The word from Del Rio, Texas is that Amistad fished like a much different lake today compared to yesterday, and a quick glance at the leaderboard confirms that fact.

The Top 12 shifted like a California fault line on day 2. First-day leader Kurt Dove weighed in less than half the weight he brought to the scales on day 1 and plummeted 10 spots to 11th. South Carolina pro Jason Williamson, on the other hand, sacked 29-13 to move from 10th into 1st.

Clark Reehm weighed 25-12 and that was good enough to slide him up one spot into 2nd. He switched places with Mike McClelland, who dropped from 2nd to 3rd with his 23-14 day 2 limit.

Kevin Short was another big mover today. He turned in the day's best limit at 31-06 to leapfrog 15 places from his day 1 finish at 18th into a tie with McClelland for 3rd with a 2-day total of 53-03. Short is one of four pros who came from outside the Top 12 to make the final-day cut in this weather-shortened event. Greg Hackney, Todd Faircloth and Kotaro Kiriyama are the other three.

Here's a look at the Top 12 who made the cut to fish tomorrow. Total weight is followed by distance from leader in red.

1. Jason Williamson: 55-12
2. Clark Reehm: 54-10 (1-02)
3. Mike McClelland: 53-03 (2-09)
3. Kevin Short: 53-03 (2-09)
5. Edwin Evers: 50-02 (5-10)
6. Billy Brewer: 49-13 (5-15)
7. Greg Hackney: 48-09 (7-03)
8. Gary Klein: 48-00 (7-12)
9. Todd Faircloth: 47-01 (8-11)
10. Kotaro Kiriyama: 45-05 (10-07)
11. Kurt Dove: 44-10 (11-02)
11. Denny Brauer: 44-10 (11-02)

A big reason for the shake-up today can be credited to the late-season cool front that made its way through the region late yesterday. The front didn't drop air or water temperatures by any significant degree, but it did usher in a bubble of high pressure that's now hovering over Del Rio and the rest of the Lone Star State.

Several pros sang sad songs about how their day 1 bite vanished, and the weights were down significantly across the board. But a small percentage of anglers managed to stay consistent in the tough post-frontal conditions, while an even smaller percentage - only three of the Top 12 - somehow found a way to improve on their day 1 weights under the bluebird skies.

A clear-cut pattern has yet to emerge as head and shoulders above the rest. Anglers reported having success on everything from dropshots to jigs to swimbaits at the day 2 weigh-in. Like last week's tournament at Falcon, this is largely a post-spawn event, and the deeper bite seems to be paying bigger dividends for the anglers willing to stick with it, but it's certainly not the only thing producing at Amistad.

Williamson Wants Wind

Jason Williamson was one of the few anglers who managed to improve his weight from day 1. He tanked 29-13 today and thinks he can do better tomorrow as long as the wind cooperates.

"When it's sunny and calm my fish don't bite, and that's just the truth," he said about his pattern. "If the wind blows or it's cloudy, they'll bite. I feel like I've got a great shot (at winning) if I can get a little cloud cover or some wind. If I can get some of both, that would be great."

His weigh fish are the products of two different bites - one of which is related to a spot, while the other is tied in to a larger pattern.

"I'm throwing a Senko early in the morning in a little ditch that I've found," he said. "That spot just has a ton of fish in it. Every day I've been fortunate enough to get one or two good ones out of there.

"Once 10 o'clock rolls around I'm running a pattern with a swimbait," he added. "I'm throwing a Buckeye Lures J-Will swimbait jighead with a Berkley PowerBait Hollow Belly swimbait on it. I'm just reeling that swimbait through deep timber."

He said he plans to make a milk run tomorrow of the same spots he's hit the last 2 days, but if he gets in trouble, he's got new water he can work as well.

"I feel like I've got that swimbait bite keyed in. When you're out there throwing a swimbait for 7 hours, you've always got a chance at a big bag. We'll see what happens."

Clark Reehm says he's fishing the same spot where he clinched his Bassmaster Classic berth at the Amistad Central Open last year.

2nd: Reehm's "Rotting"

Elite Series rookie Clark Reehm stepped up one spot in the standings to 2nd on day 2, and he sits just 1-02 behind Williamson heading into the final day. Reehm's got some fond memories of Amistad. He placed 18th here in the 3rd and final BASS Central Open event of 2007, which punched his ticket to the 2008 Classic and qualified him for the Elite Series.

"I'm fishing the same spot where I made the Classic from," he said. "It's a channel swing that comes up against a point and it's near some good spawning areas. It's got hardwood trees at the bottom of the point, some bushes up top and some grass off the far end."

He's a self-described "15-pounds type of fisherman" and he'll tell you that his fishing style isn't suited to the heavyweight events that constitute most of the Elite Series schedule. But he's obviously onto something much bigger than that at Amistad.

"I've made my living fishing fast and throwing a Lucky Craft crankbait," he said. "And it's killing me to do what I'm doing out there right now."

What's he's doing is fishing about as slow as he can stand to, or as he put it: "I'm rotting out there.

"I'm slowing way down and I hate to do that, but I know there's some big fish in this area. I've never rotted on a point that long in my life, but it's working, so I'm going to stick with it."

He plans to head back to the same point to rot some more tomorrow and feels his area has good reloading potential, but he's a little unsure about the quality.

"I could catch 12 pounds just as easily as I could catch 30," he said. "This spot definitely has the potential to crank out big fish, but you never know. I've got some stuff in Mexico that I haven't even used yet, but I'm not going that way unless I have to."

3rd: McClelland Comfortable

Mike McClelland's day-2 limit was roughly 6 pounds lighter than what he weighed yesterday. He said day 1 and day 2 were almost carbon copies of each other in terms of how he fished and the number of bites he got. The big bites simply eluded him today.

"I started in the same spot as I did yesterday and I caught them early again," he said. "I think I caught four of my better fish in the first 30 minutes. I got three on a swimbait, one on a Carolina rig, and I finished my limit with my new Spro prototype stickbait."

His weight loss today doesn't concern him heading into the finals.

"I feel confident I can get at least that (weight) or even more tomorrow," he said. "The biggest thing for me is that I'm fishing in a way that I'm really comfortable with. I can keep at it all day and feel good about it."

He added: "I'm going to go out and throw that big Osprey swimbait for the first 2 hours tomorrow, and as long as I get some big ones on it I'll probably keep it in my hand most of the day."

Kevin Short says he had to make multiple casts to the same area to coax his bites on day 2.

3rd (tie): Slow = Success for Short

If there was a most-improved performance award, Kevin Short would have been the leading candidate for that title today. He bettered his day 1 sack by 10 pounds and his 31-06 day-2 limit is the heaviest of the tournament thus far.

A slower approach made all the difference for him on day 2.

"I slowed down - like really, really, really slow," he said. "Actually, my presentation is fast, but I'm really working over my areas. I have to make six or eight casts to the same area just to get a bite, but when one bites it - it's worth the wait."

His practice led him to believe that 20 pounds was the upper limit of what his spots were capable of producing, but his eyes were opened yesterday.

"I caught one over 7 pounds yesterday and that surprised me," he said. "I figured 20 pounds a day would be pretty easy for me to get, but I didn't realize the quality that was in my area until yesterday.

"I really think I can catch another big bag tomorrow," he added. "Today I had one that was over 8 pounds. I'm not even sure I've scratched the surface."

About the phase his fish are in, he said: "It's one big, happy mess out there. I'm catching fish that are post-spawn, some are spawning and I'm not even sure that some of them aren't pre-spawn. I've got it all going on. One thing's for sure, I definitely don't feel like I'm going to run out of fish. I've got them coming and going."

8th: Klein on the Move

A tight-lipped Gary Klein cleverly side-stepped the question of how deep he's been finding his fish and what's worked for him the last 2 days at Amistad.

"What I'm doing is no secret," he said. "I'm just fishing my rear off."

He noted that this lake isn't fishing the same way it has for him in years past, and the key to his success is covering as much water as he can look at in a day.

"I'm hitting every single spot I know," he said. "In previous years I could pull up in a spot and really work it for a long time - a couple hours. This year I can't do that. Some of the real key stuff I’m fishing is only giving up one bite. I'm pulling up to my areas and trying to make one or two key casts on it and then I move on."

Additional Notes

  • Ish Monroe (14th): "I only caught three on a swimbait today. Yesterday I had 25 to 30 followers. Today I only had five or six. That cold front did something to the pressure and it really slowed the bite down."

  • Alton Jones (16th): "The fish really changed for me today, too. I figured them out about mid-morning. The things I did yesterday didn't work at all. There's a whole new wave of fish starting to move up right now. Whether I make the cut or not, I'm going fishing tomorrow. This is that kind of lake."

  • Mike Iaconelli (17th): "I figured them out. I really think I just needed another practice day. One of the things that haunts you is your history. I tried to fish a whole practice day like I did last year, and that's the worst thing you can do. You can't fish your history. I've been catching them out a lot deeper than I've ever fished here. My big one came out of 60 feet of water today."

  • Derek Remitz (30th): "I really haven't been on anything that good all week. I just made too many bad decisions this week. I had my thoughts crossing - 'Do I want to throw a swimbait, or do I want to go out deep?' Mistakes and bad decisions cost me. Hopefully this is enough to make a check and get on to the next one.

  • Kevin VanDam (56th): I kind of missed the pattern. Even today I was really struggling. I figured something out in the last hour, but I didn't have enough time to capitalize on it."

  • Byron Velvick (61st): "The swimbait bite went downhill today and I went downhill with it. I also got stuck on a real big bed fish. That took 2 hours of my day. I got on that bedfish and stayed on it and just couldn't get it to bite."

  • Aaron Martens (72nd): "I wasted 5 hours on bedfish yesterday. I didn't even go look at those today. I just went fishing. I caught most of them on a dropshot and some on a swimbait."

  • Tommy Biffle (74th): "I did something I usually don't do - I fished the entire tournament out deep. I got on the biggest bunch of big fish I've ever been on during practice. I don't know if the north wind did something or what, but they went away."

  • Chris Lane (88th): "This is the third tournament in a row I've had without making a check. I need to tighten up."

    Notable

    > Day 2 stats: 109 anglers, 107 limits, 1 four, 1 one.

    > It appears all the record talk wasn't left at Falcon. Since this tournament was shortened to 3 days, that leaves Byron Velvick's 83-05 3-day catch record vulnerable to be taken down. Realistically, all of the Top 3 anglers have a shot at topping that mark tomorrow.
