Roy Hawk never goes to California's Clear Lake thinking about specific techniques. His sole objective during practice there is to find groups of big fish, wherever they might be and whatever type of cover they might be relating to. He'll worry about catching them later.

"It's important that you don't settle for catching keepers there," said the resident of Salt Lake City, Utah, who's fished the lake numerous times over the years on various circuits. "You need to be looking for the real big bites – at least 4- and 5-pounders.

"If you know where they are, you can figure out a way to catch them – at least some percentage of them. You start fishing the conditions at that point and adapt to whatever they're doing."

He adapted well enough over the first 2 days to gain a spot in the Top 10 of the recent Clear Lake Western Stren. Then he busted a 33-pound sack – the biggest of the tournament and biggest of his competitive career– on the final day to overcome a 10 1/2-pound deficit and claim the victory. That monstrous bag included a 12-pound pig, which was the largest bass he'd ever caught.

His 73-07 total outdistanced runner-up Steve Ericksen of California by 2-06. Here's how he did it.

Practice

Hawk had a very limited practice for the event – perhaps 5 or 6 hours total over a 3-day period.

"That was probably fortunate for me," he said. "I'd been talking to people who fish there a lot and they said fish were in one place one day, and then gone the next. I knew that living in the moment would be very important in this tournament.

"I found one tiny point in a big area (near Rattlesnake Island) that I knew from the past was a good area. My partner and I both got bit on about five or six casts in a row and I had one on that felt real heavy that I shook off."

He knew he wouldn't be able to camp there and win the tournament, but it at least gave him a place to start on day 1.

"I didn't think they were stacked up and feeding on that one little point, but I knew they were somewhere around."

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 20-02
> Day 2: 5, 20-05 (10, 40-07)
> Day 3: 5, 33-00
> Total = 15, 73-07

The last of the heavy rain that pounded Northern California over a 10-day period was still around when day 1 dawned. Hawk caught a limit fairly quickly, and one of that quintet was a 9-pounder that bit a Lucky Craft LV500 crankbait.

"That allowed me to go out and pre-fish some more and check out some other parts of the lake," he said. "I got a good feel for the overall lake and found some good stretches that were holding good keepers."

The rain gave way to scattered clouds and slightly warmer temperatures for day 2, and his first fish weighed about 6 1/2 pounds. It also came via the lipless crank.

"After that I just caught average fish throughout the day. I was happier than I was after the first day, though, because I didn't have half my weight on just one fish. I'd gotten a better overall average, and that made me a little more comfortable.

"I was guesstimating I had about 18 pounds and I didn't know if that would be enough to get me into the cut. It turned out I barely made it (in 8th place)."

He was thrilled to discover that he'd be paired with co-angler Mark White of Arizona on the final day.

"We're such good friends that if he wins, I win. We would've been ecstatic if we both won it (White finished 2nd on the co-angler side, just 9 ounces behind winner Kyle Baker – Ed.).

The morning started out foggy, but the mist lifted to reveal a bluebird sky. White caught a 7-pounder right off the bat at Rattlesnake Island and had his 16 1/2-pound limit by 11:00. Meanwhile, Hawk had not gotten a bite.

"We moved around quite a bit and went back by the Keys to see if anything was moving shallow, and every place we stopped he caught one on a Pepper jig. He was just dragging it behind the boat more than anything."

Hawk's monstrous final-day bag was headed up by this 12-pound hawg.

Hawk's time was about to arrive, though. At about 11:30 he caught a 6-pounder on a Lucky Craft CB D-20 crankbait, and the next 90 minutes were nothing short of glorious.

"I'd been mixing it up with the LV500, a jig, a jerkbait and a swimbait, but that fish kind of cued me in to what was going on and I stuck with the CB D-20 the rest of the way,"

That was a good move because his next bite was a 9-pounder. Then he caught a 4 and another keeper before tying into the biggest bass of his life – a 12-pound giant that eventually sealed the win for him.

"When we got it in the boat, were were like, is it 10 pounds or 15 or what? I wanted to whoop and holler, but there were some (FLW College Fishing) guys and some recreational fishermen around, so we just acted like it was no big deal and just slipped it into the box.

"Then I looked at Mark and asked real quietly, 'What just happened?' It was like I was mesmerized."

He never got another bite, but that didn't bother him much.

"I thought I had a shot to win, but I knew how much of a lead (Ericksen) had on me. Catching those fish was so awesome and I knew I'd done everything I could do, so I was going to be satisfied with whatever the results were.

"I knew when the day started that I had to have a miracle bag to win. And at that lake, that's always a possibility."

Winning Gear Notes

> Lipless crank gear: 7'3" medium-heavy Powell 734 rod, Quantum PT Tour Edition casting reel (7:1 gear ratio), 16-pound Sugoi fluorocarbon line, Lucky Craft LV 500 (American shad or chartreuse shad).

> He slow-rolled the bait along the bottom and used the rod to give it action. The purpose of the high-speed reel was to achieve fast line pick-up.

> Crankbait gear: 7'6" medium-action unnamed rod, Quantum Energy casting reel (5.1:1 ratio), 14-pound Sugoi fluorocarbon, Lucky Craft CB D-20 (ghost minnow or chartreuse shad).

> Both of his big fish on the final day were enticed by the ghost minnow bait.

> Jig gear: 7'3" heavy-action Powell 735 rod, same reel and line as lipless crankbait, 1/2- or 3/4-ounce Pepper jig (green-pumpkin), Yamamoto Double Tail grub trailer (green-pumpkin).

The Bottom Line

Main factor in his success – "Just fishing with whatever my gut feeling was and adapting to different conditions each day. I didn't get stuck on one spot or pattern and when I got onto something, I stayed with it until it didn't work anymore."

Performance edge – "The lures themselves, just because I have so much confidence in them. If you looked through my gear, probably 98% of my hardbaits are Lucky Craft."
