A brutally tough bite. A vicious cold front. A lake notorious for fishing small.

Brent Chapman overcame it all, not to mention a head cold and an extra day of competition to claim victory at the Lewisville Bassmaster Central Open and a provisional berth in the 2013 Bassmaster Classic. Fishing his first tournament since last June (when the Elite Series wrapped up), the Kansas pro outdueled Josh Bertrand in a 5-hour fish-off after the pair wound up tied with 20-09 following the Day-3 weigh-in.

The decisive bite of the fish-off came when Chapman boated a 6-05 largemouth on a wacky rig. Bertrand failed to weigh a fish, giving Chapman his first victory since 2005.

“It’s sinking in now after all the adrenaline coming away from it and just the relief of what’s in store for the whole year,” he said. “I get to look at my whole Elite Series season differently now in how I approach it and what I can do and can’t do, knowing that the Classic is made.

“To win at a tournament like this is huge. I learned so much from a tournament like this, especially going into the Classic. Here, the fishing pressure in certain areas was huge and it’ll be that same way in the Classic. I know the fishing will be way better in Shreveport, so if I can slow down and fish as thorough and be around a bunch of people like I was this week and catch fish, I know I can go there next week and catch fish.”

Chapman was 4th after Day 1 and dropped to 6th on Day 2 before climbing into a tie with Bertrand after the final regulation weigh-in. He won despite weighing just eight fish over the 3 1/2 days.

Here’s how he did it.

Practice

Chapman’s father, Ron, was entered in the event as a co-angler and the two got in 3 days of practice together, beginning the Sunday before the tournament. Brent was battling a bad cold all week and skipped fishing on Wednesday to visit a doctor and get some extra rest.

Knowing how small Lewisville tends to fish, he concentrated on a stretch in the back of a creek where a warm-water sewer discharge created some current. He covered the area with a jerkbait from the front deck while his father threw a dropshot off the back, drawing a handful of keeper bites between them during a 30-minute period one day.

“I wanted to see how many bites we could get there,” he said. “I knew if we didn’t stick them that someone else coming through there would. That gave me the confidence to know the potential of that spot.

“I knew it would fish extremely small so wherever a person started in that tournament, it was literally going to come down to basically a 20-yard stretch that they could control to themselves,” he added. “Other than that, it was really a toss-up. I felt like if I could get there and put my Power-Poles down and just hunker down, I felt like fish would travel through this little creek and I could catch them.”

Competition

> Day 1: 3, 10-13
> Day 2: 1, 2-05
> Day 3: 3, 7-07
> Fish-off: 1, 6-05
> Total = 8, 26-14

Chapman returned to the spot in the back of the creek to open the tournament and immediately bagged a keeper on a jerkbait. He switched to a Texas-rigged lizard and slow-dragged it along the bottom, but didn’t get bit. Changing again to a 6-inch finesse worm paid dividends immediately as he popped a 5-pounder to anchor his best sack of the event.

“I knew in this tournament that catching a couple fish would at least get you a paycheck," he said. "That allowed me to slow down and I had a hunch going into the day that something Texas-rigged just crawled along the bottom might work.

“Then I lost about a 3-pounder, which I was really bummed about because I thought that fish was going to come back to haunt me, and it did. Had I caught that fish, I’d have been done (Saturday).”

A nasty cold front blew in early on day 2, packing winds that muddied the water and effectively turned off most of the fish, including Chapman’s creek bite. In 6 hours, he didn’t get a bite in the creek – his partner boxed two – but he pulled a 2 1/2-ounder off a boat ramp on the way in to remain in the mix – 7-plus pounds behind day-2 leader Bradley Hallman.

Day 3 proved even tougher on the Top 12. Only seven fish came to the scales and three of them belonged to Chapman, who weighed 7-07 to erase his deficit. Bertrand, who bagged an 18-pound limit on day 1, managed one bite on day 3, but it was enough to pull him even with Chapman and set up the fish-off. Hallman zeroed and settled for 3rd.

“I honestly thought the tie was broken by the number of fish or by the heaviest bag,” Chapman said. "That is the case, but not for 1st place, so when they told us we were going to have a fish-off, I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? I have to go back out on this place?’”

The conditions eased up some for the fish-off and Chapman was concerned Bertrand would be able to recapture his day-1 magic using an umbrella rig along the dam at the south end of the lake. Adding to the stress was the lack of current and drop in water temperature at Chapman’s creek spot. The temps had been holding in the 53- to 55-degree range. That morning, it was down to 48.

“I didn’t have a lot to go on,” he said. “I went back to where I’d caught my fish. I was a little discouraged when I pulled in there and the water temperature was so low. They weren’t generating the water like they had been. I didn’t expect to catch a fish in there, but I figured I needed to try to at least fish through there to try to get a bite just in case.”

He went back to his finesse-worm program, but eventually switched to a wacky rig after watching his co-angler on day 2 catch a keeper in the same spot. Almost immediately, he got the eventual winning bite.

“That was huge,” he said. “I really thought I maybe had figured something out and was maybe going to catch some more, but I fished in there another hour and a half and caught one other 8-incher, and that was it.”

He hit a couple boat ramps and rocky points on the way in, hoping to add a couple more fish, but he lost a 2-pounder in the closing minutes.

“It got pretty stressful toward the end,” he said. “I felt my nerves building. I don’t play a lot of Texas Hold ‘Em, but I literally felt like I was in a poker tournament and I just went all-in and Josh went all-in and it was like, ‘OK, let’s see what you have.’

"I feel like I went all-in with pocket aces and a lot of times if you have pocket aces, you lose. I wasn’t sure if that 6-pound fish was going to win it for me or not.”

It turned out to be all that he needed as Bertrand failed to bring a fish to the scales.

“I didn’t know if I could beat him,” he said. “He had 18 pounds the first day and I really feel the only reason he didn’t catch them the next 2 days was because of the wind and not being able to fish the dam. The last day, he could fish it, so I thought for sure he’d go back to catching them again and all you hear is how great this Alabama rig is.

"I thought he’d wear them out and kick my rear. I got real fortunate.”

Pattern Notes

There was a lot to like about the area in the creek Chapman found. Most of the water was 6 to 8 feet deep, but the sweet spot was a 10-foot hole near a channel bend.

“That’s what attracted me to it because I thought it would be a real good holding spot for the fish and I felt like fish would be moving in that creek with the warm water,” he said. “Lo and behold after the tournament, I was talking to one of the local guys and he knows the place really well and he told that’s one of the best spots in that whole creek.”

The area around him saw heavy pressure the first 2 days, but once he dropped his Power-Poles in the water, he wasn’t budging.

“People were very respectful and I was able to try to capitalize on every bite I could get there,” he added.

Winning Gear Notes

> Worm gear: 7’6” heavy-action Wright & McGill Skeet Reese Heavy Cover rod, Wright & McGill Skeet Reese Victory casting reel (7:1 ratio), 16-pound Gamma fluorocarbon line, 3/16-ounce Eagle Claw Lazer tungsten weight (black), Eagle Claw bobber stop, 3/0 Lazer Trokar worm hook, 6-inch Tightlines UV finesse worm (UV purple).

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – “One of the biggest keys for sure was the UV in the worm. I feel like that bait will get a few more bites.”

> Performance edge – “My Power-Poles. Being able to put those down in the wind and not move. I fished super-, super-slow and super-thorough, and I think that was one of the biggest keys.”
