Winning a tour-level bass tournament is big. Actually, that's an understatement. Winning a tour-level event is huge. Pros often talk about how you can't progress to that elusive "next level" in your career until you've got a 1st-place on the résumé.

Most pros would be happy if they could find a way to squeak out a win once every season, and two in the same year is a feat very few have accomplished. Two in a row - that's something special.

Brett Hite's back-to-back wins are special, no doubt. But what puts them into the category of unbelievable is the fact that they occurred nearly 3,000 miles apart. The first win came a few weeks ago at Florida's Lake Toho. The Arizona pro didn't just win that one, he owned it. His 20-pound margin of victory, a new FLW Outdoors record, won't likely be eclipsed anytime soon.

After smashing them in Florida, Hite hopped in his Coppertone-wrapped Suburban and headed west to his home in Phoenix to rest for a day, and then logged a 12-hour haul to the FLW Series tournament at the California Delta. The wear and tear of the drive alone would have stacked the odds against most guys. Combine that with all the distraction and hoopla that can cloud an angler's mind after a win and Hite's chances looked pretty slim.

But when all was said and done at the Delta, it was Hite who was hoisting the trophy - again.

Here are the details of his second consecutive win.

Practice

Hite started his practice on the Delta in the well-known Frank's Tract area, but he didn't like what he saw.

"I got a few decent bites in there, but there was no grass in that area," he said. "After coming from Florida I had grass on the brain."

He didn't find much the first half of the day and was "dead tired" by the time the afternoon had rolled around.

"I was just exhausted from the high of winning and a 3100-mile drive," he said. "I called a buddy who has a house on the south end of the Delta, because I was thinking about dropping in there for a couple hours to take a nap.

"I was idling up to his house and I remembered a few areas I'd fished in a BASS Western Open back in 2005. I went south the next day and clobbered 'em. I had about a 30-pound stringer."

Feeling good with the bite he'd found on the southern end, he decided to give Frank's Tract one more look on the third day of practice, but arrived to find a flotilla of boats beating the area to death.

"It was covered up with boats," he said. "I found some fish, but I also found a lot of people. I knew then that I was going to spend my last day of practice back down south and try to expand my pattern and learn my areas better."

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 28-06
> Day 2: 5, 22-12-08
> Day 3: 5, 28-00 (15, 79-02)
> Day 4: 5, 27-09 (20, 106-11)

Hite crept up the standings a little each day. He ended the first day in 6th, slipped into the 3rd on day 2, sacked 28 pounds to move into 2nd on day 3, and weighed the best sack of the final day at 27-09 to seal the deal.

"Everyday I just kept catching solid fish," he said. "My confidence was through the roof. A lot of times in a tournament you have little reasons to second guess yourself, but in this tournament I had one plan and I knew it was productive. I knew exactly what I needed to do everyday, and that really helped me stay focused."

All but a few of his fish came from one specific area: a 100-yard wide canal about 30 minutes south of the launch. "I'd go down this one stretch and every day I'd have at least 20 pounds in my boat before 11 o'clock," he said.

He caught all his weigh fish on the exact same chatterbait-style jig he whacked them on at Toho.

"It was 100-percent identical," he noted. "The bait, the rod, the reel, the line - even the color of the bait. It was kind of funny driving all the way across the country and catching fish on the exact same bait. The just tells you that bass are bass, no matter where you go."

Hite said the idea of winning two tournaments back-to-back didn't really sink in until day 3 at the Delta.

Winning Pattern Notes

Hite spent the vast majority of his time in a single canal in the southern portion of the California Delta. He described the canal as 3- to 4-miles long and roughly 100-yards wide.

"What made it special was this tule berm that ran right down the middle of it," he said. "Up close to the tules it's just a couple feet deep, then it slopes out to about 4-feet deep, and at the edge of the berm it drops straight off to about 8 or 9 (feet).

"It was just a classic deep-to-shallow spot," he added. "It was a great place for fish to move up on, and it had great replenishing potential. It also had some of the best grass in the area. It's been cold on the Delta this year and a lot of the grass has died off. My spot had scattered tules and beautiful hydrilla and milfoil that was full of grass shrimp and all kinds of stuff. It was like its own little ecosystem."

He caught fish scattered up and down the tule bank, but found the greatest concentrations near ditches and depressions that ran through the tule berm across the canal.

"There were a few little places like that where I'd always get a few bites," he said. "They were just places where the current had made little troughs through the tules. You'd see little depressions or clear spots and you could tell the tide was funneling through there."

Speaking of tide, it played a critical role in his bite every day. He was able to catch fish during all stages of the tide, but found that a low incoming tide was the best for producing reaction strikes.

"The best thing about it was that the tide was getting lower and lower everyday, so each day of the tournament I had more and more confidence that I could catch them.

"When the tide was low, I'd start by working the outside grass line. As it started to rise, I'd start casting that Vibrator jig diagonally towards the grass. When it got high, I could catch fish on the inside grass line, right up next to the tules.

"It was an aggressive bite," he added. "I'd throw it out, make two cranks, and one would eat it."

Winning Gear Notes

> Swim-jig gear: 7'4" medium-heavy Performance Tackle B. Hite Special fiberglass rod, unnamed casting reel, 20-pound Sunline Sniper fluorocarbon, 5/8-ounce Phenix Vibrator jig (green-pumpkin, black blade).

> He tipped the jig with a Yamamoto Swimming Senko trailer (green-pumpkin).

> He caught a few fish flipping a Reaction Innovations 5-inch Boom Boom tube, but he put that rod down after the first day.

> About the flipping bite, he noted: "I caught a 7 and an 8 (flipping) in practice, but it's just hard to go from throwing that Vibrator jig nonstop to slowing down and flipping. It would have taken me all day to flip one time down that canal. I could go down it two or three times with the Vibrator jig. When I was flipping I had this little voice in the back of my head saying, 'I wonder if I should speed this up,' so I did."

The Bottom Line

  • Main factor in his success – "Fishing pressure. I didn't have any pressure in the area I was fishing. I was all by myself."

  • Performance edge – "It was three things. I think the Swimming Senko on the back of that Vibrator jig is important. I think it looks like a bluegill kicking along. The second thing is the Sunline fluorocarbon line. I tried fishing with braid and I didn't get a single bite. The third thing is the rod. That (fiberglass) rod I use has a soft tip with super backbone. You can hook them good, but you don't rip it out of their mouths."

    Notable

    > Hite's won $250,000 in the month of March.

    > About his theory on tidal waters, he said: "I always think the beginning of an incoming tide is the best - especially for reaction strikes. It stirs everything up and lifts everything up off the bottom. It gets the bait moving, and then the bass get going."

    > "Winning two in a row never really crossed my mind until day 3," he said. "My second fish on day 3 was an 8-pounder and I was thinking, 'This might actually happen.'"

    > He'd fished Clear Lake the day prior to this interview and caught a 5-fish limit that went over 40 pounds. "I had a 10-pounder, an 8-12, an 8-10, an 8-04 and a little 6-pounder. It was an awesome day."
