(A few weeks after this event concluded, Randy Howell was DQd and received no money and no points. The updated day 2 standings can be found at the end of this story, below the original day 2 standings.)

To absolutely no one's surprise, Santee Cooper churned out another tub of monster sight-fish at today's Santee Cooper Bassmaster Elite Series. After Alton Jones was DQd yesterday, leader Preston Clark began the day with a 6-pound lead.

Clark caught 10 pounds less today then he did yesterday, but Jordon duplicated his own weight. He improved from 4th to 2nd, and cut the lead by about a pound.

And both are still on pace to beat Dean Rojas' 108-12 all-time BASS 4-day record weight. Clark's 29-05 brought his 2-day total to 68-11, so he needs to average 20 pounds the next 2 days to beat it.

Jordon added 31-10 to his day 1 weight for a 63-09 total.

Terry "Big Show" Scroggins began and ended the day in 3rd. He caught 27-12 for 61-02 total.

Skeet Reese began the day in 5th with 29-12, but caught 30-02 and improved to 4th with 59-15.

Kevin Wirth rounds out the Top 5. He made a big upward movement today with a 31-15 sack that nudged him from 9th to 5th.

Here's a look at the rest of the Top 10:

6. John Crews: 58-13
7. Dean Rojas: 57-04
8. Steve Kennedy: 55-03
9. Jimmy Mize: 52-10
10. Bink Desaro: 51-07

Both Steve Kennedy and Bink Desaro moved big-time. Kennedy came up from 19th with 31-13 today, and Desaro whacked 28-15 to move up from 26th.

Anglers who fell include Bradley Hallman (3rd to 20th), Bradley Stringer (7th to 39th), Peter Thliveros (10th to 45th) and Denny Brauer (11th to 26th).

The field cuts to the Top 12 after tomorrow and Jeff Reynolds is the last man in right now with 50-08.

Byron Velvick, with 39-07, was the last angler to make today's Top 50 cut. Yep, almost 40 pounds to make the cut. Jeff Kriet finished 51st – 5 ounces behind Velvick – although that could change. A BASS official told Kriet not to leave town tonight, which could signal an investigation and potential DQ of an angler or anglers above him in the standings.

While today's conditions were conducive to sight-fishing – warm with a mix of clouds, sun and a light breeze – a system moved through toward dusk. The forecast calls for thunderstorms overnight and into the morning, then clearing.

So tomorrow's sight-bite could be very slow in the morning, especially if tonight's rain adds any color to the water.

Clark Left in Frustration

Yesterday, Clark and Thliveros worked a large area by themselves. Today, it had boats. And it died. Thliveros totally tanked, but Clark was saved by his day 1 catch.

"They got pounded pretty good by the locals today – they showed off their abilities," Clark said. "There's another caught, and another – that's what it was like. I got a little upset toward the end of the day."

There still might be some fish in the area, but he sees it as a positive. It forced him to move and he found new stuff.

"It might be a blessing because I left and found what I think is the mother lode," he said. "I thought I was on the mother lode, but now I think I found it."

He found it late though and couldn't exploit it. "I had about 10 or 15 minutes to fish. I saw an 8, another 8 and a 7. And I probably saw 10 5-pounders in a 50-foot stretch.

"It was time to go, so I said, 'I'll come back and see you tomorrow.'"

Although his lead shrunk by about a half-pound on a day when he could have skated away, he's upbeat about his chances to win.

Kelly Jordon's not thinking about the win right now – he's just having a blast.

"The tournament's only halfway over. You can't catch them all in one day. I had a nice stringer and I wasn't about to push my luck and be late."

About the "two or three local boats" in his area, he said, "They've got all the right in the world to be in that water. At first I was a little upset, but I'm glad they were there now.

"I wasn't outwardly upset – I was upset within myself. This is my living, and I may have four college educations and four weddings to buy. I was just thinking about that – how much it would mean to my career to have a win. And I just kept seeing those 4-pounders going over the sides of the boats.

"Now I'm excited."

2nd: Jordon Feels Great

Jordon won here in 2004 on a sight-fishing pattern. He's one of the best sight-sticks in the field, and he's closing on Clark.

"It feels great," Jordon said. "It just feels great catching fish like we're catching. I had a 9-03 today, and had a 9-02 yesterday that spit up that herring."

His big fish was his last fish of the day. "It was a new fish I'd found this morning. I got it to look at the bait once this morning. I said, 'I'll see you later.'

"I had about 26 or 27 pounds, then went back to her at about 12:30 or 1:00. I fished her forever, then finally decided to go and catch the male. I already had my limit so I let my partner catch it.

"I had the best partner in the world. I said, 'Look man, you might have to let that fish go. I might need it for tomorrow. Would you mind if you catch it and let it go?' He caught it."

At that point, there were two females left. Jordon left and came back to blind-fish the bed. "I pulled out the Mission Fish (swimbait) and they started attacking that sucker. The second pitch in there, the 9-03 hit it. I smoked it right through the nose and it was my last fish of the day.

"I culled out a 5 with that fish. I'd never done that before. That was crazy."

On whether he can win here again, he said: "Sure, if I catch enough big ones. But there's so many great fishermen nowadays. Preston Clark is a fantastic sight-fisherman. Then there's Scroggins, Rojas, Reese. And John Crews has come on strong.

"I don't even think about it (winning). Sure I want to, but I've just had a blast so far. The rest is just gravy. And Byron Velvick made the cut again. We're all fired up for Byron."

10th: Desaro Had 'Awesome' Day

Desaro began the day in 26th with 22-08, but caught 28-15 and broke into the Top 10.

"It was awesome," he said. "I can't say I fished flawlessly, because I dumped two good fish. But I actually went back and caught them.

"There's good karma coming around, or good luck, whatever you want to call it."

Terry Scroggins is still sniffing around – he's 3rd and 7-09 behind Clark.

He's looking at his fish, and is a little concerned about the weather tomorrow. "With the storm kind of rolling in right now, it could be tougher. I still think you'll have to have 25 pounds a day to make that Top 12 cut, even though there's a storm.

"They're up. I just have to get the X-ray vision going with my Smith Optics sunglasses and go looking. This is springtime fishing. In general, it's going to be better as the afternoon goes on.

"You can't get too worried if you don't have a bunch of fish by noon, because you can bang a bunch of weight in an hour or two."

He noted local traffic was a factor today. "There's a lot of local traffic out there that's really hindering a lot of us. I'm just kind of working around it. But with the field now cut in half, it should help out that much more."

12th: Reynolds Excited

Reynolds, with 29-00 today and 50-08 total, is in the all-important 12-place spot. If he can stay there or improve, he'll survive to fish Saturday.

"I feel pretty good – I'm pretty excited about tomorrow," he said. "I'm not excited about the weather forecast, but it'll be the same for everybody."

His bag was 7 1/2 pounds better than yesterday, and he said the difference was better fish moved in. "I found three bigger ones that must have moved in overnight. I fished pretty much the same water, but I did catch one 7 in a place I hadn't fished.

"I just went around looking and came across three on a bed. One was 7, one was about 6 and the other was 3 1/2. I didn't have time to catch them all. As soon as I caught the 7, I left. I'm hoping to go back and catch it tomorrow."

He's a little more than 18 pounds behind Clark. "I don't know if I can win. I'll just go catch all I can every day and see what happens."

Jeff Reynolds found three nice fish that had moved up overnight.

On what he needs to catch to make the Top 12 cut tomorrow: "Boy, I'll tell you, that's a good question. I figure 25 pounds, but I'm scared to even guess. A lot depends on what the weather does. If it gets real windy and rainy, it may not take near as much."

23rd: Howell More Relaxed

Randy Howell had a rough day 1. He fished all day knowing he needed to take a polygraph test that night, and ended the day in 43rd with 19-09. But he battled back today with a 26-15 sack. His 46-08 total puts him 23rd.

"It was a great day," he said. "After taking the polygraph last night, it made me fish real good today.

"Yesterday was awful. They told me at the meeting that I had to take a polygraph after day 1. I had to go get my tackle ready, try to sleep, then fish all day. I'd never taken a polygraph before and I was pretty nervous."

He passed the polygraph each of the three times it was administered. Details of that test, and the reasons behind it, will be published in a separate story soon.

He fished "a lot of new water" today. "It was pretty much all new. I have a lot of areas where I'd seen fish in practice. When there's so many fish caught and weighed in, you know they're coming up everywhere, so you can't get caught up in one area and fish it too long."

51st: Kriet Disappointed

Kriet missed the cut at Rayburn by 12 ounces when he dropped from 22nd to 59th on day 2. This time he improved on day 2 – from 75th to 51st – but he missed the cut by 5 ounces.

"I'm pretty disappointed," he said. "I didn't sight-fish yesterday, but I did today. The moral of story is, if the fish are up, you'd better be doing it.

"I don't really enjoy sight-fishing, but I can do it. I always try to avoid it at all costs. When it comes down to it though, you'll get you butt handed to you if you're not doing it.

"It's disgusting to finish 51st," he added. "That's $10,000 gone. It's a bummer."

He aims to put it behind him though. "I've got to shake it off. I want to win Angler of the Year one of these years. You can't miss cuts and win AOY. I've got to get my stuff together. I can't have these.

"On the bright side, I made a pretty good rebound, but gosh, the last guy to weigh in knocked me out."

102nd: Brauer Bageled

Chad Brauer threw his catch back into the lake today and finished next-to-last with 8-10.

"I had a little problem getting in," he said. "I didn't have much anyway, and I was more than 15 minutes late, so I dumped my catch."

"I put all my practice in on the upper lake – trying to fish docks," he added. "I felt like I had the chance to do all right if I got enough bites. I wasn't getting many bites, but the fish I was catching were big.

"I stuck with that the first day, then I tried to go sight-fish on the lower lake today. I didn't run into any good fish."

> A propeller problem forced his late return.

Notable

> Alton Jones won the big-fish award yesterday, but was later DQd. When the standings were adjusted, Kelly Jordon and Preston Clark tied for the day 1 big-fish award with their 9-02s.

> Kelly Jordon asked BASS tournament director Trip Weldon if it would have been legal to put a herring back in the mouth of that 9-02. It had spit it up in the livewell. Jordon reported that Weldon said no, it would not be legal.

> Aaron Martens caught 27-06 today and improved 10 spots to 13th. He's currently 5 ounces behind the Top 12 cut.

> BassFan Big Stick John Murray made the cut in 24th. Today was the first anniversary of Jarrett Edwards' cancer diagnosis. He made the cut in 39th. To read both of their reports, click here to go On Tour With the BassFan Big Sticks.
