Day 1 of the Guntersville Bassmaster wasn't quite the toad-totin' fireworks display that BassFans witnessed last year, but it was close. The Alabama lake lived up to its big-fish reputation and kicked out some serious sacks as day 1 of the Bassmaster competition came to a close. Jack Wade led for most of the weigh-in, but Edwin Evers stole his glory with his last-flight, 27-15 limit.

All but one of the Top 10 weighed over 20 pounds. In second is Jack Wade with 25-06 (2-09 behind Evers) and Tommy Biffle's in 3rd with 25-04. Terry Scroggins continues his hot streak and he's in 4th with 22-02. The 5th-place spot belongs to Michael Hicks with 21-10.

Here's a look at the Top 12:

1. Edwin Evers: 5, 27-15
2. Jack Wade: 5, 25-06 lb
3. Tommy Biffle: 5, 25-04
4. Terry Scroggins: 5, 22-02
5. Michael Hicks: 5, 21-10
6. Morizo Shimizu: 5, 21-05
7. Jack Gadlage: 5, 20-08
8. Mark Rose: 5, 20-03
9. Jimmy Houston: 5, 20-00
10. Skeet Reese: 5, 19-12
11. Jason Quinn: 5, 19-03
12. Yusuke Miyazaki: 5, 18-14

The field cuts to 12 on Friday, and it's a 9-pound margin between 1st and 12th. However, the margin between 12th and 50th is only 4-07. That's a pittance on Guntersville and tomorrow could deliver a shakeup punch to the Top 12.

The weather today was cold with winds up to about 10 mph, and clouds rolled in during the afternoon. The water's still muddy in spots from Monday's heavy rains, but the mud seemed to be an advantage for some.

A BFL tournament launches here on Saturday, and those anglers are practicing right now. No pros referred to the BFL specifically, but the few who guarded their information more than usual could be doing so to protect against potential pattern poachers.

Evers on a Pattern

"It was good, it was good," Evers said. "I didn't catch a lot of fish – I just caught some good ones.

"They really bit all day long and I covered a lot of water. I'm fishing a pattern, but I'll know more after tomorrow about how good it is. I'm not wanting to give a whole lot up right now."

Jack Wade said he has three patterns that are working.

He didn't expect to catch this much. "I'm excited – I'm tickled pink. I didn't expect to catch 28 pounds. With the bites I had in practice, I didn't think I would."

He said he's not holding back tomorrow. "I'm swinging. I'm catching them all. I'll only quit jerking when it's time to go in."

Hard Work for Wade

Wade's in 2nd right now. "It was a day of hard work," he said. "I was rewarded with eight or 10 fish, and probably eight were keepers. But I had to work hard to catch them."

He said he's fishing a pattern – actually, more than one. "I caught them off two different patterns, and I've actually got a third pattern working in another area. Biffle's catch today proves that third pattern's working, because it's something he likes to do."

His bites are sporadic, but when he gets one, he said there's more there. "There's usually two or three right there when you get bit. They won't all be keepers though."

And his fish aren't tentative. "When they hit it, they hit it."

He said he had a "so-so" practice that showed him he needed to look for two or three quality bites a day. "With two or three quality bites here, you'll have a quality bag. I was catching 20 pounds a day easy in practice. I'll just put my nose to the grindstone and stay after them.

"The fish I'm catching are positioned in a very unique place. And I'm keying in on that. That's what my bites are coming from."

He's going for it again tomorrow and will try to catch all he can. "I'll try to bust 20 pounds again tomorrow. It'll probably get tough on Saturday, because of the pressure."

He said someone moved in on him today, but he declined to say who it was. "When I got to my starting spot, there was a boat 300 yards away. I didn't even start on the end of my area. He saw me catch a keeper and then a non-keeper, and I never saw anybody fish as fast to get over there. If it was 25 years ago, I'd have let him have it."

Biffle Tight Lipped

Biffle, in 3rd place, didn't reveal much about his day. Probably for good reason, because it appears he's on something good.

"I just had a good day," he said. "I caught a lot of fish. Based on my practice, I thought I'd catch them pretty good, but not this good. I had a lot better day today than yesterday."

Tommy Biffle caught 30 or more fish today.

He's in a new area – he didn't fish it last year. "They're biting pretty good. I probably caught 30 or more, and my biggest was around 6. I only lost one fish – it broke me off.

"We don't start over (after the cut), so I hurt them pretty good today. I think I can catch more there.

"I think my chances are good. I have some backup spots, but I don't know if they'll be any better."

Scroggins' 2-Hour Flurry

Terry Scroggins, in 4th, is hot right now – he's 8th in the Bassmaster points – and his momentum continued today.

"It was pretty slow fishing – one fish here, one fish there – until I got on them," he said. "I only had two fish at 1:00, but then I got 14 bites in 2 hours.

"I had a terrible practice, but I got on a pattern that was really working. I think it'll continue to work well. I think it'll work wherever I go here."

His biggest was a 7-pounder. "I'm looking forward to tomorrow," he said. "There's some grass here. I found some and messed around with it quite a bit.

"I'll just go and fish my pattern tomorrow. I'll just go and start where I left off today and go at it all day long tomorrow. We'll see what happens."

Hicks Had Mechanical Trouble

Hicks, in 5th, bounced back from what could have been a disastrous day.

"The day started off real bad," he said. "I had a mechanical problem and had to run 2 to 3 miles back up to the launch. The hydraulic nut on the steering had backed off and all the fluid came out."

Given the problem, he started close to the ramp. "I caught a few small fish there," he said. "I had an idea of what I wanted to do that day and when we got corrected I went back fishing and caught a 6, then a 5."

Things took a bad turn again when he caught the 5. "My amateur got hooked in the finger, and we had to come back to the ramp again," he said.

With all that happened today, it's amazing he's in 5th. "I feel good," he said. "I'm throwing a bait I like to throw at home (Mineral, Va.).

"I don't know if I'll catch them tomorrow, but I'm fishing the way I like to."

He caught six fish today and said he's fishing an area. "But it's definitely a specific pattern. It's in a spot I found in practice, and it's a heavily fished area.

"I did have some company, but none of the boats are fishing like I am. I'm not too worried about them."

Gadlage Caught a Good Sack

Jack Gadlage, in 7th, was overdue for a good tournament. He started strong today with 20-08.

"It went pretty good," he said. "I actually wasn't expecting to catch this much, because I knew the bite was real tough. So I just went fishing and at 8:00 I already had four in the boat. I had my limit by 10:00. Then at 10:30, I culled and left my spot.

"There was nobody around and I wanted to lay off my fish."

He has confidence in his area. "I actually feel pretty good – I think there's a lot of fish there. As long as nobody else finds it, or is on it when I get there, I should do pretty well tomorrow."

He said he can catch an easy limit off docks, but they aren't the fish he wants.

"I can fish docks, but I found this area on the second day of practice. I stuck a little keeper, then one about 8. I got one more bite, shook it off and left. It was obvious there was more fish there."

Rose Throwing Blades

"It was a good day," Rose said. He's in 8th with 20-03. "It was better than any day I had in practice. I wasn't on a whole lot, but I found one little deal late the last day and it produced a little better than I thought it would."

Based on that find, he tried to expand today. "I went running today to look for more stuff like what I'd found. I found another little area, so I have two spots, but they're small.

"The good thing is they're not getting a lot of pressure. I'm throwing a 3/16-ounce Strike King Bleeding Bait spinnerbait.

"I have a little confidence," he said. "I've only got two areas so far, and I many have to run a little new water tomorrow. I feel like if I can catch a limit before I do that, I can do well. I'd like to expand what I have after I get my five."

Notable

> Day 1 stats – 158 anglers, 57 limits, 13 zeroes.

> Skeet Reese, No. 1 in the State Farm-BassFan World Rankings, is 10th with 19-12. Greg Hackney, No. 2 in the world, is 67th with 12-07. Kevin VanDam, No. 3 in the world, led day 1 at last year's event. He's 88th with 9-14.

> George Cochran, last year's winner, is 25th with 16-12.

> Jay Yelas, who's never done well on Guntersville, is off to a good start. He's 27th with 16-09.

> If the co-anglers were ranked by their weights alone – rather than combined weight – Gerald Swindle's father Tommy would be 1st, Gerald's buddy David Kilgore (Jasper, Ala.) would be 2nd. Where is Gerald himself? He's 104th on the pro side with 7-15.

> The list of those who didn't do well is almost the biggest story today: Larry Nixon (0-00), Brent Chapman (0-00), Scott Rook (1-13), Denny Brauer (1-15), Alton Jones (2-13).

> Ish Monroe was another who zeroed. "I had four good bites and never put any in the boat," he said. "I threw the swimbait for a while and didn't get bit on it."
