sizable limit either.

“You practice for this type of thing to happen and it never goes this way,” he said. “I found a good area with the potential for a 20-pound bag and I had 20 in 30 minutes. It just happened.

“In practice, most of the fish were 3 to 3 1/2 pounds so I hoping to catch a 14- to 16-pound bag. Yesterday, some big females moved in. The first three I caught were fat females full of eggs. I had been catching mostly males.”

He poked around the big area, but didn’t double-back through any particular spots. He thinks he conserved enough water to get him through tomorrow.

“I was trying to catch as much as I could while I could because you don’t know if they’ll bite again tomorrow,” he said. “I did learn the big ones are in there and I need to do whatever it takes to stay in the top 30.”

8th: Morning Move Paid Off for Mosley

> Day 1: 5, 20-09

Brandon Mosley was among those who wasn’t too amped up about his practice, but after what he saw today, his outlook has improved.

“It’s been warm the last couple of days and that’s one of the only ingredients you need to get things going,” he said. “I hunkered down in an area I had liked in practice. I found the right water color, but it’s no secret. There were 30 or 40 boats around me.”

This is only his second trip to Florida and he found out quick this morning why anglers always stress the importance of getting away from dirty water when in the Sunshine State.

“I put my trolling motor down and knew it wouldn’t work,” he noted. “I had to start moving around and head toward cleaner water. That’s when I caught a good one. Things started rolling mid-day and I was fortunate to get a few of the right ones.”

He didn’t divulge any details of his pattern, but he believes he might be onto something unique. He also wouldn’t mind another breezy day Friday.

“I’m never one to put too much stock into a bait, but I’m doing something a little different from everybody else,” he added. “I personally hope the wind blows again tomorrow and it’s supposed to because I think the wind helps me a little bit.”
