Nothing short of a Top 10 will satisfy Dion Hibdon this week, and he appears determined to make it happen.

The Missouri veteran came in knowing he had to have his best finish of 2006 – by far – or he'd miss the FLW Tour Championship for the third consecutive year. He got off to a rousing start with a 20-13 bag of largemouths, and he led day 1 at the Champlain FLW Tour by more than 1 1/2 pounds.

Neither he nor Georgia's Tony Couch, who was 2nd with 19-04, are sight-fishing. Couch caught a limit of largemouths early, then boosted his bag with two hefty smallmouths on the way back to the launch.

Florida's Scott Martin, the 2004 winner here who wants nothing to do with largemouths, is sight-fishing. He brought in 18-13 to occupy the No. 3 slot. California's R.J. Bennett (18-10) and another Floridian, Thanh Le (18-08), rounded out the Top 5, and both looked at most of their fish.

Here's the bottom half of the Top 10:

6. J.T. Kenney: 18-03
7. Kevin Vida: 18-02
8. Alton Jones: 18-01
9. Curt Lytle: 17-13
10. Thomas LaVictoire: 17-12

The weather in the Plattsburgh, N.Y. area was sunny and clear, and sight-fishing conditions were nearly perfect. That might not be the case tomorrow, as scattered thunderstorms and a stiffer wind are predicted. Couple that with the fact that many of the easy bed-fish were picked off today, and there's a good chance overall weights will go down considerably.

As always at Champlain, there's a huge logjam around the 15-pound mark. The Top 115 anglers all caught at least 14 pounds, but only the Top 15 caught 17 or more.

South Carolina's Anthony Gagliardi, the leader in the Angler of the Year race that could be decided tomorrow, had a solid first day with a 16-01 bag that put him in 48th. Of his three closest pursuers, only Matt Herren fared better. He's 33rd with just 7 ounces more than Gagliardi.

Gagliardi came in with a 35-point lead, so he can seal the title by moving up 13 spots tomorrow.

The field will be cut to the Top 10 after tomorrow's weigh-in. Weights will be zeroed for day 3, and the winner will be determined by highest combined total over the final 2 days.

Hibdon's Strategy Sound

Before he came to Champlain, Hibdon confabbed with his father (longtime pro Guido Hibdon) and his former EverStart Series roommate (upstate New York resident Ricky Doyle), and they tried to come up with a plan that would give him his best chance of making the Top 10. He's 75th in the points and needs a big move to make the FLWTC.

Their consensus was to make a long run south and focus exclusively on largemouths. It worked out beautifully today.

"I spent all my time practicing down there, because that's where the big ones kind of live," he said. "We decided that I had to go where they lived, and I was lucky enough today to have it pan out."

He's no stranger to success here. When the legendary Roland Martin notched the last of his 19 Bassmaster Tour victories in 1997, he finished 2nd, just 6 ounces back.

Today's bag was topped by a 5-03 brute. He had a couple of other competitors in his general area, but no close company.

"I'm doing something different than a lot of people – keying on a little bit different stuff," he said. "I'm excited because it's something that I love to do. When I come north, this is what I do and this is how I catch them."

He said he has a backup plan, but won't resort to it.

"I either have to make the Top 10, or I have no chance of going to Birmingham (for the FLWTC at Lay Lake). Me fishing bad all year has forced me into this position, and if I don't make it, then so be it.

"There is a Plan B, but I'll have to completely destroy a boat or something to go to it."

He's not particularly concerned about the rough weather in tomorrow's forecast.

"It's only going to affect me going and coming. It's all about managing your time correctly. If it takes you 3 hours to get there, then you know you're only going to have 2 hours to fish because it'll take you 3 hours to get back.

"You just have to use your head and don't do anything stupid. You can't push your luck because when you rush, that's when you hurt yourself trying to run that big stuff."

Tony Couch's bag was bolstered by the biggest bass of the day.

2nd: Hawg Helps Couch

Couch's bag was topped by the day's biggest fish – a 5-12 largemouth.

"Everything went as planned today," he said. "I caught 15 or 16 keepers and I got the big one in the middle of the day. I had a real good practice and I anticipated catching 17 or 18 pounds, and that big one gave me a little more than I anticipated."

Like Hibdon, he started the day with a long southern run to a largemouth hangout. He culled up twice with bronzebacks later on.

He said his bites came in spurts.

"You'd get three or four, and then go maybe 30 minutes or an hour without anything, and then get three or four more. There were some lulls in there when they didn't bite as good."

He's not sure what he'll do tomorrow.

"It's touchy, because they're talking about a lot of wind. If it's real windy, I won't make that run. I'll have to stay close and fish for smallmouths, and I think I can get 13 to 15 pounds.

"If I can get 15, I think that'll probably be enough (to make the Top 10 cut). If it's 13, then that probably won't be enough. It all depends on the weather."

> He's 44th in the points, so he took a big step today toward qualifying for the FLWTC (the top 48 make it). He's fished that event three times, but his last appearance was in 1999.

3rd: Martin Exceeds Goal

Martin caught eight keepers today, which was three more than he would have preferred.

"If everything had gone perfectly, I wouldn't have caught more than five. The thing here is you've got to be able to save fish and plan for day 3 and day 4. That's what I'm doing."

He finished 1st and 4th in his previous appearances here, so he obviously knows how to formulate a plan of attack for the lake.

"I've got a lot of (bedding fish locations) marked electronically and I spent a lot of time preparing myself mentally," he said. "Usually when I go in without a solid plan, I don't do very well.

"I wanted to get a big bag today just in case the weather's a little unbearable tomorrow. Then I could maybe make the Top 10 with a little bit smaller bag."

He caught four fish (all of which went to the scales) off beds. The other four bit as he was dragging a jig in deeper water.

"For the deep fish, I'm using a little bit lighter line than I did 2 years ago – 8(-pound test) instead of 10," he said. "The fish are a little deeper this year, and the lighter line allows the bait to sink a little faster and gives it a little more subtle action when you move it around. I think it helps get the bites."

His father won here in '97 with all largemouths, but he refuses to fish for them. He weighed in nothing but smallmouths during his '04 victory.

"All brown, no green – that's my rule here," he said. "I caught (a largemouth) today by accident, and I was mad. It was a 3-pounder, but I threw it back. I think my (co-angler) thought I was on drugs or something.

"I'll throw back every largemouth I catch, unless it's maybe a 5-pounder on the final day. Then it might have to take a boat ride to Plattsburgh."

R.J. Bennett got into a big bunch of bed-fish and ended the day in 3rd place.

4th: Bennett Catches a Bunch

Bennett said he went through more than 20 keepers to compile his bag. His biggest was a 4 1/2-pounder.

"I was on them pretty much all day, primarily sight-fishing," he said. "The other ones I'm catching while I'm covering water between the beds.

"They're bed-fish too - just ones I haven't seen. They're coming up and grabbing the bait."

Even if he can't see the spawners tomorrow due to the weather, he thinks he can still catch them.

"In practice, I caught ones I couldn't see just as good," he said. "You can just throw it up by the bed and they'll eat it.

"It should work fine even if I can't see them. These smallies are pretty aggressive."

He has a target weight in mind for tomorrow.

"My guess is that weights are going to go down a bit tomorrow due to the weather, so if I could get 15 pounds, that should put me in (the Top 10 cut)."

5th: Le Burns Through Bed-Fish

Le is on his first trip to Champlain and had a great day catching spawners. On the negative side, he doesn't think he can duplicate it tomorrow.

"I don't have any of the bigger ones left," he said. "I do have fish, but I'm not going to get 18 pounds (sight-fishing) again. Maybe 15.

"I'll try to get a quick limit sight-fishing, then go to the reeds and the points and the humps and throw a tube."

A 4 1/2-pounder was the biggest of 10 keepers he caught on the day.

"I think I'm going to need 17 pounds minimum (tomorrow) to make the cut. I think I can get 15, but 17 is going to take some work."

48th: Gagliardi Satisfied

Gagliardi was content with today's 16-01 bag, primarily because none of his AOY pursuers really whacked them.

"I'll take it," he said. "If I could do the same thing tomorrow, I'd take my chances with it."

If he catches another 16 tomorrow, then Herren will have to have a huge day to overtake him. Jim Moynagh, who's 3rd in the points, is in 62nd, and Gabe Bolivar (4th) is all the way back in 121st.

"If (Herren) ends up beating me be a pound and a half, that might do it because of how close the weights are," he said. "It probably won't take more than 2 pounds, for sure. I can't falter tomorrow."

He sight-fished most of the day, but won't be troubled if that option is taken out of the equation by the weather tomorrow.

"If the wind blows, I think that'll make my other fish bite a little better," he said. "I'm able to catch those fish just fishing. The only time I sight-fish for them is if they miss (the bait). Then I go and catch them off the beds."

He said he lost one big one today that he couldn't reconnect with.

"It was close to 5 (pounds), and it would have gone a long way toward an 18-pound bag. I know I can catch that tomorrow if I get a couple of breaks. I'm shooting for 17."

180th: Svebek Struggled

Arkansas' Carl Svebek III came in at No. 49 in the points race and needed to move up just one spot to make the FLWTC. That'll be a huge chore after today's 11-05 bag.

"It was just one of those days," he said. "I really had a decent practice and caught a lot of fish, but I just couldn't find the right ones today.

"It was a bad day, and it just so happens that it came when I needed a good day the most. It makes you just want to bang your head against a wall."

He fished most of the day with a jerkbait, and will do the same tomorrow.

"We're supposed to have some wind and storms in the area, so I think that's my best bet to weigh in a big sack."

Notable

> Day 1 stats – 200 anglers, 194 limits, 2 fours, 2 threes, 2 zeroes.

> Martin stands in stark contrast to Hibdon in terms of fatherly advice about Champlain. He said he and Roland have never had a conversation about the lake. "My dad won with largemouths, and up here they're usually not in the same places that the smallmouths are. When I came up here in '02, I decided to go for all smallmouths because I didn't want people to think my dad had given me a bunch of spots to fish. We've never actually spoken about this place."

> Guido Hibdon is 94th with 14-12.

> Gagliardi is befuddled by the fact that his lost lunker failed to get hooked. "It came up and rolled on the bait twice and just moved a massive amount of water. It might still be there tomorrow. It was in about 2 feet of water, so I don't think it's going anwywhere."

> Takahiro Omori came in 48th in the points, but he's all the way back in 196th after catching just three fish for 7-04.

> FLW Tour weigh-in records set today (pros and co-anglers combined) included: 1,878 bass, 4,887 pounds and 347 limits. The number of fish is also an FLW Outdoors record.
