Go ahead and call the FLW Tour field a bunch of pigs. They won't mind. A lot of 'em are rolling around in the mud and loving it.

Beaver Lake in Arkansas is high and muddy, so for the first time in a long time here, the field's able to ditch their little sticks, turn up the trolling motor, and power down the bank. The result has been higher-than-normal Beaver weights.

Not everyone's fishing the mud – a significant portion of the field's in the small areas of clear water – but who's leading is all about who's fishing the stain.

Texas pro Mark Pack, who's running a power pattern in the mud, is currently the leader after day 1 with 14-13.

Immediately behind him, in a tie for 2nd, is fellow Texan Jason Reyes and Joel Richardson (North Carolina) with 14 pounds even. Reyes finesse-fished this morning, but made a late stop in the mud and improved by 3 1/2 pounds in the final 30 minutes. Richardson's sharing water with Pack – a situation the two discussed and agreed upon during practice.

The 4th-place spot belongs to hometowner and relative newcomer Greg Bohannan. He caught 13-12 today in this, his fifth Tour event.

And Oklahoma's Sam Newby rounds out the Top 5 with 13-07 worth of stained-water fish..

The full field fishes tomorrow, after which the field cuts to 10 for the final 2 days. Those 10 anglers have their weights zeroed, so days 1 and 2 are defined by the race to the cut. Below is a look at the Top 20. For the 11th- through 20th place anglers, distance behind the cut is noted in red.

1. Mark Pack -- 14-13
2. Jason Reyes -- 14-00
2. Joel Richardson -- 14-00
4. Greg Bohannan -- 13-12
5. Sam Newby -- 13-07
6. Dan Morehead -- 13-03
7. Dion Hibdon -- 13-01
7. Bryan Thrift -- 13-01
9. Shinichi Fukae -- 12-12
9. Alvin Shaw -- 12-12
11. Mike Lanier -- 12-10 (0-02)
12. Kyle Mabrey -- 12-06 (0-06)
13. Rob Digh -- 12-03 (0-09)
13. Mike Surman -- 12-03 (0-09)
15. Greg Pugh -- 12-02 (0-10)
16. Matt Arey -- 12-01 (0-11)
17. Jason Christie -- 11-15 (0-13)
17. Larry Nixon -- 11-15 (0-13)
19. Keith Williams -- 11-14 (0-14)
20. Chad Grigsby -- 11-13 (0-15)

Clearly, the weights are extremely close, which should set up for major movement tomorrow. Chad Grigsby, in 20th, is less than a pound out of the cut, and with 3- and 4-pound largemouths biting, anybody could climb 60 spots or more with a few of the right bites.

While the dirty water bite definitely dominates the very top of the board, some quality clear-water fish are bring caught down by the dam.

The biggest wildcard at this point is the weather. Today delivered heavy rains and clouds. Clearing is expected tomorrow, as post-frontal conditions set in. Then, clear skies and significant warming is expected to better the bit the final 2 days.

However, tomorrow's post-frontal conditions should present a challenge. While the sun might position the fish better for the power-fishermen, it might shrink the strike window at the same time.

In general, weights should drop at least 1 pound across the board tomorrow, which would put the cut at about 24 pounds and change, but it could be as little as 23 pounds.

Pack on a Winner?

Pack was straightforward. He thinks he's on the winning pattern. And it's just like a pattern he ran here years ago, when the water was high. That time, he had a genuine shot at winning, but lost key fish the final day.

"Whoever's on this pattern is going to win it," he said. "I know (Richardson) and one other guy whom I don't know are on it. This is it – this is the one."

Jason Reyes spent the bulk of the day finesse-fishing, then upgraded big-time in the final 30 minutes.

He noted he caught about 60 fish today, and threw back several 10-pound limits. He worked a total of seven different areas that were holding fish and shad.

He owns Lake Fork Tackle, and one of his key baits was his new prototype Hyper worm.

"I've made three Top 10s here and I'm running a pattern I've done well on in the past," he added. "I'm in the muddiest water you can find. You can't see down an inch. I just got the prototype molds for the Hyper worm last week, and it's real thumpin' worm. It moves a lot of water."

About when he discovered the pattern, he said: "I knew the first day of practice it was the winning pattern. I had 18 pounds in about 3 hours, and two (of those fish) were 5-pound smallmouths. I only practiced 2 days, and I found my stuff in a day and a half.

"I went from one end of the lake to the other trying to find it. It's on key stuff. Today they didn't bite as well, but if it's real sunny, it's going to be on. And if it's sunny and hot, the fishing will be crazy."

2nd: Reyes Rallied Late

Like most of the field, Reyes made his way back to the launch with a me-too limit of about 10 pounds. But on the way in, he stopped at a spot where he'd got some bites in practice and walloped a 4-pounder, then a 2 1/2 in the final 30 minutes. That got him 3 1/2 pounds on the cull, and he ended the day with 14 pounds even.

About his day, he said: "It was good. I made a few adjustments there at the end of the day and caught a couple key fish that really helped me out. That made a big difference. I'm excited, big-time."

He found that upgrade spot on the final day of practice, and he's got a bunch of other spots just like it close to the launch. Other than that, he spent the day finesse-fishing in clear water. He landed his limit-fish at about 9:30, which he said freed him up to move around and try to upgrade.

He plans to do the same thing tomorrow – start in clear water in search of a limit, then finish up trying for a big largemouth or two in the stain. He described the morning plan as a "numbers game, where (you) try to grind it out and cull up a little bit."

He's currently 100th in the FLW Tour points. About what it would mean for him to make the cut this week, he said: "It would mean a lot, I'd get back in the points race to where I really want to be as far as making the FLW Cup."

Joel Richardson says he and Pack found the same fish, and made a deal to work together.

2nd: Richardson Weighed Variety

For Richardson, day 1 at Beaver was like a biology lesson. His 14-pound bag contained a largemouth, a smallmouth, a spotted bass and a meanmouth, which is a smallie-spot hybrid. They were all about the same size.

They didn't all come from the same spot – he's running a couple different patterns, he said. His co-angler likewise had a strong day at 11 pounds.

About the day, Richardson said: "I caught a lot of fish off several small spots. I've got quite a few of those spots, and I'm pretty much just fishing a spinnerbait around flooded trees. I also caught a few on a shallow crankbait around the same cover. I'm in the dirtiest water you can find in this lake."

As noted, he's working some of the same fish as leader Pack, and the situation's been cooperative. Here's what Richardson said about the arrangement.

"A few of the spots I didn't go to are the one's Mark Pack's leading on. We saw each other a few times, and I've been talking to him for a few days. I told him I wouldn't bother him on a few places he's starting on.

"A few people have asked whether we think we'll wear out the fish. I don't think so. There's quite a few fish there. We just need to catch them."

5th: Newby Untangled Big One

Newby's also fishing stained water. He had a "pretty good practice," but noted he wasn't sure how good because he shook most of his bites off. So he was stoked to catch 13-07 today, but it wasn't a total surprise.

He started off the day with a limit of spots, then went to upgrading. He culled up to about 8 pounds, all spots, then switched areas and replaced everything in his well with largemouths in an hour and a half.

His biggest fish, a 4-13, took a little coaxing. "It got hung on a log," he said. "It took forever to get to. I finally got to it, and that was the one that got me over the hump."

About his attack plan, he said: "The fish are kind of random here. It's real random. But it seems like whenever you find a patch of fish, there's a bunch of them.

"I've got a couple of areas that may have gotten hammered on – I don't know, I've seen quite a few people fishing them. But they're not fishing exactly like I am, so I feel I can go behind somebody and catch them.

Sam Newby didn't even put his finesse rods in the boat.

"I'm riding it," he added, meaning that he doesn't plan to change tomorrow. "This is the first time I've got to fish like I really want to at Beaver. I left my finesse (rods) at the house."

7th: Dad Helped Dion

Father/son duo Guido and Dion Hibdon work together at every event, and this time around, it was Guido who clued Dion in.

The tip helped Dion but not necessarily Guido. Dion caught 13-01 today, which puts him 7th, while Guido lingers at 109th with 7-13.

"I'm tickled, really," Dion said of his position. "Dad kind of figured out where those good largemouths got to. We've been kind of thinking all along that maybe they hadn't spawned yet, and the last couple days of practice, he kind of figured out where they were staying.

"We're fishing in muddy water, so you can't see them, but we figured out what kinds of places they were on."

Dion didn't start with the largemouth bite, though. He began with spotted bass, then switched to largemouths and caught two 4-pounders, which he said was lucky. "It was nothing fast, nothing extra – just grinding them out.

"As far as tomorrow, I know the kinds of places to fish," he added. "Do I have a spot to start? Not necessarily, unless I go and start on spotted bass. But for largemouths, it's just one of those deals where I'll go in and fish the right kind of water and hopefully come up with some.

"The cool thing about it is, both of the big fish I caught today were in the exact same kind of spot. So the pattern is pretty much perfect for that."

About how close he thinks the fish are to spawning, he noted: "They're kind of pre-spawn, maybe trying to spawn a little bit. I'm not too sure they're not starting to do it. The water around here's just now getting to 60 degrees. That's cold, and here in the Ozarks, they'll wait until the next dang moon if they have to. I think that's what's happening."

24th: Dudley Could Swing Other Way

David Dudley's one of 19 pros in the 11-pound percentile. With 11-09, he sits just 1-03 in back of the cut. So one good bite tomorrow, coupled with a decent four fish, could put him in.

"All you can do is put yourself in striking distance," he said. "That's where I am. I'd rather be to where I'm not striking – I'd rather be ahead with some cushion – but I feel better about it because today all I did was go and practice.

"I fished areas I didn't even go to in practice. I knew what I was catching in practice wasn't good enough, after listening to people talk."

He's fishing dirty water and knows how quickly things could change tomorrow. "Those 12- or 13-pound bags – I could swing that way tomorrow, because Beaver's all about getting that 3 1/2- or 4-pounder. There are many in here to be had, but I need to go get a couple and make it happen. I'm throwing a bait that can catch a big one, so I feel okay."

32nd: Wendlandt Going 'Fishing'

Beaver-killer Clark Wendlandt, who's won here twice, noted he "messed around" a little too long this morning, and likely missed his key largemouth window in the dirty water. He weighed 11-01 and is currently 32nd.

He noted he feels "pretty good" about his catch, but "not great."

"It's supposed to be sunny tomorrow," he said. "If so, I think the weights will fall off. We've had that happen a lot of times. The weights will drop a ton I think.

"I think I've got a chance to catch a good stringer, but I've also got the chance to catch just 8 or 9 pounds too," he added. "I'll just go fishing and see what happens."

Notable

> Day 1 stats – 200 anglers, 157 limits, 15 fours, 11 threes, 12 twos, 1 one, 4 zeroes.

> The "Norman Incident" is still a hot topic on the tour. FLW Outdoors officials addressed the field about their decision not to DQ Greg Pugh at the prior event during the pre-tournament meeting.

> Pugh remains red-hot. After two consecutive cuts, he's 15th here with 12-02.

> Points leader Andy Morgan is 44th with 10-09. "I caught them on a War Eagle spinnerbait – that's how you catch them here at Beaver," he said. "I lost a pretty good one. I just went down the bank with a spinnerbait."

> Beaver may hold a special place in the heart of Wesley Strader – he made his first cut here back in 2002 – but it wasn't overly kind to him today. He's 72nd with 9-02.

> Jim Moynagh struggled today and tanked just three fish for 5-02, which puts him 170th. "I've got a few ideas I'm going to try tomorrow," he said. "It'll be a little different from how I fished today. It was tough. I had some other fish hooked up that would have counted. They got away."

> Count veteran Tommy Martin as disappointed. His two-fish, 3-02 sack puts him 186th. "It was quite a surprise to me," he noted. "I'd been catching quite a few fish in practice, but they didn't bite today. It was one of those awful days. I lost some fish, and didn't get nearly the bites I'd been getting."
