Chris Lane concluded the 2009 Bassmaster Elite Series season on a down note, with finishes of 59th or worse in each of the last four events. Perhaps his victory at last week's Okeechobee Southern Bassmaster Open in his native Florida will be a springboard to a better Elite run in 2010.

He put himself in contention with a stout sack on day 2

that included a 7-pounder, then sealed the win the following day with a bag that he considered only mediocre – until the weigh-in proved otherwise. He capitalized on a final-day stumble by previous leader Randall Tharp and held off the runner-up, his brother Bobby, by about 3 pounds.

His 41-02 total over 3 days might have been pedestrian by Okeechobee standards, but it was stellar considering the frigid conditions that the tournament began under (34 pros failed to weigh a keeper on either of the first 2 days). It was his second triumph in 5 years in the event, which this year consisted of a 199-boat field littered with standouts from both major tours.

Here's how he did it.

Practice

Lane, who now lives in Alabama, had been hearing from brothers Bobby and Arnie about how cold it was in Florida 2 weeks ago, but he had a hard time believing it until he actually got there.

"They'd warned me that I'd better bring warm clothes," he said. "When I got down there the (overnight) temperatures were 25 and 26 degrees. It was so cold that fish were dying."

He started practice by throwing a lipless crankbait along the outside edge of eelgrass beds. He caught a 3 1/2-pounder and a 1 1/2 on the first day and figured he was on to something.

A lot of other competitors began focusing on the eelgrass over the next 2 days and his bites became few and far between. He began flipping mats in the 43-degree water, but that didn't really work out, either.

"There was just no way to predict what the fish were going to be doing. There were no answers to be had at that point in time."

His brothers had mentioned that they'd picked up a few flipping fish, so he focused on that tactic again on the final practice day. He found a single 100-yard hydrilla mat where he got a bite on each end, and that gave him a little bit of confidence to take into opening day.

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 8-12
> Day 2: 5, 17-12
> Day 3: 5, 14-10
> Total = 15, 41-02

He began day 1 on his best patch of eelgrass and got a couple of bites, but didn't feel right about the conditions there. The water had warmed to the mid-50s, but there was no wind whatsoever.

He moved to his matline and joined a flotilla of boats there. He stayed and flipped until 11:00, but never had a bite.

A mat in the notorious Monkey Box, where about a third of the field was congregated, was his next stop. He and his co-angler both salvaged limits there and he went to bed in 25th place.

He started day 2 in the shallows, where he knew some big fish with spawning on their minds would move eventually, but there was nothing going on. Then it was back to the Monkey Box mat, where he boated 11 pounds worth of fish on two flips (the 7-pounder and a 4).

A trio of 2-plus-pounders rounded out his stringer and he climbed to 2nd place, about 4 1/2 pounds behind Tharp.

He was inclined to start shallow on day 3, but the mat had been too good to him. It didn't produce that morning, though, and at 9:30 he moved to the skinny water.

He started alternating between two Gambler topwater baits – the Flapp'n Shad and the Cane Toad.

"It was really windy and I could see the fish start to move a little bit," he said. "They were actually eating the bait instead of just slapping at it like they had been, and I caught about 12 pounds."

Still, in his own mind, he was struggling.

"It was 1:00 on a perfect day, right before a front, and I just knew guys were hammering them," he said. "My brother and Tharp had been real consistent and I was sure they were catching them."

The Cane Toad eventually enticed a pair of 3-pounders that bumped his bag up to 14 pounds, but he still figured he'd come up short.

"When I got to the weigh-in, guys were saying, 'I think you've got it.' Tharp only had one fish and Bobby said he had about 11 pounds, but I've seen his 11 creep up to 21 or 22 when they got put on the scale.

"It was an absolute surprise to me that 14 pounds was enough to win."

Winning Gear Notes

> Cranking gear: 7'2" medium-action All Star rod, Abu Garcia Revo STX casting reel (6.4:1 ratio), 15-pound Berkley Trilene 100% fluorocarbon line, Azuma Shaker-Z lipless crankbait (Aztec).

> Flipping gear: 7'6" All Star flipping stick, Abu Garcia Revo Winch casting reel (5:1 ratio), 65-pound Stren Super Braid line, 1 1/2-ounce Gambler tungsten screw-in weight, 3/0 Gambler KO hook, Gambler BB Cricket (blue shadow).

> Topwater gear: 7'4" heavy-action All Star rod, Abu Garcia Revo STX reel, 50-pound Stren Super Braid, 5/0 Gambler Double Trouble Toad Hook, Gambler Cane Toad (Lane toad)

> Lane said the Cane Toad color was invented by him and Gambler owner Val Osinski. "I wanted one that imitated the exact colors of a shiner minnow."

> He threw the Flapp'n Shad (Arkansas shiner) on the same gear as the Cane Toad, with the exception of a 4/0 KO hook in place of the Double Trouble.

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – "Probably making the move on the second day to go back to that mat because I caught my two biggest fish of the whole tournament."

> Peformance edge – "My whole boat rig – the Legend boat, the Mercury motor, the Atlas jackplate and the Power-Poles. I had to be able to get where I was going, and then I had to be able to get back."
