Powroznik Pops 'Em Again, Opens 3-07 Lead

Jacob Powroznik has turned into quite a morning person at Toledo Bend.

The Bassmaster Elite Series newcomer, who'd never fished a tournament at the big reservoir prior to this week, hasn't had to fish to the buzzer at all so far. Heck, each of the first 2 days, he's been done stuffing his livewell before lunch time.

Today, the Virginian caught 23-06 and moved into the lead with 48-04 at the halfway point of what is shaping up to be a Texas/Louisiana slugfest. He's not expecting it to be this easy on the weekend, though, especially with Dean Rojas filling up his rearview mirror.

"It's been one of those things where everything has lined up straight so far and I've made the right decisions," Powroznik said. "We stil have a lot of fishing left and a lot that can happen."

Rojas, the 2011 Elite Series winner at Toledo Bend, brought in a day-best 24-15 to jump into 2nd place with 44-13. Chad Morgenthaler moved up 16 spots to 3rd behind a 24-13 stringer that gave him 43-12. Day-1 leader Jared Lintner sacked 16-13, but slipped to 4th with 42-04 while Skeet Reese hauled in 23-14 to round out the Top 5 with 41-05.

Angler of the Year points leader Mark Davis caught one of nine 20-pound stringers today (22-09) and moved into 8th with 40-07. Tomorrow, he'll be looking to make his fifth straight Top-12 cut dating back to last season.

Brandon Palaniuk more than doubled his weight (21-08) today and shot up 70 places to make the cut in 29th place. Gerald Swindle was another big mover, catching 18-08 to advance 46 spots to 33rd. Casey Ashley used a 21-pound bag to climb 35 spots to 12th entering the weekend.

J. Todd Tucker, who was 2nd after day 1, came in with four fish for 7-11 and dropped to 27th while Kelly Jordon was the last man to qualify for the weekend with a 28-14 total in 50th.

Several other tournaments are slated for Toledo Bend on Saturday, including the ALBC Best Six event that should make for some busy boating lanes and interesting scenarios when it comes to divvying up prime fishing areas. Spawners continued to grab the attention of many in the field and may continue to do so through the weekend while others were focused on key pre-spawn areas and post-spawn transition zones.

The lake was slick calm for most of the day, a far cry from the blustering conditions the field saw during practice. The temperature is expected to climb into the 80s tomorrow with clear skies and a southwest wind of 5 to 10 miles an hour. The Top 12 following Saturday will advance to Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Beds Produced For Powroznik

> Day 2: 5, 23-06 (10, 48-04)

The shad-spawn event that Powroznik witnessed yesterday and allowed him to catch a majority of his weight fizzled out after 30 minutes today, but he still came away with a kicker that got him started.

"Then I went to the fish I'd found on beds yesterday afternoon and caught a couple 2 1/2-pounders and left with five for close to 13 pounds," he said.

He then moved to another pocket that had some spawners and caught the three he was after.

"When I found them, I thought they were all 3 1/2s, but they turned out to be 5s," he added. "I only got like seven bites and was done pretty early again. I had what I had at 11."

He spent the rest of his day again crusing around pockets trying to identify potential spots that could produce more spawners tomorrow.

"I think I found enough to stay in it with 17 or 18 pounds," he said. "It's changing every day. The key has been making the right adjustments. I think I'm making the right decisions. Every day you put your boat in the water, you have to let them tell you what's going on. Like this morning, I didn't see any activity and then I look out and they were busting (shad) and schooling out over nothing and that made them hard to catch because they were suspending."

2nd: Rojas Getting Rolling

As many good days as Rojas has had at Toledo Bend, today was the best he's ever had and it's got him in position to contend for a third career victory there.

"I've caught a lot of 20-pound stringers here, but nothing like close to 25 that I caught today," he said. "The water level is different this year and it's fishing really big. I had no aspirations of catching that kind of weight at all. I was just fishing around and it happened."

What's more telling is he thinks he has a chance to match or come close to that result tomorrow.

"For me to catch that again is possible," he added. "I saw a lot more fish today than I did yesterday. It's getting warmer and that could be good for me."

His front deck is littered with about 10 rods as he's prepared for just about anything.

“I’m just fishing, doing what I know how to do best,” he said.

A 5-pounder late in the day, plus a 6-03, his kicker, anchored his bag. He said he spent some time trying to locate more spots that can possibly get him through the weekend.

“I’ve got a lot of experience on this lake, and I know I can’t win in one area,” he said. “I have to have multiple areas. I'm just fishing and there isn't a whole lot up there. It's going to get slimmer and slimmer. I just hope more move up there."

3rd: Flurries Key for Morgenthaler

It's been appointment fishing for Morgenthaler so far as he's had two incredible flurries between 10:30 and noon both days in the same the area.

"It's real interesting and it's got me a little baffled," he said. "I promise I'll be there tomorrow at that time. Luckily, there are not a lot of our guys fishing the same stuff. It's just a typical pre-spawn/spawn pattern."

During that time frame on Thursday, he caught a 7-pounder, a 5-pounder, a 4 and a 3 1/2 all in a 10-minute span. Today, the flurry consisted of an 8, a 5 and a 4.

"I've just been fortunate to get those bigger bites," he added. "It was a little tougher today. I didn't get as many bites."

The best part is he's not having to go far to catch his weight.

"I haven't filled (his gas tank) up in 2 days and I won't fill up tonight," he said. "The key is keeping my head down and keep fishing all day. That's been the biggest key. I'm not running all over the lake and I came into this event thinking I had to be careful that way. You can't get to running around here because you can get in trouble."

Zeroing in one or two areas has also benefited him, as has the delayed spring that has the fish a little more predictable.

"Knowing how I fish best, if I get into a couple areas and just grind it out on them, that's always how I've done my best," he said. "That's what I've got going here. It gets monotonous, but I'll take monotonous when I'm getting big bites."

4th: Lintner Left Scratching His Head

> Day 2: 5, 16-13 (10, 42-04)

The area Lintner started on yesterday was nearly void of bass today as carp had moved in toward the bank. He then moved to where he caught the bulk of his day-1 weight and scratched out nearly 17 pounds to stay in the Top 5.

"I don't know what was going on and I still don't quite understand what was happening," he said, referring to his first spot. "I went in there Thursday and there were a lot of bass on beds and fry-guarders roaming around. I felt like if I could get lucky I'd maybe catch a big one. I caught 20 keepers in there, but the big ones weren't on beds.

"Today, I went in there and it was like a shad spawn was happening. There was bait flickering everywhere. I threw a topwater and spinnerbait and couldn't buy a bite. I changed to a wacky worm and for 2 hours I had no bites and didn't even see any bass."

He wound up leaving after catching a 14-incher and a 2-pounder off the beds. He settled into where he'd caught them on day 1 and boated a couple keepers, including a 5-pounder, but the bite there started to tail off as well.

"I had about 12 bites, but the problem was today they were smaller," he said. "Yesterday I was starting to figure I was on a big-fish pattern, but today I wasn't getting that many bites."

He's thinking he'll start tomorrow where he's had the most success and try to expand on it.

"If I don't catch 'em I don't want to look back and say I shouldn't have been in that pocket with a wacky worm tied on a spinning rod," he said. "I'd rather not catch them doing what I like to do. The chance to get a big bite is there so I might as well spend all day doing it."

6th: Tharp Thrilled

> Day 2: 5, 24-13 (10, 41-02)

Randall Tharp stayed with his afternoon game plan from day 1 for the full day today and now he's kicking himself that he didn't make it a priority first thing Thursday.

"I found some grass deep and it's green and it's pretty, but I didn't put all of my eggs in that basket on day 1 and now I'm wishing I would've," he said. "I did today and it worked out.

"I was on a shad-spawn thing yesterday, but where I was running to I hit a fog wall and that prevented me from getting back in there."

He returned this morning to where he caught his weigh fish yesterday and swung an estimated 30 3-pounders into the boat.

"I went through a lot of fish," he said. "I think it's a place that'll replenish. It was amazing. Up until about 10 o'clock, I was thinking all of the fish were post-spawners but later on I could tell there were new ones in there. They weren't all battered up. I also saw about 20 fish up on beds that hadn't been there before."

He hadn't fished the lake prior to this week and has been impressed with how well it's fishing.

"It's unbelievable," he said. "It's hard for me to fathom how healthy this lake is. For never being here, it has so many fish in it. It's amazing. When I made one pass in my primary area, it's unbelievable how many bites you get."

7th: Faircloth Has 'Em Figured Out

Todd Faircloth, who has years of experience fishing Toledo Bend, says he hasn't seen the lake is this good of condition since the mid-1990s.

"It's a real fertile lake," he said. "It's in really good shape with a lot of grass and with the water being up now the fish have a lot of places to be."

He's uncovered his fair share so far, averaging a shade over 20 pounds through 2 days. Today, a 7-07 kicker that came later in the day anchored his bag.

"It's pretty much fishing how I expected it to," he said. "There area a few more fish spawning than what I anticipated. I know lot of guys are catching them that way. Today was tougher on me as far as number of bites. I'm staying in an area where I feel like there's potential to catch big ones. I know there are several more in that area. It's just a matter of coming across a few of them."

He said the slick morning conditions forced him to put on the brakes. He's narrowed his program to two baits and lets the conditions dictates which one gets wet.

"Any time you're on a lake with a lot of grass and it gets calm, the fishing tends to get tougher so I had to slow way down to get bites," he added. "I sampled some other stuff today trying to figure something else out, but I never got on anything else that I feel like has the potential like the area I'm in. It's just a big area with a lot of fish. The key is finding those little areas where they want to be."

47th: Scroggins Squeaks In

Terry Scroggins lost what he thinks was a 6-pounder today, but luckily for him it didn't prevent him from making the Top-50 cut and earning a paycheck this week.

"That's just how my whole year has been," he said. "I've had a real problem on day 2 of these tournaments. At Seminole, I lost a 7 and finished 55th. At Table Rock, I lost a 5 and was 63rd. It's been a rough year. It's just been weird things and bad luck. I'm on the wrong side of everything, but I'll get a grip on it here quick."

He entered the event intending to sight-fish for spawners, but that plan fizzled on day 1 when the fish he'd pinpointed on Wednesday had left.

Today, he threw a jerkbait in the morning and boated 17 pounds, then went looking at beds for upgrades.

"I didn't jerk long enough on day 1 because I knew I had those fish on beds, but when I saw they'd all left it made for a tough day," he said. "I jerked until about 10 today and caught them pretty good. I made the right adjustments. I just messed up yesterday."
