Dave Lefebre rebounded from a disastrous start to his Bassmaster Elite Series tenure with a pair of strong finishes. Now, in his fourth event on the circuit, he's in position to make a run at the fourth tour-level victory of his career.

The former FLW Tour standout from Pennsylvania boxed 21-03 on Friday for a 2-day total of 39-15 at Alabama's Wheeler Lake. He'll take a 4 1/2-pound advantage into the weekend, but there's a slew of accomplished veterans chasing him and nobody's quite sure what the severe thunderstorms that arrived during the weigh-in will do to the better-than-expected bite on day 3.

Two-time Angler of the Year (AOY) Gary Klein, who has just one Top-12 finish in his last 26 events, jumped from 15th to 2nd with 19-07 haul that gave him a 35-08 total. Randy Howell, the 2014 Bassmaster Classic champion, moved up 10 places to 3rd with 35-02 after boxing 18-11.

Takahiro Omori, another former Classic winner, weighed the event's biggest stringer thus far (23-03) and catapulted 68 places to 4th with with a 33-10 aggregate. Casey Ashley, the 2015 Classic champ, completed the Top 5 with 33-07 in the wake of a 13-11 sack.

Here's how the Top 12 stacks up with 2 days to go (deficit margins from the leader are indicated by red numbers in parentheses):

1. Dave Lefebre: 39-15
2. Gary Klein: 35-08 (4-07)
3. Randy Howell: 35-02 (4-13)
4. Takahiro Omori: 33-10 (6-05)
5. Casey Ashley: 33-07 (6-08)
6. John Crews: 32-07 (7-08)
7. James Elam: 32-06 (7-09)
8. Bobby Lane: 32-06 (7-09)
9. Steve Kennedy: 31-12 (8-03)
10. Josh Bertrand: 31-08 (8-07)
11. Greg Hackney: 31-02 (8-13)
12. Gerald Swindle: 30-14 (9-01)

It took an average of 12 pounds over the first 2 days to make the Top-50 cut – a number that was substantially higher than most had anticipated. Quality fish continue to move into the shallows to spawn and others, having completed the process, are on their way out, so the competitors who survived the field reduction will have some options on day 3.

There was a great deal of movement on the leaderboard, as half of the Top 12 on day 2 were newcomers. Omori's climb was by far the biggest, followed by Steve Kennedy's 21-place ascension with a 17-06 bag.

Seven-time AOY Kevin VanDam, who was 5th after day 1, caught just two fish for 3-08 and plummeted to 67th. Reigning Bassmaster Classic champion Edwin Evers also had a tough day (although not nearly as bad), dropping from 10th to 32nd after a 9-08 stringer.

Randall Tharp, the winner last week at Bull Shoals/Norfork and the AOY leader coming into this event, was the first angler out of the cut.

Lefebre didn't get a bite for the first hour of day 2, but figured things out quickly after that.

Saturday's Weather Channel forecast for the Decatur, Ala. area predicts cloudy skies with a high temperature of 83 degrees and wind out of the south to 10 mph.

The field will be reduced to the Top 12 after the weigh-in, with the winner determined Sunday based on highest cumulative weight.

Slower Start for Lefebre

> Day 2: 5, 21-03 (10, 39-15)

Lefebre had a limit within the first half-hour on day, but he didn't get a bite during the initial hour of day 2.

"I was trying to duplicate what I did yesterday, but things had changed a little bit," he said. "After awhile I figured out what was going on. What I'm fishing is an area – it's not a pattern. I've got four different patterns going within that area and I feel like something's going to work."

His sack consisted of two 5-pounders and three in the 4-pound range. He lost one fish that would've given him another half-pound or so.

"I did see a big one follow a buzzbait – it was a 7- or 8-pound giant. I saw it clearly and real close to the boat and it was huge, but I couldn't get it to bite."

He should have his backwater creek to himself on day 3. Casey Scanlon has been in there as well, but he missed the cut in 55th place.

Gary Klein has loaded up his livewell early on each of the first 2 days.

He's cautiously optimistic that the severe weather between rounds will enhance the bite.

"I think there's a chance it will – I'm trying to be positive, but also be prepared for the worst. This type of lake reminds me of a place I fish back home (in western Pennsylvania) all the time, and I know if we had this weather going into a tournament there, it'd make the fish go shallow and the water would dirty up and I could get right on top of them.

"I'm hoping for that, but I'm not expecting it."

2nd: Klein Struck Early Again

> Day 2: 5, 19-07 (10, 35-08)

Klein has had all the weight he's taken to the scale by 8 a.m. each day.

"I don't have the fish to win," he said. "I got real lucky yesterday and real lucky today and I don't know how tomorrow's going to pan out. I went back to the same place today hoping to catch three nice ones, and I got five.

"I found those fish on the second day of practice and I didn't set the hook on them, but I probably could've had 18 pounds if I did. I spent the rest of practice trying to duplicate that and I couldn't find it anywhere else. I went in there yesterday with some other boats, and fortunately they didn't have the bite figured out – at least not right there. Buy guys have seen me and they know what I'm doing, and some of them have matched that."

He has two short stretches that he goes back and forth on. He caught one good fish on his first pass of the morning, and then four more on the return trip.

His bag consisted of two largemouths, two smallmouths and a meanmouth (a smallmouth/spotted bass hybrid).

Randy Howell is pursuing an Elite Series win at Wheeler 18 years after he won an FLW Tour event there.

He has some areas that he hasn't hit yet that he may try on day 3. He said those areas might surrender 14 pounds tops.

"It's all about the points for me," he said. "This is the worst start to a season I've ever had (he came in at No. 85 in the AOY race) and it was time to pull my head out of my butt and start fishing.

"This storm may change things. In order to have a big day I need to catch five 4-pounders. If the weather gets crappy, it might keep some locals off the water. One negative about what I'm doing is I'm fishing real shallow and if it's a real busy day with a lot of spectators, that'd make it real tough."

3rd: Howell Switched Species

> Day 2: 5, 18-11 (10, 35-02)

A day after weighing an all-largemouth stringer, Howell boxed four smallmouths and only one green fish on day 2.

"I had a good day," he said. "It could've been an even better day, but I'm thankful for what I caught.

"I lost three smallmouth that were all 4 pounds or better. Those fish are just so crazy, and being postspawn-type fish they were biting funny anyway. I had two jump off on real long casts and one right at the boat that bent the hook after it hit hard and I jerked hard."

His largemouth was a 6-pounder that was the biggest fish of the day. He caught it right after losing his third big bronzeback when he threw back to where the smallmouth had gotten loose.

"(The largemouth) must've been following it because of all the splashing. In the end, it was a good thing that I lost the smallmouth, or else I never would've caught the largemouth."

The quartet of smallmouths in his bag were all schoolers working the shad spawn.

"I've fished for them every day, but before there weren't very many of them and they weren't very big. Today the shad spawn was better and I think some new, bigger fish moved in."

His first tour-level win was at Wheeler in an FLW derby 18 years ago, so winning this event would carry special significance.

"I've got a good opportunity here and I want to give myself a shot on the last day. To win an Elite Series event on this lake would mean more to me than just about anything."

4th: Omori Went to School

> Day 2: 5, 23-03 (10, 33-10)

Omori has never finished outside the money at Wheeler in five previous tour-level appearances. His massive day-2 bag ensured that the streak would be extended.

He had 20 pounds by 9 o'clock and all of his weight by 10. It all came from schooling fish that were feasting on shad.

"I fished the exact same spot yesterday and never had a bite," he said. "They just showed up today. They might not show up tomorrow."

He saw only three or four fish at given time in the three places he encountered the phenomenon, but they were all big. He had a 6-pounder hooked up that jumped twice before coming off.

His bag was topped by a 5-15 and he weighed nothing smaller than 4 pounds.

"If they show up tomorrow I'll have a chance at another big bag. I'll know (whether they're there) in the first 5 minutes."

98th: Frustration for Monroe

> Day 2: 5, 8-13 (10, 15-13)

Ish Monroe started the tournament in 14th place on the points list, but he'll take a major tumble in the wake of two sub-9-pound bags.

"I'm a little frustrated," he said. "Yesterday I went all the way up the river and then all the way back down to the Wheeler day and I didn't see hardly anybody fishing off shore. That means the fish were on the bank, and when they're on the bank, I'm supposed to catch them."

He spent some time fishing the shallows with a frog and also pitched a jig to rocky bluffs.

"I felt like I had an okay pattern that I could use to catch 10 or 12 pounds a day, but that didn't materialize. And other people caught them a lot better than I thought they would."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 108 anglers, 95 limits (5 fewer than day 1), 5 fours, 3 threes, 3 twos, 2 ones.

> Brent Chapman had a solid day 2, but a 7 1/2-pound stringer on day 1 relegated him to a 71st-place finish – his second straight missed cut after two Top-5s to begin the campaign. To read his competition wrapup, click here to go to Pro View Reports.
