The big-bass bonanza continued today at the Lake Falcon Bassmaster Elite Series event in Zapata, Texas. Twelve 30-pound bags hit the scales today. That's three less than yesterday - a likely outcome considering the wind completely switched directions and blew even harder today than it did on day 1.

In spite of several anglers making a valiant run at it, nobody was able to overtake Aaron Martens. The Californian turned Alabamian caught 37-13 today for a 2-day total of 79-13 and control of the lead heading into the third day of competition.

But Martens lead is dwindling. He finished day 1 over 6 pounds in front of his closest competitor and now only leads by 3-04 over another former Californian, Byron Velvick.

Velvick caught his 41-11 limit, the heaviest of the day, from an offshore spot that he and Martens are sharing. A quick glance at the numbers tells you that Martens and Velvick have milked over 150 pounds from their area the last 2 days, and that's not adding in their co-anglers' totals. The big question there is whether or not their goldmine of green fish can hold up to another two days of all-out assault.

Mark Davis' weight dropped on day 2, but not by much. He weighed in 33-09 today and that has him sitting in the 3rd-place spot. He's exactly 11 pounds behind Martens and over 7 pounds back from Velvick, but he doesn't think he's out of contention yet.

"I had an opportunity to have a much bigger bag today," he said. "The potential for a 40-pound bag is there, but everything has to go right. Those guys that are catching those big bags are just doing everything right."

Paul Elias made a big jump up the leader board today courtesy of a 39-01 limit. His 67-06 total has him in 4th. Rounding out the Top 5 is Mike Iaconelli, who moved up one spot from 6th on day 1.

Here's how the current Top 12 shakes out (red numbers in parentheses indicate deficit margin from leader):

1. Aaron Martens: 79-13
2. Byron Velvick: 76-09 (3-04)
3. Mark Davis: 68-13 (11-00)
4. Paul Elias: 67-06 (12-07)
5. Mike Iaconelli: 66-05 (13-08)
6. Bernie Schultz: 61-15 (17-14)
7. Jason Williamson: 60-13 (19-00)
8. Scott Rook: 60-05 (19-08)
9. Derek Remitz: 59-07 (20-06)
10. Scott Campbell: 59-05 (20-08)
11. Terry Scroggins: 58-02 (21-11)
12. Gary Klein: 57-15 (21-14)

A few more clues were dropped today about the deep pattern that seems to be producing the majority of the big bags. As already mentioned, Martens and Velvick aren't just fishing the same pattern, they're literally fishing the same spot.

Martens, Velvick, Elias, Iaconelli, Scott Rook, Ish Monroe and probably a few others are reportedly fishing within sight of each other. Like Martens and Velvick, Elias and Monroe are also vying for the same particular spot, but they're not exactly sharing - more on that below.

There appears to be a definite pattern that several anglers in the Top 10 are clued into, and that pattern is very specific in terms of the spots and structures that make it successful. Yesterday Ish Monroe noted that the structure he's catching his fish off is "weird" and said that it was cutting through 50-pound braid on the hookset.

Today Byron Velvick said something that provided some insight into what Monroe could be dealing with.

"I really started figuring out what I'm fishing today," he said. "It's some kind of foundation. I think my fish are living in some rocky old house at the bottom of the lake."

A few other anglers mentioned fishing similar structures that looked like old slabs of what were once probably homes and businesses built along the banks of the Rio Grande River. If that's the case, that'd make these areas textbook transition spots between shallow spawning grounds and the deeper water of the river channel, and that would mean there's realistic potential for those spots to replenish the next 2 days.

Byron Velvick says he's going to live or die with the fish in his spot.

Martens Holding Strong

Martens couldn't muster another 40-pound limit on day 2, but his 37-13 sack was more than enough to keep him in the top spot with half the tournament in the books. "Nerve wrecking" was the phrase he used to describe what it's like fishing in such close proximity to 2nd-place Velvick.

"I can see when he is catching them, and it’s a little disheartening, especially when he’s catching bigger ones like he was today," he said. "We just swapped back and forth all day long. I really don't like doing that, but that's what you have to do."

He said he caught two 7-pounders on consecutive casts off the spot during practice, but figured the area would be covered with boats on the first morning of competition.

"I sat there and watched that spot for 4 hours yesterday morning and finally I was like, 'I have to go over there.' I pulled up over there and made one cast and turned around and here comes Byron. I figured someone else would find that spot and I guess it was him."

About the astronomical weights coming out of the Texas reservoir, he said: "This is so much fun. But it’s sick to weigh-in nearly 80 pounds and not be the clear-cut leader of the tournament. It could take 145 pounds to win this thing.”

2nd: Velvick Speechless

Byron Velvick's known for never being at a loss for words, but the monster 40-plus-pound bag that he plucked from Lake Falcon left him speechless at today's weigh-in.

"I don't know what to say, I really don't. I'm just blown away. I didn't know what (my bag) weighed today. I knew it was heavy, and I figured it was over 40 pounds, but that's just crazy. What's happening out there - it's amazing."

The one thing that's different about him and Martens right now is that Martens has a backup spot he can rely on should their current oasis of lunkers run dry.

"This is it for me," he said. "This is my only spot. Aaron has another little area he can run to, but I really don't have much else. I guess I'll either be a zero or a hero, but I'm sticking to this spot."

About whether or not he thought the spot could keep producing, he said: "I don't know. I'd like to think these are migratory fish. I'm hoping a bunch more come up and decide to take residence in my little underwater pueblo and I can go out and whack them again tomorrow."

3rd: More of the Same for Davis

Mark Davis is one of the few anglers in the Top 10 not concentrating on the foundation bite. He's picking off post-spawn bass by pulling plastics through deeper submerged brush.

All total he estimated he's got about 20 spots where he can catch solid limits.

"I'm definitely not worried about running out of fish," he said. "And the good thing about my spot is I'm not really sharing it with anybody like a lot of these other guys are. The only person in the Top 10 that's anywhere near me is Derek Remitz, and we're not getting in each others' way.

"I think everything's going to be just fine. I'm not saying I'm going to go out there and win the tournament, but my spots have what it takes to produce a big limit, so it's not out of the realm of possibility. Catching a 40-pound bag isn't easy, but it's not unforeseeable, either.

"The way this lake fishes, as long as you're doing the right thing in the right areas, everybody has a chance to catch 40 pounds."

Paul Elias weighed 39-01 today and moved up 22 places into 4th.

4th: Elias Fought for His Spot

Paul Elias made a big jump up the leader board today from 26th into 4th thanks to his 39-01 sack, which turned out to be the second-heaviest of the day behind Velvick's. He said he didn't do anything different than he did yesterday - he just got to fish his spots.

"The spot I'm fishing is a real small spot and I'm sharing it with Ish Monroe," he said. "I had a bad boat draw the first day and he beat me to it. I waited around trying to get on that spot and he never left.

"I went there first thing this morning and fished it. I told Ish I'd get off that point after I caught my five, and I actually left early after I'd only caught four. I think Ish feels like I did him wrong, but I found those fish in practice just like he did, and that's where I'd always planned to start the first day.

"I even gave him the bait I was throwing and left my marker buoy out there for him," he added.

Elias said he plans to give the spot another shot tomorrow, and said he'll "give Ish the same courtesy (he) gave him today.

"That's the way it is out there right now. There's a lot of guys fishing out deep and we're all on these small areas. One boat pulls off and another pulls on - that's how it's been all tournament. Hopefully it'll lighten up tomorrow, but a lot of these guys are fishing deep, so it probably won't."

19th: Monroe Miffed

Monroe only weighed in a little over 20 pounds today, about 15 pounds lighter than the sack he brought in yesterday. If you swapped Monroe's day-2 limit with Elias' 39-01 stringer, he's looking at a 3rd-place position instead of his current spot in 19th.

"If you watch a guy catch them on a spot and he's in the Top 5 on day 2, you should show that guy some respect the next day," he said. "If we both would've arrived at that spot at the same time on the first day there's nothing either of us could say about it.

"But he came in after me, and then sat there and watched me catch them," he added. "He knew I caught them there and he knew I was in the Top 5. Then today I show up and he's sitting on the spot. I think that's wrong.

"I've surrendered spots to guys who are high in the standings. We all have at some point. That's just a common courtesy here. I've done favors for guys and those guys return the favor sometime down the road. I guess in the end I just feel like I was disrespected today."

Feelings aside, he knows what kind of potential the spot holds and believes he could fish himself right back into the Top 12 tomorrow.

"I'm going to the spot tomorrow," he said. "I'm sure Paul will, too. I'm less than 2 pounds out right now and all it'll take is a few good bites and I could be right back up in the mix. Obviously, there are plenty of big fish stacked in that area. I just have to go get them."

Bernie Schultz says the wind has kept him from fishing a lot of his far-away spots the first 2 days, but he might chance the run on day 3.

6th: Schultz Switching

Bernie Schultz 61-15 total is good enough to have him securely in the 6th-place spot after two days of competition. Schultz's pattern most closely resembles what Mark Davis is doing, with the exception that he's making occasional trips up shallow to find his bigger bites.

"I'm flipping and casting an Oldham jig and a Senko around shallow brush and on deeper trees and points," he said. "My stuff is kind of against the grain though because I'm actually catching my bigger fish up shallow. I'm catching equal numbers shallow and deep, but my shallow fish are better quality."

He said the wind's severely limited the areas he's been able to fish the past couple of days, but that's turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

"I would've ran a long way if it hadn't been for the wind. I've got some spots further south down the lake and it's eating me up that I haven't been able to look at those. But the wind kept me close the last 2 days and I've done well, so I guess it's a good thing."

With lighter winds predicted for day 3 he's keeping his long-distance spots in the back of his mind, but he noted he'll check on his closer fish before risking a run down the lake.

Notable

> Day 1 stats – 109 anglers, 105 limits, 3 fours (two more than yesterday), 1 zero.

> Gary Klein is currently on the bubble for the Top 12 cut with his 2-day total of 57-15. To put it in perspective, Kevin VanDam won the last Elite Series event on Florida's Lake Toho with a 4-day total of 59-07.

> Todd Faircloth is the angler bringing up the tail end of the Top 50 cut with 49-07. Steve Kennedy barely missed the cut with 49-00.
