Go south and go large – that's what the Champlain FLW Tour is all about for Dion Hibdon.

His long run to the southern end of the lake, where the big largemouths live, resulted in the top bag for the second straight day. He caught 19-11 and led the cut with a 2-day total of 40-11.

The Missouri veteran also secured his goal of a Top 10, which might put him in the FLW Tour Championship (FLWTC) for the first time since 2003. He came in at No. 75 in the Angler of the Year (AOY) race, and only the Top 48 qualify.

He was exactly 5 pounds in front of 2nd-place Scott Dobson of Michigan (18-00 today, 35-11 total). Thomas LaVictoire of Vermont moved up to 3rd with 35-09 (17-13 today) and 2004 winner Scott Martin of Florida dropped one spot to 4th with 34-09 (15-12 today). Virginia's Curt Lytle caught 16-04 today and rounded out the Top 5 with 34-08 total.

Here's the lower half of the Top 10:

6. Keith Williams: 34-06
7. Tracy Adams: 34-03
8. Kevin Vida: 34-01
9. Jerry Williams: 33-07
10. Shinichi Fukae: 33-05

Like Hibdon, South Carolina's Anthony Gagliardi achieved his pre-tournament objective: He locked up the AOY title with a 44th-place finish (29-13). Three anglers were within 40 points of him coming in, but none were closer than 35.

Alabama's Matt Herren, who ended up 31st (30-14), was the only member of that trio who gained any ground. But with Gagliardi's final placement, Herren needed to finish no lower than 9th to catch him.

There wasn't a tremendous amount of movement at the top of the leaderboard today. Among the Top 10, only Dobson, LaVictoire and Adams caught bigger bags than yesterday, and LaVictoire's was just one ounce heavier.

Georgia's Tony Couch, California's R.J. Bennett and Florida's J.T. Kenney took big plunges. Couch went from 2nd to 26th with 11-14 today (31-02 total), Bennett dropped from 4th to 38th with 11-13 (30-07) and Kenney fell from 6th to 32nd with 12-10 (30-13).

Those relying on a sight-bite were hindered by overcast skies and a south wind that blew 15 to 20 mph at times. The wind also made for a rougher ride for those who went far down the lake to the largemouth holes.

Conditions should be better for either option tomorrow. The Weather Channel predicts mostly cloudy skies in the Plattsburgh, N.Y. area, with a high temperature of 73 degrees and a north wind to 6 mph.

Weights for the Top 10 were zeroed after today's weigh-in, and the winner will be determined by highest combined total over the next 2 days.

Hibdon Hammers 'Em Again

Hibdon did pretty much the same stuff in the same places, and he ended up with another huge sack.

"Fishing-wise, it was just about the same as yesterday," he said. "The wind blew hard enough to mess things up a little and it limited the areas I could fish, but it didn't seem to bother the fish at all."

He got five bites within the first hour, and four of those ended up on the scales.

"I had those four and one little keeper, and I was kind of thinking I had it made, so I came back at about 11:00 trying to beat the weather," he said. "After I got back up here, I culled out the little one with a smallmouth."

He was pleased that he achieved his goal of a Top 10 – this will be his best finish of the year by at least 14 places – and gave himself a chance to make the FLWTC.

"It feels damn good," he said. "I knew what I needed to do, and that's what I practiced to do, and it panned out.

"Whether I get 190 points out of this or 200, I'll feel like I've done as good as I could. Now it's up to other guys to factor in and fall out (of the Top 48 in the points)."

Are there enough big, green fish left down there at Ticonderoga to carry him through the weekend?

"I don't know, we'll have to wait and see. I'm just tickled with what's happened so far. If it happens again, then it happens, and if I can win the tournament, that'd be great too. If not, then it wasn't meant to be."

Two quality afternoon bites pushed Scott Dobson into 2nd place.

2nd: Late Boost for Dobson

Dobson spent most of the day throwing a jerkbait, and that netted him a 14-pound limit. Then he went south to a spawning area that had produced for him on his previous visit.

"I think the exact same fish were in the exact same place," he said. "I caught a 4-pounder and one that weighed 3-07. It was just amazing to me that those fish hadn't gotten picked off.

"Because of the weather, they were terribly hard to see, but I got both of them on the first cast I made to them."

The bigger one actually weighed 4-02. "It was the biggest fish I've caught since I've been here."

He spent all 6 of his practice days in search of bedding smallmouths. He still has a few of those left and has found a few more over the past 2 days.

If things go right, he thinks he stands a chance to win.

"The big variable is that largemouth bite. If those guys keep getting down to those fish and keep catching them, they should do pretty well.

"I never practiced for largemouth at all. Smallmouth are my thing, and that's what I'm comfortable doing. I'd be happy if I can get 15 to 18 pounds a day the rest of the way, but that'll take some work."

3rd: LaVictoire Right at Home

LaVictoire (pronounced La-Victory) achieved his first tour-level Top 10.

"I feel honored to make it," he said. "I beat some of the best fishermen around to get here, and everything from here on is a bonus."

He's sight-fishing, but he's running low on targets.

"I have a few fish left, but they're getting scarce because I had to burn quite a few of my best ones to get here. Also, some of the others got picked off by other people."

The 30-year-old owner of a car dealership lives in nearby West Rutland, Vt. and fishes the lake an average of 70 days per year. He competes in a dozen or so tournaments here annually.

If sight-fishing is a total bust for him tomorrow, he'll head toward home (Ticonderoga). "I could go down there and flip for largemouth, but I'll probably stick with what got me here.

"I think 17 pounds would be a good goal. If I can push it a little higher than that, that'd be great."

4th: Martin Confident

Martin likes his chances of capturing his second straight win here.

"Everything's gone according to plan so far," he said. "I've got a lot of confidence in what I'm doing and I've got a plan to win this thing.

"If I can execute the second half of this ball game, I'll be the champ. I'm pretty hungry, and it's not for food."

He pursued bed-fish again, but today he couldn't see them due to the weather.

"It was very hard to bed-fish – just inches from impossible," he said. "I never saw a single fish I caught today. I have to line them up with my Garmin GPS, and fortunately it's very accurate."

He had a solid limit by 9:00 and started cruising around in search of beds. At about 2:00, he decided he should try to catch one more fish.

"I knew where there was a 3 1/2-pounder, and I went and caught it," he said. "The bad part was I couldn't see it bite, and I hooked it deep and it died on me.

"That one bumped on that was about 2-14, so with the (8-ounce dead fish) penalty, I came out where I would have been anyway. All I really did was waste a fish."

He has a specific goal weight in mind for tomorrow. "The number is 17. If I can get that the next 2 days or some combination that adds up (to 34), I think I can win."

5th: Smallie Helps Lytle

Lytle is focused exclusively on largemouths, but a nice bronzeback helped him today.

"I'm fishing shallow – mostly grass and some wood," he said. "I caught a smallmouth by accident, and it weighed 3-09. It culled a 3-pounder."

Like Hibdon, he's making a long southerly run.

"The largemouth down there are quality fish," he said. "It's just a question of being able to dial in on them quickly (because you don't get much fishing time)."

He said the lighter winds in the forecast for tomorrow should benefit both sight-anglers and those who head south.

"I'm definitely going to key on the largemouth first, but I might try for some smallmouth later."

Anthony Gagliardi hoists the Angler of the Year trophy as wife Kristen looks on.

44th: Gagliardi Relieved

Gagliardi admitted that the stress of trying to lock up AOY had started to wear on him.

"It feels great, and I'm kind of relieved that it's over with," he said. "It's been kind of stressful the last couple of nights, and now it's time to enjoy the year I had."

He said today's weigh-in was on his mind throughout the day. When his turn finally came, his bag registered 13-12. That was a little more than a pound in excess of what he needed.

"I was pretty much worried the whole time – I was sure I needed one more good fish. I couldn't get it all day, and then with 10 minutes to go, I lost a 4(-pounder) and a 3 1/2. I thought that was going to cost me (the title) right there."

He focused on bed-fish and caught most of them on a Zoom Fluke. If they missed the bait, he'd throw back in with a Spot Remover jighead or a Zoom Brush Hog.

"I caught about 20 keepers again, but the size was way down. I don't think I even had a 3-pounder today."

26th: Couch Stayed Close

Due to the rough weather, Couch opted against making the 50-mile run to the place where he caught his 19-04 bag of largemouths on day 1.

"I went about a mile, but I decided I didn't want to go 49 more, and I turned around and came back," he said. "I didn't think my body could take that beating.

"I know I could've made the cut if I would've went, but that's water under the bridge."

Because he stayed in the northern end, he had to switch his focus to smallmouths.

"I caught every one of them around boat docks. I was just running and gunning."
