James Niggemeyer made only four checks in 11 Bassmaster Elite Series events in 2008, so it wasn't a lucrative year. His recent victory at the Toledo Bend Bassmaster Central Open got the new year off to a strong start – both from financial and momentum standpoints.

Day 1 was canceled due to a forecast for high winds, but he and runner-up Jerrel Pringle ended up fishing a third day anyway – or at least part of one. They were tied with 37-14 totals after the 2 days of regulation competition and, per bass rules, settled the matter with a 3 1/2-hour fish-off the following day.

Niggemeyer, a Texas resident by way of California, caught a 14-01 limit to win the fish-off while Pringle boated only three keepers for just over half that amount. He sight-fished throughout the event and was forced to explore water he hadn't visited in practice or the tournament in search of spawners on the final day.

The victory was his second at the Open level – he also won at South Carolina's Santee Cooper Reservoir in 2005. Here's how he did it.

Practice

A spate of chilly weather swept over the Many, La. area in the days leading up to the tournament, and that put a damper on the action during practice.

"The bite kind of took it on the chin there," Niggemeyer said. "You had to work pretty hard to get one. I got a couple by slow-rolling a spinnerbait and I flipped a couple, but nothing big. And then I started seeing some on beds."

He'd competed in an Open there 7 years ago in which he was in 15th place heading into the final day before plummeting to 42nd. Bed-fish had gotten him to within striking distance of the leaders before they ran out, and with bites hard to come by, he figured it'd be wise to give them another go.

"The ones I'd seen on the beds weren't big either, but I thought it might be worth putting in a solid effort trying to find them. I went to some of those same areas that'd been productive (in 2002) and found some. There were a few 3 1/2- and 4-pounders, but just not a lot of them."

He focused on a fairly large general area toward the south end that consisted of several flats and pockets.

"It seemed like a wave of spawners had come up earlier, and what was left when our tournament rolled around were remnant fish. They were committed to staying up and all that cold weather didn't knock them back.

"I fished both the Texas and Louisiana sides, and I really had to cover some water and work to find each fish. I didn't feel like I had enough to win, but I thought I had a good shot at having a nice finish. And if I came across a couple of big females, I might be able to do better than that."

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 18-04
> Day 2: 5, 19-10
> Day 3: 5, 14-01
> Total = 15, 51-15

The tournament was scheduled to begin last Thursday, but the forecast for powerful winds caused officials to push the opener back to Friday and shorten the event to 2 days. Niggemeyer thinks that played to his advantage.

"That gave those bed-fish another day to snap back after the cold weather," he said. "Water that had been in the low- to mid-50s warmed up to the mid- to high-50s and even into the 60s on the first day of the tournament."

When Friday finally arrived, he went to the area where he'd found the most spawners during practice.

"Some of them weren't there, but new ones were," he said. "There weren't that many, but they were ones I hadn't seen before. That kind of clued me that this could get better and better.

"Without the cancellation, those guys who were throwing lipless crankbaits and spinnerbaits in the drains might've had a better shot at winning than I did,"

He caught seven keepers that first day and the biggest was a 5-pounder. He said he worked some for 30 minutes or more before getting them to commit.

He started day 2 on a big female (5 or 6 pounds) he'd seen the previous day, but she proved to be too spooky.

"Every time I showed up to the bed she'd just scram. I might get one pitch on her, but that would be it."

He went back to the area that had produced the day before, figuring he'd catch a limit first and then worry about size later. But a big dose of quality had shown up overnight in the form of an 8-pounder that was fixing to do business with a 13-inch buck.

Strike King

The Strike King Ocho was one of two primary baits Niggemeyer used to entice the spawning fish.

"I knew that fish could make all the difference, and it took me an hour to catch it."

That fish pushed him into a tie with Pringle and brought them both back to fish the next morning. There was one unfavorable aspect to the extra session, though – it was a cloudy morning, and he thought the gray skies might hinder his ability to spot fish, while at the same time making Pringle's fish more willing to chase baits.

He went back to a place where he'd left an unwilling 5-pounder the day before, but she was gone.

"At that point I felt that everything from practice was burned out and I had to find new fish. So I expanded and moved to areas I hadn't scouted. I pulled around a corner and looked down a stretch, and caught one there. Then I went to another stretch and filled out my limit.

"Each fish took me 15 to 30 minutes to catch, and I was continually looking at my watch."

His fifth bite came just 10 minutes before he had to begin the 23-minute run back to the launch. He had no idea whether he'd caught enough to win, but thought he'd capitalized on what was available to him.

"I felt I'd fished as well as I possibly could in that short timeframe. I was happy with my performance, but Jerrel's won a bunch of money in Texas and with the overcast and wind, I figured it would really be a shootout.

"I thought he had at least as good of a chance as I did. But it turned out I'd underestimated my fish, which I'm prone to doing. I thought I only had about 12 pounds."

Winning Gear Notes

Niggemeyer threw numerous plastic baits in a wide variety of colors to try to entice the spawning fish. His primary offerings were a Strike King Ocho soft stickbait and a Strike King Rage Tail Baby Craw.

"I was just going from one fish to the next, asking, 'Who are you today? Who am I dealing with?' I just kept trying different colors – everything from bright to natural – and sometimes different baits until something worked."

> Sight-fishing gear – 7' heavy-action St. Croix Legend Tournament Slop-N-Frog rod, Ardent XS 1000 casting reel (6.3:1 gear ratio), 20- or 25-pound unnamed copolymer line, 1/4- or 5/16-ounce unnamed tungsten weight, unnamed 4/0 hook, Strike King Ocho soft stickbait or Strike King Rage Tail Baby Craw (various colors).

The Bottom Line

Main factor in his success – "Just being able to find stretches of water with fish on them. Especially on the last day, I fished water that I hadn't practiced on at all."

Performance edge – "The Strike King Twilight sunglasses with yellow/amber lenses were a tremendous help under lowlight conditions. Also, I got a Power-Pole this year, and I could get upwind of the fish, drop the Power-Pole and use the boat to slick off the water right in front of me. That allowed me to pitch right out front with no slack in the line."
