The water is still dirty in many places and the wind continues to howl out of the east, but the water temperature is on the rise around Lake Okeechobee and that has the big females on the move. In places where anglers caught mostly males in practice, they’ve now been joined by their more desirable counterparts.

And that has some competitors anxious to see what the weekend has in store after the elimination of 157 boats following day 2 of competition today.

The top two spots on the leaderboard are unchanged from Thursday. Bryan Schmitt held onto the lead after sacking 23-08 to push his total to 48-03. Mark Rose is still 2nd, thanks to a 23-05 stringer that put his total at 47-05.

Chris Johnston, who finished 3rd at Okeechobee in his Tour debut in 2016, moved into the No. 3 slot today with a tournament-best 28-07 bag that nearly doubled his day-1 haul and gave him 43-01 at the halfway point. Tim Frederick is the top Floridian so far as he rode today’s 25-15 effort into 4th place, where he sits with 42-03.

Christopher Brasher fell out of the 20-pound bag club – there were seven of them today – but still managed 16-15 and is 5th with 38-15.

Here's a look at the top 10 after the second day of competition, with deficit margin from Schmitt indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Bryan Schmitt: 48-03
2. Mark Rose: 47-05 (0-14)
3. Chris Johnston: 43-01 (5-02)
4. Tim Frederick: 42-03 (6-00)
5. Chris Brasher: 38-15 (9-04)
6. Brandon Mosley: 36-15 (11-04)
7. Cory Johnston: 36-15 (11-04)
8. Brandon McMillan: 36-13 (11-06)
9. Tyler Stewart: 35-01 (13-02)
10. Brett Preuett: 34-13 (13-06)

The general consensus is if the wind would slack off in areas where the water is clean enough, it would allow anglers to sight-fish for the big females, but right now it appears a combination of moving, reaction-type baits and flipping, along with soft stick baits has been most effective.

Jeremy Lawyer made a 57-place move up to 14th behind a 21-02 stringer that gave him 33-09. He’s three ounces behind fellow Missourian Casey Scanlon, who made a 40-place improvement with a 20-07 bag. Scott Canterbury jumped 30 places into 16th with a 19-07 effort. Reigning Angler of the Year Bryan Thrift had a better day with 16-04, which helped him climb 77 spots to 65th, but he wound up 9 ounces shy of the money cut.

Jordan Osborne made the biggest move of the day, improving 121 places to finish 46th, thanks to a 20-04 sack that dwarfed his 6-12 (three fish) bag from Thursday.

Britt Myers fell 40 places and finished 43rd after boxing a 5-13 limit today. Bradley Dortch started the day in 10th place, but wound up 47th as he managed 7-06.

Alex Davis, who missed the 2017 Forrest Wood Cup by one point, made the top-30 cut today by 1 ounce, edging John Cox. Davis was the runner-up at Okeechobee in 2016. FLW expanded the day-2 cut for Tour events this season to the top 30, but the 21st- through 30th-place finishers will still collect the same $10,000 paycheck as those who finished 31st through 60th.

The field will be reduced to the top 10 after the scales close tomorrow, with the winner determined by highest cumulative weight on Sunday.

Schmitt Confident He’s Around Winning Fish

> Day 2: 5, 23-08 (10, 48-03)

Schmitt wasn’t banking on coming close to matching his day-1 total, but with the water clarity holding steady and more fish continuing to move in, he’s starting to get comfortable where he’s at.

“It’s exceeded expectations by far,” he said. “I was worried about the wind direction muddying it up and it did a little, but it was still doable. I was lucky to have a late flight today because I did a lot of my work between 12 and 2. Not having to weigh in until 5, I didn’t feel rushed.”

He caught a limit pretty quickly this morning for around 7 pounds, then culled with a big one around 11:30. He added four more quality fish between then and 2:30.

“It wasn’t the same cast,” he said. “It was one here and one there. I continued to mix it up.”

Schmitt has had a love-hate relationship with Okeechobee in the past. Typically, he says, the years he has a good practice turns into a lousy tournament. This week, he’s hoping a sub-par practice is the reason why he’s off to a great start in the tournament.

“Ths is the first time where I haven’t caught them in practice,” he said. “The key, I think, is finding those fish on the final afternoon of practice. This week, with the warming trend and the moon coming, that was key. This is the first time I haven’t felt good going into a tournament here and had it work out.”

He has supreme confidence that one of the contenders fishing in the area he’s at will wind up claiming the win on Sunday.

“It’s someone in that area’s tournament to win,” he said. “Whichever one of us does well the next couple days will take it. There is 30 pounds there, but someone could have 15 and another guy have 30 and it could flip-flop, but I’m still confident in it.”

He has no issue with fishing around other competitors, even if they’re neck-and-neck on the leaderboard.

“Coming from the Potomac, you’re never by yourself, so I’m okay with it,” he added.

Chris Johnston is looking to improve his 3rd-place finish at Okeechobee in 2016.

3rd: Johnston Overcame Slow Start

> Day 2: 5, 28-07 (10, 43-01)

Compared to two years ago, Johnston says the lake looks a lot different and it’s fishing much different, too. A passionate flipper with a big weight, Johnston noted it’s been difficult to find many target-rich areas to fish that way.

“I found some, but I can’t get bit doing that,” he said. “They’re not in open water, but they’re not under cover either. If you come to a single clump of reeds and throw something by it, they’ll get it. Or if you throw a Senko in there and let it sit, they’ll eat it.”

Johnston says he’s in the same general area as Rose and Schmitt, but there are more than enough fish to go around. Where he’d been catching males in practice he’s now catching females.

“If it cleared up some, I think we’d only be able to see some better fish,” he said.

At 10 a.m. today, he didn’t have a fish in his livewell. By day’s end, his bag was anchored by an 8-04 brute. He’s caught the bulk of his fish this week on moving baits.

4th: Frederick Feeling Good

> Day 2: 5, 25-15 (10, 42-03)

Frederick also is brimming with confidence after nearly hitting the 26-pound mark today. He’s a Florida native who’s well-versed in the effects of cold fronts this time of year and he’s confident the weights could remain consistent over the final two days.

“They’ve burned me, too,” he said. “It’s a double-edged sword. If I'm confident in an area I'll stay there and wait on them. I've dealt with fronts before here and it’s just a waiting game. We had to wait for the water temperature to get right.

“These fish wanted to spawn the whole time and that cold front set them back,” he added. “It’s been stable and warm lately and more are pulling in. Execution has been and will be key. I missed one between 7 and 8 today, but I was happy with 26. If I can do it again tomorrow, I like my chances to make the top 10.”

He remained in the same area from day 1 and now that the water has gotten to 63 degrees, he thinks the pre-spawn fish should start coming up in droves.

“It seemed like there was a window for big fish today between 12:30 and 2,” he said. “That’s when I caught my big ones.”

He’s been focused on getting his baits around specific targets and letting it soak on the bottom or be dragged along the bottom.

Tim Frederick's target-fishing game plan produced nearly 26 pounds today.

5th: Brasher Still Confident

> Day 2: 5, 16-15 (10, 38-15)

Brasher continues to have confidence in his main area despite his weight falling off by 5 pounds today. He said there was an uptick in boat traffic, but with 157 boats eliminated today, that shouldn’t be an issue tomorrow.

“There’s a 30-pound bag where I’m fishing,” he said. “I saw several good ones caught this afternoon. I had my weight by 9:30.”

He said he didn’t get as many bites today and it was harder to move around because of the increased popularity of his area. Still, he believes the fish to win are there – and more are coming.

“I caught my big one today in the same place I caught a big one yesterday,” he said. “I also saw a 9- or 10-pounder get caught, too. There are fresh ones funneling in. They’re in there and there are more coming. As long as it stays clean, I should be alright. I can’t see it getting messed up at this point.”

151st: Arey Got ‘Flustered’

> Day 2: 1, 1-14 (6, 15-12)

Matt Arey has won a couple FLW Tour events and competed in the last seven Forrest Wood Cups as a pro. Very little gets to him mentally.

Today was the exception. After catching 13-14 on day 1 and feeling like he was in an area that could produce a bigger stringer, he struggled to generate bites and limped in with one fish that weighed 1-14.

“At about 3 o’clock, I’ll be honest, I almost threw up,” he said. “I haven’t been that flustered in a tournament in a long time.”

His only explanation was that the persistent wind, which shifted direction slightly, may have pushed more stained water into the area and caused the fish to not bite.

“I didn’t think the water dirtied up that much,” he said. “I tried to force an issue that I shouldn’t have tried to force. I gambled and lost.”

It’s the second time in his career he’s started a season with a triple-digit finish at Okeechobee. In 2016, when the schedule had six tournaments, he overcame a 126th-place finish and wound up 13th in AOY points. He’s already looking ahead to the next event.

“One thing I love about fishing is whether you have a good or bad tournament, you made those decisions,” he said. “We don’t have teammates to pick us up. If it’s a bad one, you can fix it. I want the second tournament to start tomorrow. I’m ready to go, but I’ll have my work cut out for me.”

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 187 anglers, 152 limits (13 fewer than yesterday), 10 fours, 11 threes, 4 twos, 6 ones, 4 zeroes (3 more than yesterday).

> Brandon McMillan received five stitches in his chin at a local hospital this afternoon after being hit by his co-angler’s flipping weight. In an unrelated incident, Dylan Hays had the right lens of his sunglasses shatter when the weight he was flipping with struck him. While on stage, Hays explained the Costa glasses he was wearing have a film on the lens that prevented pieces of the lens from entering his eye.

> Neither Andy Young nor William Campbell competed today after both were involved in an on-the-water collision Thursday afternoon. Neither responded to text messages. Young was being treated Thursday evening for a back injury while it’s believed Campbell was uninjured. A spokesperson with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which is investigating the crash, did not respond to an email requesting an update.
