Lake Shasta's widely regarded as one of the most beautiful impoundments in North America. It's also regarded as one of the preeminent training grounds for the development and perfection of finesse techniques.

In fact, Shasta and nearby Oroville are where techniques like the dropshot and Senko first gained national notoriety. So it's no surprise that one of the world's top-ranked anglers, Brent Ehrler, won last weekend's Shasta Western FLW Series with the one-two punch of a Senko and dropshot.

Events at Shasta are typically won by ounces, not pounds, but with steady quality and a kicker each of the last 2 days, Ehrler (the No. 2-ranked angler in the world) was able to outdistance runner-up Chris Zaldain by an impressive 1 1/2-pound margin.

It was Ehrler's second Western Series win – his first was at Havasu last year. He was also the 2nd-place points finisher in the Western Series last year, as he was in 2007.

"It was an important win – for sure," Ehrler said. "Believe me, any win is going to be important. It's always nice. But to win the first one of the whole 2010 season, and have that under your belt, if I can cash a couple more checks the rest of the year, I'll have had a good year."

Under the revised pay-in/payout structure of the 2010 FLW Series, he pocketed almost $50,000. Here's how he did it.

Practice

Ehrler did some research prior to the event, and also talked with his fellow California compadres about what to expect.

He started just like he always does – he searched for a shallow bite with a Lucky Craft crankbait. He found nothing, then headed out deep.

"I was looking around the main-lake stuff – main-lake ledges, flats that dropped into deep water, and points," he noted of his deep search. "I just went out and fished from 30 to 50 feet deep and got to where I started to see the most fish in the 40-foot range – anywhere from 35 to 45. I knew that's where I needed to be fishing my bait.

"So I just went around and covered a lot of water and tried to concentrate on the main body of the lake," he added. "Sometimes tournaments are won (at Shasta) up the creeks, but they say the better quality's in the main lake, so that's where I concentrated my time."

He checked out a lot of points, as well as what he called "guts" - which are cuts and pockets. He tended to fish the middle of them, between the two points.

But he never fished his winning spot in practice. Instead, it was simply a spot where he graphed fish and marked a waypoint.

"I metered it and said, 'I'll just throw this into the mix,'" he noted. "It was at the very end of practice and I didn't have time to fish it."

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 11-05
> Day 2: 5, 9-12
> Day 3: 5, 11-07
> Day 4: 5, 10-04
> Total = 20, 42-12

Ehrler didn't visit his winning spot until 1:00 on the first day. When he arrived, he had 8 1/2 pounds in the box, but he culled up to 11-05 in about 15 minutes.

Right then and there he knew he had a special place.

"From what I hear, the thing about Shasta is fish tend to group by quality," he noted. "You can pull up on a spot and catch only 1-pounders, then pull up on another spot and catch only 2-pounders. This was one of those spots that Shasta's famous for."

He started there the second day and was done by 9:00. The next day he was done by 10:30, and he fished it all day on day 4. He went in search of new spots each of the first 3 days but never found similar quality.

The spot gave up a 3-pounder on day 3 and a 2 1/2-pounder on day 4, and those fish largely won the tournament for him.

Winning Pattern Notes

Ehrler used two techniques – a wacky-rigged Senko (with an O-ring and nail weight), and a dropshot Thin Senko and Roboworm.

He'd cast the Senko, but if he saw a fish on his graph during the retrieve, he'd burn the Senko back and sink a dropshot right onto the fish.

He estimated that he caught 70% of his fish casting, and the other 30% with the dropshot.

About his winning spot, he said: "It was just on the inside of a point, and there was a little secondary point. What I think was key was I was fishing right between the main-lake point and the secondary point, where it just formed one of those little corners. There was a deep flat down there. It dropped from visible land fairly quickly until it hit 40 feet, then it ran out a little ways before it dropped into open water.

"It seemed like the fish roamed back and forth on that flat between both points. It was only about 30 yards between the two, and there was zero bait there. I don't know why the fish pulled in there, but they were there."

His key depth was 42 feet.

Winning Gear Notes

> Casting rig: 7' Lucky Craft Shakey-Head rod, Abu Garcia Soron SX40 spinning reel, 12-pound Sunline PE braid (main line), 8-pound Sunline FC Sniper fluorocarbon (leader), 3/32-ounce Lunker City Nail weight, rubber O-ring, Owner Weedless Wacky hook, 5" Yamamoto Senko (dark-green-pumpkin/trans-amber/black-flake laminate color 926, cinnamon/black-flake, green-pumpkin/purple-copper-flake).

> He caught the majority of his fish on color 926.

> He slipped the O-ring onto the Senko and pushed it until it was on the egg sack. He then ran his hookpoint under the O-ring.

> He used the same rod, reel and line for the dropshot. His terminal tackle included an Owner Mosquito hook, 5" Yamamoto Thin Senko (green-pumpkin) and 4 1/2" Roboworm Straight-Tail (oxblood).

The Bottom Line

  • Main factor in his success –"I think it was my tackle – the Yamamoto Thin Senko and regular Senko, as well as the Roboworm, and the rod combo with the Sunline braid. I could fish an 8-pound leader, and I was able to catch a lot of fish without having to retie when it was fast and furious. But I'd also say that one of the biggest factors was my Lowrance X38. I found that spot without fishing it, and I also caught a lot of key fish on the graph. In fact, the biggest ones I weighed in, I dropped right to them and watched them eat it."

  • Performance edge – See "main factor" above.
