Evers Takes Over Top Spot, Hill Sits A Pound Back

The prevailing mentality among the field after yesterday's weigh-in at the Clarks Hill Bassmaster Elite Series was that fishing would steadily improve as the event wore on. But Clarks Hill's green fish have a reputation of being unpredictable, and they certainly lived up to it today.

Weights were down across the board on day 2, and the 20-plus-pound limit that made an appearance on day 1 was nowhere to be found after the scales shut down in Georgia today.

Edwin Evers turned in the day's best limit at 18-13 and climbed 11 spots up the leader board from 12th to 1st. He'll take a 2-01 cushion into the 3rd day of competition.

Kenyon Hill weighed in 2 pounds less today than he did on day 1, but his 31-13, 2-day total has him sitting in 2nd place just 1 ounce over 3rd place Denny Brauer. Brauer told BassFan yesterday that he wasn't sure if he could even get a limit on day 2. He did, but his 9-12 sack was nowhere close to what he turned in on day 1.

Greg Gutierrez was another big mover today. He improved on his day 1 catch by a little over 2 pounds with his 16-10 day-2 bag. That brings his 2-day average up to 15 1/2 pounds, which is good enough for 4th place.

Alton Jones was one of the anglers who predicted fishing to heat up today, but his bite fizzled instead of sizzled. In spite of falling 3 pounds off the 16-12 benchmark he set on day 1, Jones' 13-09 day-2 limit allowed him to move up three spots into 5th.

While the leader board showed significant signs of shake up today, the spacing within the Top 12 is right on par with what it was yesterday. The field is now cut to the Top 50, who'll fish tomorrow, then only the Top 12 will fish the final day. Here's a look at the current Top 12. Total weight is followed by distance from leader in red.

Reports from the field say that the sight-fishing strategy that several pros employed on day 1 took a dive today, and that's a big reason for the flip-flop in the standings. Add to that the fact that the blueback herring spawn still hasn't kicked in to high gear and it all equals up to a lethargic bite that the Elite Series competitors are having a tough time staying on top of.

Everything 'Went Right' for Evers

Evers is never too wordy when it comes to talking about his patterns, especially when he's on something that's working as well as his Clarks strategy is this week. But the Oklahoma pro did hint that he's staying shallow to catch his fish and he's not staying in one place for long.

"I'm covering a ton of water and I must have fished a zillion different spots," he said.

Also notable about his pattern is that he's hitting each spot repeatedly throughout the day. Dozens of pros have mentioned how important it is to be "in the right place at the right time" for the Clarks Hill herring bite, and the fact that Evers is recycling his shallow spots would fit into that mentality.

Evers said he's excited about the forecast of clouds, wind and rain for tomorrow, which would pretty much rule out the likelihood he's on any kind of bed-fish bite. Is it possible he's tuned in to a subtle herring-driven feed that the other pros are missing? Maybe, but it's not likely he'll be sharing that kind of information until this derby's done.

His bag was achored down by the big bass of the day, a 6-07 largemouth he caught on his third cast this morning. "I'm not sure I deserved that big fish, but it was one of those days where a lot went right."

2nd: Back to Basics for Hill

The general consensus among the field has been that the Clarks Hill bass are in the final throes of the spawning ritual. Most of the bass are assumed to be already in the post-spawn mode, while a few very late bloomers are left on beds. But Hill is targeting fish that he believes are actually in a pre-spawn pattern.

He's catching all his fish in water less than 2-feet deep - a characteristic of his pattern that's eerily similar to Mike McClelland's winning strategy from last year. He noted that he's tossing a variety of baits to fill his creel, but the secret to his success is keeping things simple.

"When the bite is tough like this a lot of guys tend to start stretching themselves thin and trying to do a lot of different things, but I’m doing the opposite," he said. "I tried to keep things simple and I just went back to plain old meat-and-potatoes fishing today.

"I changed baits up and decided to emphasize techniques that I knew would entice quality and not numbers of fish," he added. "I plan to get even more specific tomorrow. I'll probably only have three or four rods on the deck."

3rd: Brauer's Bite 'Fragile'

Brauer played down his 22 pounds as a bit of a fluke yesterday and said he had "no clue" whether or not he could duplicate that kind of showing today. He did manage a limit, but the big bites, of which he had three on day 1, completely eluded him today.

"I went and highlighted some of the key areas I had success in yesterday, and that was about as unproductive as I thought it would be," he said. "It's really hard to repeat on water right now.

"My bite is just real fragile right now," he added. "Everything about this lake is fragile right now. When those fish are post-spawn all it takes is a little subtle change in weather and that can really dictate a huge difference."

He's running a mix of structure that includes points, channel ledges and "pretty much anything that looks like a spot where those herring could move up." But he plans to scrap everything tomorrow and start over from square one.

"To be honest, I really don't know what's happening out there," he said. "This place is really tough to predict right now. I don't know what I'm going to catch from day to day, and I really don't know what anybody else is doing either.

"A lot of the water I'm fishing is conducive for that herring bite to happen, but I haven't seen any of that yet," he added. "I know that when that happens things can really start looking up, so I'm just going to keep running that kind of water and hope I show up when a school starts working."

4th: Gutierrez Looking

Gutierrez felt that leading into this event he'd be "lucky" to weigh in 10 pounds a day. But a mediocre practice period morphed into 2 days of solid catches come tournament time.

The California pro said he's "seeing" his fish, "but not necessarily sight-fishing. I'm not sitting on one spot throwing at one fish on a bed. I'm basically going through areas and catching glimpses of fish, then coming back and fishing for them."

One of his day-2 weigh fish revealed its presence when it came up from the depths and aggressively flared its gills at his trolling motor.

"I've seen them do that a few times before," he said. "They'll try to attack anything when it's spawn time. I backed up and tried to fish for that fish, but it wouldn't bite. So I fished around and then stopped back on that spot about an hour later all it took was one cast up there and I got bit. That was about a 3-pounder."

He's not employing a cast-and-cruise strategy like many of his fellow competitors, instead he's "slowly and methodically" picking apart his areas.

"Yesterday I fished one pocket pretty much exclusively," he said. "I caught two 5s out of there and then today I caught two more 5s out of that general area. So it's definitely paying off to slow down and work my spots.

"I think I've pretty much spent that area, but I saw a few more in a different spot this afternoon. I'll probably run there first thing in the morning. If I can get some decent fish out of there I've got a spot on the total opposite end of the lake I'll probably look at."

6th: Smith Might Change

Oklahoma pro David Smith fell two spots in the standings on day 2, but he made up nearly a pound on 1st place. Smith said yesterday that he'd found a "good-sized" fish on a bed towards the end of the day that he planned to visit first thing this morning. He caught that fish today, but unfortunately it didn't carry the weight he thought it would.

"She was only about 4 pounds," he said. "I saw her yesterday and I figured she was at least 5, but I'm not complaining. I'll take what I can get at this point."

Like Gutierrez, his eyes are playing a big part in his strategy, but he's not strictly bed-fishing.

"A lot of guys are going in and spending lots of time looking for bed-fish on the bank," he noted. "What I'm doing is going in pockets and just making long casts into about 4 feet of water. As I'm fishing I'm just trying to take in everything around me. If you'll just look straight down it's amazing what you can see."

He described his method as a "bed pattern," but noted that he's also able to catch post-spawn fish using his strategy. You can count him among the contingent of pros covering plenty of water. He's narrowed the lake down to a 2-mile stretch, and he's bouncing around randomly in that area throughout the day.

However, he's got a change in game plan on his mind for tomorrow, depending on how his morning plays out.

"Tomorrow afternoon I might switch it up and go for that herring bite," he said. "Those bluebacks are starting to show up. I'm pretty sure a couple guys who weighed big bags today were tuned in to that. Some of these guys are really going to load up in the next couple days."
