Haynes, Lambert Sack 'Em Up Again

Randy Haynes and Jason Lambert continued to separate themselves from the field on day 2 of the Kentucky Lake FLW Tour, putting 6 pounds between themselves and the other 28 competitors who survived the midway cut.

Haynes' 19-15 stringer gave him a 46-02 total and Lambert's 19-08 haul pushed his aggregate to 43-14. Scott Martin, who boxed an even 20 pounds, is a distant 3rd with 37-14.

"If me and Haynes don't screw up, it'll be a two-man race," said Lambert, "but it's pretty easy right now to go out there and not have a good day."

Austin Felix and Josh Douglas held onto the Nos. 4 and 5 positions in which they began the day. Both caught 17-08 sacks for respective totals of 37-05 and 37-02.

Here's how the top 10 looks heading into the weekend, with red numbers in parentheses indicating deficit margins from the leader:

A series of thunderstorms dropped rain on the lake for much of the day, but that seemed to have little impact on the action. Less than half the field caught limits for the second consecutive day and 17 anglers blanked – that number was 13 on day 1.

There was little change among the top 10 (on the bottom 3 were newcomers), but several competitors made big upward moves to get inside the 30-cut. That list included Alex Davis (113th to 17th with a day-best 22-00), Mark Rose (64th to 19th, 17-15), Michael Neal (99th to 25th, 19-04) and Bill McDonald (93rd to 30th, 17-12).

Anthony Gagliardi, a past winner at Kentucky Lake, took the biggest tumble, falling from 11th to 75th with just one fish for 4-02.

Saturday's weather forecast for the Gilbertsville, Ky. area predicts partly cloudy skies with a high temperature of 87 degrees and an 8-mph wind out of the west/southwest.

The field will be reduced to the top 10 and the conclusion of the day-3 weigh-in, with the winner determined Sunday based on highest cumulative weight.

Bait Change for Haynes

> Day 2: 5, 19-15 (10, 46-02)

Haynes did most of his work at the same locale that produced his 26-pound stringer on day 1, but showed the fish a new offering.

"I didn't crank today – I threw more swimbaits," he said. "That was about the only thing I changed. The size was down a little bit and the numbers were up; I caught eight or nine fish today (compared to six the previous day).

"I'm pretty much camping on that place and I don't think there's anybody around me for 20 miles."

The place is in the northern portion of the lake (most of the field spent the first 2 days in the southern end). He'll abandon it on day 3 if the size of the fish continues to decrease and head south toward Paris Landing.

His day-2 bag was topped by a 5-pounder.

"Something happened this morning, I don't know if it was a little bit cooler air or what, but they just weren't eating good. I'm seeing more fish there, and more than likely when that happens the size goes down as the numbers go up.

"I'm just frustrated because it's not the way I like to fish, just sticking to one spot, but I ventured off their today and there was nothing going on bait-wise anywhere around there."

2nd: Lambert Moved In

> Day 2: 5, 19-08 (10, 43-14)

Lambert pulled his fish from much skinnier water than he'd plied on day 1.

"I weighed all my fish off shallow bars today that you can't look at, you just have to go fish," he said. "(His deeper stuff) wasn't producing at all early and the day was so cloudy and gloomy, and there were a lot more people out offshore today after we caught them good yesterday.

"I've got one key shallow spot that I caught two big ones off of today. I'll probably use it again, but hopefully not until Sunday. The only way I'll go to it tomorrow is if I absolutely have to.

A 6-12 specimen was the biggest fish in his bag. He lost three bites early in the day, one of which likely would've aided his cause.

"Two of them I didn't have on long enough to tell what they were, but the other one I had two-thirds of the way to the boat. I'm not saying it was a 6- or 7-pounder or anything, but it was solid."

He thinks the offshore action might improve over the weekend with the reduced field.

"This place is getting due to really turn loose. If I can scratch out 18, 19 or 20 pounds tomorrow, then Sunday I might have a chance at a real good bag again.

"It's Kentucky Lake, we've got 2 days left and I'm 2 pounds back. I like my chances a lot."

3rd: Martin Staying South

> Day 2: 5, 20-00 (10, 37-14)

Martin is fishing the shallower ledges at the southern end of the lake – most of his fish are coming from the 5- to 6-foot depth range.

"I found one new school today and this morning by about 10:30 I had about 18 pounds," he said. "I milled around a bit after that and upgraded from a spot I fished yesterday.

"I don't have a ton of places ... it's a real timing thing. It's not the best scenario, but at least I'm not stressing about fishing a million different places."

He's throwing a medium-deep LiveTarget crankbait, a hair jig and a worm. He's yet to catch a truly big fish in the event – he's weighed nothing over 4 1/2 pounds.

"I've caught a lot of 4s and a lot of 3-12s. Maybe tomorrow I'll get a couple of those 5s and 6s."

4th: Just 4 for Felix

> Day 2: 4, 17-08 (9, 37-05)

Felix held onto his position in the standings despite failing to catch a limit on day 2.

"I just kind of ran the same sort of stuff and I only caught one off anything where I fished yesterday," he said. "I pulled up on a shallow spot randomly because it looked like something I'd fished (on day 1) and I caught a 6-11).

A Carolina rig was his primary bait on day 2. He's yet to catch anything from water deeper than 16 feet.

"I have an idea of what I want to do, but I don't know this lake well enough to know where to do it. I'll run through what I have tomorrow, then after that it'll be seat-of-the-pants fishing.

"After the practice I had, I'm ecstatic to be where I am – even if I end up falling to 30th."

75th: Big Fall for Gagliardi

> Day 2: 1, 4-02 (6, 21-15)

Gagliardi wasn't totally surprised by his 63-place drop in the standings. He'd caught a 17-13 stringer on day 1.

"I got lucky yesterday, there's really no other way to put it," he said. "I didn't catch a lot in practice and yesterday I ran into two big ones.

"I thought I could at least catch a limit today, but it was way harder. I stayed shallow the whole time and that one fish was the only keeper bite I got – I caught eight or nine short ones."

He fished a swimjig and a weightless worm.

"I have no idea what I would've done differently. I'd have been pretty much lost out there trying to do anything other than what I was doing."
