(A few weeks after this event concluded, Randy Howell was DQd and received no money and no points. The updated day 3 standings can be found at the end of this story, below the original day 3 standings.)

The day-3 morning started slow at the Santee Cooper Bassmaster Elite Series. Rain and heavy winds put the hurt on the sight-bite, but things shaped up around noon when the females re-locked. Preston

Clark started the day with a 5-pound lead and extended it considerably. He sight-fished another stout sack – 23-15 – for a 92-10, 3-day total.

He's well on the pace to break Dean Rojas' all-time BASS 4-day weight record of 108-12. Clark just needs to catch 16-02 tomorrow to eclipse it.

With clear skies and light winds predicted for tomorrow, that's easily doable. In every way, it's his tournament to lose. His lead is strong, he found more fish this afternoon to start on tomorrow, and he's one of the best sight-sticks on the whole tour, let alone the final Top 12.

Skeet Reese and Steve Kennedy – 2nd and 3rd respectively – are about 9 1/2 pounds behind him. If Clark catches 25 tomorrow, he'll force Reese and Kennedy into a the 35-pound range. That's a lot, and only one 35-pound-plus bag has been weighed so far (Clark's 39-02 on day 1).

Then again, Kennedy made a strong move today. Reese weighed 23-02 and virtually matched Clark's sack, but Kennedy weighed 27-13, so he's gaining momentum when others are losing it. Kennedy's sack was third to Hackney's and Wurm's day 3 sacks.

Kevin Wirth is currently 4th with 80-12 – 10-14 behind the lead. Wirth's 21-07 sack today wasn't spectacular, and he missed a good opportunity to make up ground on Clark.

Terry Scroggins stepped backwards from 3rd to 5th today with his 18-12 yawner. At 79-14, he'd need the four anglers above him to nosedive for any chance to win.

Here's exactly how the Top 12 weights shake out:

1. Preston Clark: 92-10
2. Skeet Reese: 83-01
3. Stephen Kennedy: 83-00
4. Kevin Wirth: 80-12
5. Terry Scroggins: 79-14
6. Greg Hackney: 78-07
7. Kelly Jordon: 78-06
8. Dean Rojas: 77-11
9. John Crews: 76-08
10. Aaron Martens: 75-10
11. Mike Wurm: 74-05
12. Bink Desaro: 72-04

First out of today's cut was Jimmy Mize – 12 ounces behind Desaro.

Kelly Jordon was 2nd yesterday, but caught 14-13 and slid to 7th.

Hackney moved up big with his 31-03 bag – from 20th to 6th. So did Mike Wurm, who caught a monster 32-04 and moved from 32nd to 11th.

Skeet Reese found two monsters on the way in that he'll start on tomorrow.

The two anglers who were in the Top 12 yesterday but fell out today were Mark Menendez (11-15, 11th to 31st) and Jeff Reynolds (17-13, 12th to 20th).

Clark Not Nervous

Clark was a rookie last year and was a fixture in the BassFan.com Rookie of the Year race, but he flew under everyone else's radar.

He came on strong at the Toho Bassmaster Classic in February, when he hunted the win and weighed the heaviest fish ever caught in a Classic.

He was middling in the first two events of the season (54th, 39th) but has the chance to begin to cement his career tomorrow. He could probably win it from the bank with a Snoopy pole, but this is fishing, and anything can happen.

"I'm fine," he said of his emotions. "I'm drained. I'm tired. But I'm excited about tomorrow. I'm not nervous a bit. I'm just looking forward to getting back out there.

"I'm just having a blast. It's so much fun catching these fish."

On what a win would mean for him right now: "It would solidify my fishing career. There's a lot of guys out there that haven't had one yet.

"I've always wanted to say that for 1 week I was the best in the world. But to me there's a side-note. Kevin (VanDam) isn't here (due to a DQ). You can't say you've beat the best unless you beat him."

His weights have decreased an average of 7 1/2 pounds every day, but that doesn't concern him.

"The big fish I saw yesterday and at the end of practice, I wasn't able to go to today," he said. "The wind was blowing right on them. So I spent a lot of time looking today.

"I've got more big fish to go to tomorrow morning than I've had all week. I could have 20 or 25 pounds in the first hour if I'm fortunate enough to put them in the boat."

And that's exactly what he thinks he needs to lock this thing up. "That would mean Skeet (Reese) would have to have 34. Which is not out of the question. Last year, Kelly (Jordon) did 32 on the last day.

"But I feel like if I could do 25 it would be close to a done deal."

3rd: Kennedy Pounding Area

Most of the field has stuck and moved – you bang a few good ones, then go look somewhere else. Not 3rd-place Kennedy. He pretty much stayed put so far, but did make a move later this afternoon.

"I have 83 pounds after 3 days, so I'm pretty excited," he said. "It's awesome."

About his main area, he said: "I've got one pond I've been fishing for most of the 3 days. There's maybe 15 or 20 beds in there. I've been going around on the same beds for 3 days. The fish just keep coming in there.

"I can't say I saw a lot come in this afternoon, but you couldn't hardly see anything."

He's going to start there tomorrow, even though it only produced 22 of his 27 pounds today. He might also fish a community hole he hit today.

Steve Kennedy fished the same pocket all 3 days, but did catch a 7-pounder somewhere else today.

"Coming in, I stopped in a little pocket. There were probably 30 boats in there. In 5 minutes I managed to catch a 7-pounder.

"I just went around the pocket and didn't see any big fish. I picked up a Kinami Flash. I threw out to a cypress tree in the middle and caught the 7-pounder.

"I'm going to be looking for some more of th

5th: Scroggins Fine With Position

Scroggins and Clark – both from Palatka, Fla. – are old fishing partners and close friends. Scroggins, at this point, feels Clark is pretty much out of reach. But he's fine with that.

He only weighed 18-12 today, which was 9 pounds lighter than yesterday. "It was both conditions and (diminishing) fish. I had an 8-pounder I lost three times yesterday, and the other fish left.

"I didn't stay around in that area. I tried to go and find new fish, and it didn't work out good today.

"I'm fine with it – I did the best I could do today," he added. "I didn't miss anything, and I didn't do anything wrong. I just didn't get big ones."

On his chances to catch Clark: "I'd have to catch 35 pounds tomorrow, and he'd have to stumble. Anything's possible, but I think he's going to win the thing hands-down."

8th: Rojas Challenged

Rojas caught 20-07 today and said it was a struggle.

"For me, it was a very challenging day. It was hard on me. A lot of things didn't flow, the fish bit real funny, and a lot of my fish left."

He found some new ones this afternoon, but was basically all over the place. "It was a big circus. I'm just glad to catch what I did. I was glad to get back to the weigh-in. I just wanted the day to end."

Dean Rojas struggled today and couldn't settle down.

He's 15 pounds behind Clark, but he's still fishing for the win. "I'm going to try to catch the biggest bag I can. To make it this far, and to be where I'm at, with the amount of fish up there, the potential to catch a really big sack is there. I'm excited about tomorrow."

11th: Wurm Blind-Caught 32-04

Don't tell Wurm he needs to be sight-fishing. He caught the biggest bag of the day and climbed from 32nd to 11th. That was after he climbed from 75th to 32nd on day 2, and he did it all blind.

"My hands are awful sore – they're chewed up and scratched up," he said. "But it's wonderful. I just had a real marvelous day on the water. Everything went right."

And unlike almost everybody else, he started quick. "The bites were pretty fast this morning, and it kept improving from there. It's been a phenomenal 3 days."

He practiced on trees and weighed only 14-06 on day 1. He thinks it took the bass a day to "re-supply out to the trees. I'm hoping tomorrow they'll replenish some more in the trees, and I'll be able to catch them again tomorrow."

He's not sure if he's catching bedding or staging fish, but he thinks they're staging. "The water's only 3 feet deep, and I'm casting to trees and stumps. They're picking it up pretty quick – before it hits bottom.

"You don't have to work that little worm very far at all. It's a good bet they're staging because I'm only catching one big fish from each spot – no little ones, no males."

About the Top 12, he said: "It's the best finish I've had this year. But I'm real proud of the fact that I've made three Top 50 cuts. That's a goal of a lot of people – to make that cut in every tournament.

"And I feel some self-gratification coming from so far back. Today and yesterday I caught my two personal best limits. This lake is just phenomenal, and we hit it just perfect."

13th: Mize First One Out

Mize missed the cut by 12 ounces.

"It was a whole lot better than what I was planning on doing," he said. "I'm not a sight-fisherman. But I caught them sight-fishing, so I guess I can catch them. I knew it was the only way I was going to catch them. You couldn't hardly catch them casting."

And although he missed the cut, he's pleased with his tournament. "I'm happy with my finish. I swung one over that was bigger than I thought that might have put me in (the cut), but I was out of fish, which would have made it hard to move up. I would have had to just go looking tomorrow."

He finished 34th at Amistad and 91st at Rayburn, so this finish puts him a step closer to qualifying for the first Bassmaster Major, which is a big goal.

"If I can just do decent in the next two, I can make the Majors. That's a big goal you've got to be shooting for this season."

Notable

> Day 3 stats – 50 anglers, 50 limits.

> Clark on whether the all-time BASS weight record is a goal for him. "I'm not really concerned with that. I'm more concerned with getting the victory. If I happen to get that (win), anything else is just gravy on top of it."

> So if Scroggins doesn't think he can win, what's his goal for tomorrow? More points. "We all fish for Angler of the Year and the Classic. If you can't win, you just do the best you can do and get as many points as you can get."

> Wirth is sight-fishing a Berkley Power Craw, but he might be in trouble. "I don't have any fish for tomorrow. I'm going looking."

> Rojas said he's thought about the possibility that his record will be broken. "Yeah, but I just thought about it, that's it. It all got so blown up at Amistad. I was ready for it to get broken there, so if it happens here, that's fine. Records are made to be broken. They still can't touch the 45-02 (1-day weight record). That's the most important one."

> John Murray caught 24-01 today and finished 14th. He's actually a little relieved, because he'll get a good practice day in for the upcoming Wal-Mart Open (Beaver FLW). For his report, click here to go On Tour With the BassFan Big Sticks.

> Murray laughed when he compared the weights from this event to the expected weights at the Beaver FLW. "The Beaver daily weights will be like the big-fish weights here – 9 pounds, 8 pounds."
