Take a look at the leaderboard after day 2 of the Toho Bassmaster Elite Series and you'd think the bite's all-out on. It is, provided the weather's there. But everything's expected to change tomorrow when big 20 mph winds roil the waters of the Kissimmee Chain in Florida.

That'll hurt a lot of the leaders, who made their gravy the past 2 days with bedfish.

Kelly Jordon had that gravy ladle in his hands. He caught another big sack of bedfish today – some he saw, some he didn't. His limit weighed 21-05 and brought his 2-day total to 44-03. That pushed him into the lead at the Toho Bassmaster Elite Series with 2 days left to fish.

Byron Velvick, who led day 1 with 25 pounds of bedfish, limped in with 11-06 today and slipped to 2nd, where he trails Jordon by almost 8 pounds.

Kevin VanDam, however, moved up five spots with a 17-11 limit of crankbait fish. His bag was anchored by an 8 1/2-pounder. He had to move locations today – he didn't get a bite in his day-1 area – but the fact that he could do that, and still catch almost 18 pounds, is significant.

Terry Scroggins, who used bedfish to land in 2nd place yesterday, also limped in. His 11-11 today was about half of what he weighed yesterday and he slipped to 4th. But his local knowledge, coupled with the fact that he's about 9 1/2 pounds in back of a bed-fisherman who might not have the bed-bite tomorrow, makes his current deficit seem much less.

Scott Rook's still hanging tough. He opened with 19-14, followed up with 13-12 today, and trails Jordon by 10-09. He's sharing a bedding area with 18th-place Jason Quinn, and the feeling is the big ones are there, but they've been worked over pretty hard – both by that duo, and local shiner boats.

Here's a look at the current Top 12. Total weight is followed by distance from leader in red.

1. Kelly Jordon: 44-03
2. Byron Velvick: 36-06 (7-13)
3. Kevin VanDam: 35-11 (8-08)
4. Terry Scroggins: 34-13 (9-06)
5. Scott Rook: 33-10 (10-09)
6. Kenyon Hill: 33-07 (10-12)
6. Bobby Lane: 33-07 (10-12)
8. Rick Morris: 32-13 (11-06)
9. Bill Lowen: 30-05 (13-14)
9. Mark Davis: 30-05 (13-14)
11. Zell Rowland: 29-14 (14-05)
12. Steve Kennedy: 29-11 (14-08)

Weather is certainly the biggest factor right now. Tomorrow's expected winds will not only make it difficult, but more likely impossible, to effectively fish the bedding areas. But it could also hurt the offshore anglers, since a 20 mph blow makes boat position an all-day battle.

Nearly everyone has noted that precise casting has been the key to their bites – whether to beds or grass mats, points and alleys – which is also why wind could spell doom for a lot of bites.

That means that an angler – say a Terry Scroggins or Bobby Lane – who's got some historic stuff protected by wind in tucked-away places, might only need 15 pounds tomorrow to be in strong position to win on Sunday.

The other factor in play is that the topwater bite might be developing as the water continues to warm. The pros are pretty mum on what's going on, but the fact that Zell Rowland's now within the Top 12 could point to a topwater development.

Some who had significantly tough days today include: Jeff Reynolds (4th to 15th), Dean Rojas (6th to 16th), Ray Sedgwick (12th to 20th), Brent Chapman (9th to 23rd), Jared Lintner (17th to 31st), and Bryan Hudgins (10th to 34th).

Byron Velvick said if the wind blows tomorrow, rather than fish, he'll go eat at Huddle House instead.

Significant climbers included: Kenyon Hill (15th to 6th), Rick Morris (21st to 8th), Mark Davis (42nd to 9th), and Rowland (28th to 11th).

The biggest mover, though, was rookie Jay Fuller, who whacked 22-08 and catapulted from 75th to 13th.

Jordon 'Fortunate'

Jordon noted his bed-fish had moved slightly overnight, but he relocated them quickly about 5 feet from where they'd been and caught his weight in the first 2 hours of fishing.

"I was real fortunate," he added. "I found a couple yesterday that I wasn't able to catch, and I caught them. I just pitched over in the general direction.

"It was a blast today," he added. "But it's such a potshot out there. To catch a great sack again today – I'm tickled to death. It's great to be in the state of Florida right now."

The big news about Jordon is he's got a 10-pounder spotted that he's going to first thing in the morning. If he gets that, he'll likely just need to scrounge around for some keepers to keep the wide lead.

"It's a huge bass," he said. "It might only weigh 8 pounds – they seem to weigh less than you'd think – but it's about as long as my leg. So yeah, I have that big one, but I'll be able to fish rain, wind, or shine. It doesn't matter. I know where it is. And I know where the fish are to win."

About the rest of the event, he said: "We've got 2 more days to go. That's a long ways off. I'm just happy to have (had) 2 good days. Whoever wins this is going to have to be versatile. I have some very strong deals I can go to when the sight-fishing bite goes dry.

"I know where they are – I just have to go get them now."

3rd: VanDam Helped By Big Bite

Take away VanDam's 8-10 toad he caught today, and things would look a whole lot different, but the fact that big (presumably post-spawn) fish are to the point where they'll bite a crank probably makes him the overall favorite right now.

He noted onstage that he's throwing his now-famous "sexy shad" – his custom color variation available on several Strike King cranks.

About his day, and his 17-11 limit, he said: "It was a struggle for me. I was pretty fortunate that I caught that one big fish. That really helped a lot. You just never know. The fish are moving around a lot in the area I'm fishing – when the wind changes direction they reposition for sure.

Kevin VanDam described today as a struggle, but his bag was saved by a big fish.

"They haven't been real easy to catch," he added. "You have to know right where they're sitting. The wind's supposed to blow tomorrow, so hopefully they'll bite a lot better. They might chase some lures. That's what I'm kind of hoping."

He's got a few other areas he'll "look at" tomorrow, to see if they're happening with the wind, but he still thinks he'll need around 20 pounds to be in the position he wants to be in.

"I haven't caught 20 yet, but there's a lot of big fish in this lake," he noted. "With those types of conditions tomorrow – I'm hoping some of the bigger ones are going to bite."

5th: Rook Sharing

Rook, who weighed 19-14 then 13-12 for a combined 33-10, is all the more stoked because his weight came after a "horrible" practice. He would have been happy to weigh a 6- or 8-pound limit, so to open with almost 20 pounds was monstrous.

The difference-maker was the females that moved into his areas late Wednesday.

He did weigh 6 pounds less today than he did yesterday, but he's hanging tough. He's subject to two dynamics though. He's fishing for bedding bass, so he could be a victim of the wind. He's also sharing water with Quinn, as noted above, so the fish might be getting thin.

"I tried to move around a little today," Rook noted. "I caught a 5-pounder and a keeper in the same area I caught them in yesterday, then I moved over about 100 yards and found another little group of fish and started catching them pretty good. But I'm sharing that area with Jason Quinn, so I don't know how may are left.

"There's one spot where we caught them today, and we were watching a shiner fisherman in there yesterday that caught a 10, an 8, a 5, and had his line broke twice. So the big ones are there. I just have to catch them."

He's not sight-fishing per se. He caught a few fish looking, but he's largely just swimming a worm in the area.

About tomorrow's wind, he said: "It just depends on what it does. Yesterday it was slick and I had two fish at about noon. Then we got a little wind and clouds, and I caught 10 keepers after that.

"I'm just going to try to catch them one at a time," he added. "I talked with (Jordon) and he said he doesn't know if he can catch one tomorrow, so you really don't know. Everyone's subject to the same thing."

He also noted that it's been "great" to fish alongside Quinn. "He's right there with me, and we worked together back and forth to share the area. It's been a pleasure fishing with him, probably more so than anyone else I've shared water with like that."

9th: Davis Cranking

Mark Davis, like VanDam, is throwing a Strike King crank. He came into the event believing the sight-fish wouldn't last, and he'll probably know a lot more about that after tomorrow.

He weighed 20 pounds today – twice what he sacked yesterday – which launched him up the standings from 42nd to 9th.

Notable for BassFans who follow his career is that one of the reasons he returned to BASS was to fish like this – power techniques during the post-spawn for big fish. And so far so good. He logged a 14th last week at the Harris Chain, and is on his way to a Top 12 or better this week, provided his bite holds up.

"I feel good about it," Davis said of his 20 pounds. "It looks like things are starting to fall into place for me at this event. We're going to have a weather change tomorrow, and that could be very favorable for me. You really don't know until you get out there, but I think I've got it covered.

"The wind got a lot of us last week at the Harris Chain," he added. "Hopefully I've got an area here that'll hold up and I'll be able to fish effectively with the wind tomorrow."

Also notable is he's got a full plate of responsibility alongside his tour commitments. He's president of the PAA, and the PAA-sanctioned Toyota Texas Bass Classic is just 4 weeks away.

About where is he mentally with his fishing, he said: "Honestly, I'm not totally up to par. I don't know if I want to call it rust, but I don't feel like I'm 100% focused. I feel like I could be doing a lot better, but I'm holding my own. I'll just keep trying to improve as the year continues."

Additional Notes

  • Byron Velvick (2nd): "They're not as big as yesterday. I really disappointed myself and (my fiancé) Mary and probably anybody who thought I could catch them. I saw some big ones, but couldn't get them to go, I tried sight-fishing most of the day. If I can get them to go, I'll catch another 25 pounds. There are some boats beating them up pretty hard. The fish are weird now – sketched out. There's fish moving around, it's just hard to see them. What am I going to do if the wind blows? The second plan is to go to Huddle House."

  • Terry Scroggins (4th): "At 11:30 I didn't have a fish. I stayed in Toho looking for one, couldn't find one, then went to the very bottom of Kissimmee, then to Tiger, then to Cypress. My partner got to see the whole chain today. I thought I could catch 15 pounds, but I only got to fish half a day. I spent half the day looking and riding."

  • Bobby Lane (tied for 6th): "I caught my biggest fish yesterday sight-fishing. The guys who are sight-fishing are definitely showing there's big fish on beds. But I just went fishing today and had a great time. I missed a few opportunities and I'm looking forward to tomorrow."

  • Kenyon Hill (tied for 6th, caught a 10-03 today): "It was a great day. I found my (big) fish yesterday on a bed. I was making some casts in some thick grass, looked down, and there was a submarine. (She) was getting pretty active yesterday, but I left. I started there in the morning and caught her in about 45 minutes."

  • Rick Morris (8th, caught a 9-03 today): "I didn't have a lot of bites today. I've just been fishing conservative all week. I'm keeping my RPM flipping rod wet and (keeping) a piece of plastic on cover all day. I had four giant bites and got two of them to the boat. These Florida bass are mean fish, so if you get half in you're doing something. The wind's going to blow tomorrow, and it's going to destroy my water. I'll have to go find new water."

  • Mike Iaconelli (32nd): "My stuff's holding up. I found one of those spots out in the middle of nowhere. I have a deep weed-edge with one little spot on it – some shell mixed with grass."

    Notable

    > Day 2 stats – 109 anglers, 93 limits (11 more than yesterday), 7 fours, 6 threes, 2 twos, 1 one, no zeroes (same as yesterday).

    > Jordon on fishing in Florida: "For me, it's crazy. This place is almost Lake Okeechobee (where he's won), so I'm feeling pretty close to home. I love Okeechobee. When that place is right, it's one of the finest places to fish in the planet. These lakes feed into it and they're pretty similar. They can be really bad, but so can Lake Fork where I live. But man, when they're good, they're good. It's just amazing how many big ones there are swimming around. The weather's awesome, 80 degrees, and it's just cool being here."
