Greg Hackney stunned the crowd, and the field, at the Forrest Wood Cup in Pittsburgh today when his day-2 limit settled at 11-12, and he reached into his bag and hoisted two 3-plus-pound smallmouths.

Mike Iaconelli, to the side of the stage, quipped: "Did he run to Lake Erie to catch those?"

Hack's limit was about 3 pounds heavier than the next heaviest bag caught so far, and it was about twice as heavy as Luke Clausen's 50th-place, 5-10 total for 2 days.

Added to his three-fish, 3-01 opening weight, the monumental catch catapulted Hack up 35 spots to lead the Top 10 cut.

He actually changed rivers today, and abandoned his Ohio River area to fish three locks up the Allegheny. He said it took a little while to dial things in, but once he did, he stopped catching shorts and hooked mostly keepers.

He also said he got a lot of help from above.

The lead, however, matters not, as the Top 10 anglers who made today's cut will all start with zero weight tomorrow. Still, here's a rundown on the Top 10 pros, and a little bit about what they're doing.

Day-1 leader Dave Lefebre fished the Ohio again. He worked two points on a single bar yesterday for his 8-13 limit. He didn't make a single cast to those points today, and instead concentrated on the bank. At one point he left to lay off the area entirely, but returned after some anxiety about the cut and culled one more time to end the day with 5-11 and 14-08 total. He made the cut in 2nd.

Right behind him was former Cup champion Scott Suggs, who stayed in the Allegheny again today. Suggs weighed three fish for 6-04 to make the cut in 3rd with 14 pounds even.

Stren qualifier Cody Meyer from California gave up on the Mon and fished the Allegheny today. A 7-07 limit there boosted him six spots and he made the cut in 4th.

The fifth-place cut position was occupied by David Curtis, who's fishing the Ohio. Curtis put up a safe 4-12 limit today, which dropped him three spots from his day-1 position.

Bryan Thrift, with four fish and 5-08 today, moved up two spots to make the cut in 6th. He fished the same Ohio River areas he worked yesterday.

Larry Nixon, who began the day in 3rd, returned to his Ohio River spot this morning, saw it was too muddy from the overnight and morning rain, then retreated back up to the Pittsburgh pool. He weighed four fish for 3-09 and made the cut in 7th.

Mike Iaconelli fished his Allegheny water for the final time today and came in with four fish for 4-02, which dropped him three spots to 8th. He said he'll decide tonight whether to fish the Mon or Ohio tomorrow – he's got two holes in each river that he feels confident in.

David Walker began the day back at 15th, but caught a 6-04 limit in the Ohio today and made the cut in 9th.

The final cut position belonged to California FLW Series qualifier Rusty Salewske, who caught a 5-03 limit and dropped one spot from his day-1 position. Salewske fished four locks up the Allegheny again, and will have that water all to himself tomorrow.

Here's a summary of the Top 10 who'll fish the next 2 days:

1. Greg Hackney: 14-13
2. Dave Lefebre: 14-08
3. Scott Suggs: 14-00
4. Cody Meyer: 13-10
5. David Curtis: 13-08
6. Bryan Thrift: 12-02
7. Larry Nixon: 11-13
8. Mike Iaconelli: 11-12
9. David Walker: 11-08
10. Rusty Salewske: 11-07

The cut was right about at yesterday's prediction – 11 1/2 pounds – and Craig Powers was first out. A missed fish yesterday left Powers one short of a limit and cost him the cut.

Dave Lefebre wants to bring a third trophy home to the City of Champions.

Two pros fell out of the cut today – Greg Bohannan (6th to 23rd) and Adam Wagner (7th to 24th).

With 67 fewer boats on the water, a slight bump in weights wouldn't be a surprise tomorrow. Also, the rise in water level, and muddying of the water, has ceased, so water should fall and clear somewhat overnight. However, the increased current today seemed to help the big-fish bite – several 3-plus-pounders made it to the scales – so a lessening of current could hurt in the long run.

The predominant pattern, at least on the Allegheny, is the mayfly bite. Hatches are occurring around certain cover elements – notably overhanging trees – and small topwaters were a strong play today.

Finesse plastics, spinnerbaits and small crankbaits also seem to be working.

Tomorrow will certainly present a much clearer picture of how patterns and areas will mature, and how the rivers stack up against one another with a 10-boat field.

Hack Gets Aggressive

> Day 1: 3, 3-01
> Day 2: 5, 11-12 (8, 14-13)

Hackney said his day-1 approach, when he stayed in the Pittsburgh pool and weighed just 3 pounds, was too conservative. He made up for that today with his three-lock run up the Allegheny that produced a bag that some thought was all but impossible on this fishery.

He caught a bunch of short fish early, but figured out what the bigger ones wanted and got them into the boat without the benefit of a net (which he'd neglected to bring).

"My back was against the wall and I had to make it happen," he said. "The water didn't dirty up as much up there – it was high, but it was clean. I had one (keeper) and I'd caught a bunch of little ones, but then I dialed into what was going on and caught the rest real quick.

"I'm fishing a pattern, not a spot, and I'm throwing three different baits. What I'm doing I'd done in practice, but it just didn't work on day 1. I should be able to power-fish a little more tomorrow, which is what I like to do."

He ended up catching seven or eight keepers and quit fishing with a lot of time remaining in the day. He actually saw one of his two big ones before he caught it from next to a log.

He doesn't expect things to be quite so easy on day 3.

"The water's going to be higher because it rained a bunch today, and that will have some effect. Plus, there haven't been a lot of bags like that one caught around here. I'd gladly take two consistent bags to win it."

2nd: Lefebre Laid Off

> Day 1: 5, 8-13
> day 2: 5, 5-11 (10, 14-08)

Two pins affixed to the front of Lefebre's shirt reveal his intensity level. To one side is a pin of the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins. To the other is a Super Bowl Champion Steeler pin.

Lefebre wants to bring one more trophy home to the City of Champions.

"Since the Steelers won the Super Bowl, I just had a feeling the Pens would pull it off," the Pennsylvania pro said. "It was an amazing story for them - just a storybook ending. Even since then, I've been thinking about this (Cup). I'm hoping it happens. But I keep saying it – it's not up to me.

Scott Suggs gained a spot in the standings today despite a bag that contained just three fish.

"I want to win, but I know it's going to take a little help from upstairs," he added. "I'll just do the best I can and let God do the rest. I made the Top 10. I'm so relieved."

As mentioned, he stayed off his primary area today and fished to the side of it. It wasn't really a gamble, he said, because he knew he could pull back onto his main area and fill his limit if need be. So his spot's essentially had a full day to rest, and if the water does clear overnight, his fish should be snapping tomorrow.

Nixon fished around him yesterday, and Lefebre thinks Nixon will be back. But the two are fishing different micro-spots within the area.

About potential backup water, Lefebre noted: "I've got other things. I haven't fished hardly anything yet. That's why I feel pretty good about this. The Top 10 – what you have to do is get there. Then you get a Hackney bite and it's all over.

"Anybody in the Top 10 can catch a big one, and it's hard to come back against that. It's up to the Lord right now."

3rd: Good Quality for Suggs

> Day 1: 5, 7-12
> day 2: 3, 6-04 (8, 14-00)

Although he caught just three keepers, Suggs' bag tied for 8th best of the day and he moved up a place in the standings. He fished the same pool on the Allegheny that he had on day 1, but made an adjustment due to the increased flow.

"I had no idea I had that I had that much weight with just three fish," he said. "I had to go where (the flow) was slower, but I fished the same way."

He's catching most of his fish on soft plastics. He'd thought that dark-colored baits might be the ticket today, but they didn't produce. He added some chartreuse and orange to the green-pumpkin offerings he'd used on day 1 and they garnered his two best bites.

He hooked one other keeper, but broke it off.

Cody Meyer abandoned the Monongahela in favor of the Allegheny today and caught another strong sack.

With Mike Iaconelli seemingly committed to new water tomorrow, Suggs may have his pool all to himself.

"I'm rotating stuff because everything's a timing deal. I don't know what's going to happen from day to day but I know I've caught eight keepers so far, and three of them have been 2 1/4 to 3 pounds."

4th: Meyer's Move Paid Off

> Day 1: 5, 6-03
> Day 2: 5, 7-07 (10, 13-10)

The 26-year-old Meyer was the lone member of the day-1 Top 10 who fished the Monongahela. He went three locks up the Allegheny today and caught a bag that was more than a pound heaver than his first-day haul.

"I'm just using finesse tactics," he said. "I caught four on a dropshot and one on a small topwater.

"It was slow to start with, and then I caught three real quick. I caught my fifth one at about 10:30 and that was my last keeper bite. After that I jumped around looking for new stuff."

He divulged that his dropshot bait is a Jackall Cross Tail Shad.

His bag consisted entirely of smallmouths and two weighed two pounds or more. He went back to check on the Mon this afternoon and found the water extremely murky, so he'll likely return to the Allegheny for day 3.

"I'm not really sure what I can catch tomorrow – my pre-fish was really bad."

5th: Curtis Throwing Spinnerbait

> Day 1: 5, 8-12
> Day 2: 5, 4-12 (10, 13-08)

David Curtis has won the Stren Championship and the TTT Championship and who knows how many other regional and local fish-offs in Texas.

When asked if this cut feels different than any other, he said: "I'm kind of nerved right now, but I'm actually feeling a little calm. I've been working really hard. Iaconelli touched on that earlier (onstage) – the mental tiredness. I'm just drained at the end of the day. I experienced that yesterday and today.

"I can't even think beyond right now weight-wise (for the next 2 days) or anything like that," he added. "Like I said, it's a grind. I guy's going to have to be fortunate to get a couple good bites. That's probably who's going to win this tournament."

He noted the mud and rising water changed his Ohio River fish. He's throwing a spinnerbait, and yesterday they were chomping. He had to cover more water today, but fish slower to get bites. And he only hooked five keepers.

About tomorrow, he said: "I had some other stuff found in practice in the Allegheny, and I'm real excited about going to what I haven't touched, but I think the mud and rain may have ruined it, so right now I'm planning on going back to (the Ohio)."

A few other notes from Curtis: He's keying on the mayfly hatch and he's throwing a few lures in addition to the spinnerbait. The mayfly hatch, however, seemed to "peter out" today, he said.

6th: Thrift Slides in with 4

> Day 1: 5, 6-10
> Day 2: 4, 5-08 (9, 12-02)

Thrift continued to rely primarily on one bank in the Ohio. It produced two of his four keepers today, and one was a 3-pounder.

"I did the same stuff," he said. "I've been spending a lot of time in that one place and I know there's quality fish there, but I just don't know if there's enough of them.

"There's also a sunk boat in about 5 feet of water that I've caught a good keeper off of both days. I hope the current doesn't get so heavy that it washes it away."

He's catching his fish on a 1/8-ounce buzzbait and a small popper.

"I'm real jacked up to make my first Top 10 of the year. I've had several chances to do it – Guntersville, Table Rock, Beaver – but it just never fell into place."

7th: Nixon had to Relocate

> Day 1: 5, 8-04
> Day 2: 4, 3-09 (9, 11-13)

Nixon started the day in the Ohio, where he'd caught a strong bag on day 1, but the increased flow killed his action there. He finally bailed on it at about noon and locked back into the Pittsburgh pool.

He caught his four keepers on a Berkley 3-inch Gulp! Fry fished on a dropshot rig.

"The current was running so hard (in the Ohio) that I had to keep the trolling motor on high just to move the boat," he said. "And those smallmouths don't like the clouds – when it gets deep and dark down there, they don't feed good."

He said he'd go back and check the conditions on the Ohio tomorrow and then make his decision about where to fish.

"I'll have to go and see if the current's changed (in the Ohio). If it has, there's plenty of fish there for a limit. But I'm confident no matter what I have to do. I'm always confident I can go out and catch four or five bass."

8th: Ike Will Change Pools

> Day 1: 5, 7-10
> Day 2: 4, 4-02 (9, 11-12)

Ike's plan for tomorrow? "I'll go to a new pool and just go fishing," he said. "That's how you win tournaments."

He actually had his limit fish today – a smallmouth that he could get to measure with about 5 minutes of work. But since he primarily fishes BASS, he wasn't sure how the FLW tournament staff would work the fish, so he let it go. He sat through most of weigh-in with his "stomach tied in knots," he said.

Turns out it didn't matter and he came out 5 ounces ahead of the cut with his four.

"I fished a good day," he noted. "And I really did what I thought I needed to do, which was catch a limit. I found the right way to do it today, and hopefully I can make it happen again tomorrow. But tomorrow will be a day of big adjustments. I have to change up tomorrow."

He's not yet sure where he'll fish tomorrow, but is "pretty sure" he'll "abandon the Allegheny." He has significant confidence in all three rivers, and found a couple of spots where he thinks the tournament could be won.

"From what I saw, I just feel the (pool I fished) is used up," he added. "I really feel it's time to leave that pool. I want to win and I don't think I can do it there."

9th: Walker Not Tied Down

> Day 1: 5, 5-04
> Day 2: 5, 6-04 (10, 11-08)

Walker continued to junk-fish in three pools on the Ohio and caught more keepers than he could weight for the second straight day.

"I caught 10 keepers yesterday and about 25 shorts," he said. "Today I caught six keepers and a dozen shorts. That tells me the bite's getting tougher and the fish are getting harder to catch."

He's weighed fish from all three pools but said the farther downstream he goes, the more likely he'll connect with a 2-pounder. He's throwing a variety of baits and fishing whatever looks good to him at the time.

He's confident that he can catch two more limits over the weekend.

"I don't see why not. Mentally, I've got my head around what I need to do here. If I keep fishing for 12-inchers and keep catching limits, then I should be right in there on the last day. That's my gameplan and I'm sticking to it.

"Dirty water is my favorite thing. It might be a negative to the fish, but it's just what I need to keep my head in the game. When it's low and clear like it was for the Classic, it's harder to make the necessary adjustments."

10th: Salewske Switched

> Day 1: 5, 6-04
> Day 2: 5, 5-03 (10, 11-07)

Salewske came within 2 ounces of reliving a nightmare.

Two years ago at the Ouachita Cup, he began day 2 with a huge buffer against the cut. He laid off his fish, the field whacked 'em, and he worked the Fun Zone for the next 2 days.

He didn't lay off today, but still cut things a little close. He fished the same place as yesterday – four locks up the Allegheny, where mayflies were hatching. But he changed baits today. And he had company up there, including Takahiro Omori and Brett Hite, but was the only one in that pool who made the cut, so he'll have his run of the place tomorrow (barring local traffic).

"I'm very excited," he said. "It's a relief. The water came up maybe 2 feet and the fish changed completely. I spent 2 hours without a bite throwing that little topwater, then my co-angler caught the first keeper with a dropshot. I picked up a small 1/4-ounce jig and caught them pretty quick.

"They were on the bottom today, around little drainpipes. I caught one off every drainpipe. The water was clearer there.

"It's always a little bit of luck, but I practiced hard for 4 days and found this spot at about 10:00 on the last day of practice," he added. "I put the trolling motor on 100 and saw keepers swimming off the bank. I saw all I needed to see."

12th: Martin One Short

> Day 1: 5, 4-12
> Day 2: 4, 6-09 (9, 11-05)

Scott Martin's Cup tale is one of nine fish.

He caught his limit yesterday, but broke two keepers off today, and despite a 3-pounder in the bag, missed the cut by 2 ounces.

"Absolutely I'm disappointed," he said. "The two I broke off today were in the 2-pound range – maybe bigger. It cost me, of course.

"A lot of my water got really muddy, and the bites really decreased," he added. "But I felt like I could have maybe won the tournament on the stretch of the Allegheny I was fishing. It was loaded. There are some good ones in there, and to catch that big one was really cool. But you have to catch a limit here every day to have a shot."

He threw a small Berkley tube yesterday, but ran out and switched to a small black-and-blue creature bait today.

13th: Kreiger Mixed

> Day 1: 3, 4-09
> Day 2: 5, 6-10 (8, 11-03)

Koby Kreiger came up 4 ounces short of the cut, and he did that with only eight fish.

"I needed to catch one more yesterday," he said. "I know where it was too. Dion (Hibdon) came in 10 minutes behind me and caught one off the same dock. That's just the way it goes.

"It's the best finish I've had in one of these things so far," he added. "But I was hoping to make the Top 10, so it's a bittersweet deal. You're happy to get a good payday, but you'd like your chance to win a million. We'll see what happens next year."

He fished the Allegheny and caught his fish on a ChatterBait and dropshot.

14th: No Culls for Fukae

> Day 1: 5, 4-08
> Day 2: 5, 6-02 (10, 10-10)

Shinichi Fukae managed to weigh two limits, but it wasn't easy – he caught exactly five keepers each day. He pre-practiced for 2 weeks in the Allegheny, but switched his focus to the Ohio during the official practice session when it became evident that the Allegheny was favored by the vast majority of the field.

"Five each day was it," he said. "I didn't catch too many shorts – maybe 10 to 15 a day."

20th: High Water Hurt Biffle

Tommy Biffle boated just three small keepers today and fell eight places.

"The current was running a lot harder and the water got dirtied up, and it was a lot different," he said. "It was pretty easy yesterday and I had a good practice, but everything changed today.

"I had a lot of waypoints where I'd caught keepers in practice and pre-practice, and I caught fish around just about every one of those waypoints. But today, a lot of them were too short."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 77 anglers, 17 limits (8 fewer than day 1), 15 fours, 11 threes, 12 twos, 12 ones, 10 zeroes (5 more than yesterday).

> In a ceremony onstage prior to weigh-in, Forrest and Nina Wood were enshrined in the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame. They were inducted years ago, but enshrinement is the highest honor bestowed by the Hall. Comments by Wood will be published soon.

> Meyer, who works as an auto wholesaler in Redding, Calif., might be the next superstar to emerge from the West. He's already won the Western Stren points title this year and is leading that race in the Western FLW Series.

> The Top 5 anglers have all surpassed Kevin VanDam's 3-day winning total from the 2005 Bassmaster Classic. Emcee Charlie Evans praised the work of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission for the work that's been done to improve the fishery over the past 4 years.

> Salewske called out his fellow western pros onstage today and urged them to participate in FLW's events. "Next year's probably our last year for the (Western) FLW Series," he said. "Nobody's told me that – that's my speculation – but we only had 85 boats at the last tournament. That's ridiculous."

> Kevin Snider, fishing his first Cup, rebounded after a super-light day 1 with 7 1/2 pounds today. He moved up 34 spots to finish 16th. "Yesterday killed me – I just didn't have the bites. I thought I'd have a limit for sure. And today I thought I'd hardly have any. That's just the way fishing goes sometimes. I sure would have liked to have fished for that million."

> Greg Bohannan began the day in 5th, but imploded with a 1-pound day 2 and finsihed 23rd. "It got a little tough on me today," he said. "I was fishing the Ohio and the water came up overnight. There was a lot of trash floating and it was hard to fish. I probably should have left early. I stuck around too long."

> BFL All-American champ Adam Wagner caught a single fish today and fell 17 spots to finish 24th. "I have no complaints," he said. "I just didn't get keeper bites today." He also said he's ready to step up to the next level of competition. "I'm ready to do it – my wife's said it's okay."

> Mike Hawkes was in a strong position to make the cut after day 1, but the Texan blanked today and finished 47th.

> Jim Dillard missed his lock yesterday when he misread his card and had to turn loose the four fish he caught. He weighed 5-11 today and finished 49th. "It was the biggest mistake of my career," he said.

> Jay Yelas caught one fish today to stave off a fourth consecutive goose-egg at the Three Rivers. His Big Stick report is short and to the point. To read it, click here.

> J.T. Kenney and 1997 Cup champion David Fritts were the only anglers to go keeperless on both days.
