The key pattern so far at Lake Travis has been … there is no key pattern – and that’s just how Jacob Wheeler likes it.

The former Forrest Wood Cup champion and winner of the first BASSFest actually prefers the maddening and unpredictable nature of Travis this week, and he hopes to make the right moves (and casts) for two more days.

Wheeler moved up five spots today with an 18-03 stringer and unseated Ray Hanselman, Jr. atop the leaderboard after day 2 of Toyota Texas Fest. Wheeler has amassed 35-07 so far compared to Hanselman’s 34-01 in 2nd. Hanselman registered just four keepers today for 12-02.

“There is no pattern,” Wheeler said. “You have to run and do whatever you think will work. You have to trust your instincts here more than in any other tournament I can remember.”

Cliff Pace didn’t catch a double-digit bass today, but his 13-04 limit kept him in 3rd where he has 32-12 overall.

The big mover today was Jason Christie, who passed half the field (54 places) on his way up to 4th behind a 21-13 stringer that gave him 32-07. Drew Benton jumped 17 spots to 5th with a 16-13 effort, pushing his total to 30-12.

Here's a look at the Top 12 following the second day of competition, with deficit margin from Wheeler indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Jacob Wheeler: 35-07
2. Ray Hanselman: 34-01 (1-06)
3. Cliff Pace: 32-12 (2-11)
4. Jason Christie: 32-07 (3-00)
5. Drew Benton: 30-12 (4-11)
6. Bobby Lane: 30-04 (5-03)
7. Kevin VanDam: 30-04 (5-03)
8. Hank Cherry: 29-10 (5-13)
9. Marty Robinson: 28-12 (6-11)
10. Jacob Powroznik: 27-11 (7-12)
11. Jake Whitaker: 27-11 (7-12)
12. Brent Chapman: 27-09 (7-14)

To illustrate how fickle Travis was over the first two days, four anglers who eclipsed 15 pounds on day 1 failed to register a limit today and missed the cut – Brandon Coulter (9th to 51st), David Walker (13th to 85th), Keith Poche (15th to 61st) and Morizo Shimizu (16th to 58th).

Conversely, five anglers who failed to break 9 pounds Thursday bounced back to make the cut today – Chris Zaldain (74th to 37th), Jared Lintner (75th to 28th), Adrian Avena (76th to 40th), Andy Montgomery (80th to 38th) and Justin Lucas (80th to 49th). Other notable climbers were Clifford Pirch (46th to 16th) and Gary Klein (63rd to 18th).

The breezy conditions and boat traffic today made the fishing somewhat better, but it didn’t necessarily trigger the bigger fish to bite more frequently. It was still a matter of weeding through tons of small fish while waiting for a key bite to come along and there’s no reason to believe that will change as the event draws to a close over the weekend.

Temperatures are slated to be back in the 90s on Saturday with partly cloudy skies and a 10 to 20 mph wind.

Another Consistent Day for Wheeler

> Day 2: 5, 18-03 (10, 35-07)

Wheeler says the front deck of his Triton can accommodate about 14 rods. Today, he had that many and then some at the ready for whatever Travis was going to throw at him.

“You just never know what you’re going to deal with,” he said. “I caught them from 1 foot out to 45 feet.”

He’s excelled so far without the benefit of catching a true kicker. Today, his weigh-fish ranged in weight from 3-06 to 4-01.

“I’ve been consistent fortunately, but I haven’t caught any big ones to catapult me,” he said. “That’s how it’ll be won.”

On a lake that harbors 8- to 10-pounders, bigger baits tend to attract the bigger bass, yet today, Wheeler’s biggest fish fell for a small offering, adding another twist to a seemingly unpredictable event.

As evidenced by those who saw their weights fall off precipitously today, Wheeler knows to not take anything for granted on Saturday.

“If I catch 14 pounds, I’ll be ecstatic,” he said. “You just don’t know. I could catch 20. This reminds me of the Forrest Wood Cup in that you just don’t know what to expect. You grind and grind, but with a lot more fish-catching. You don’t know where next bite is coming from or how big it’s going to be. If you take away the 12-inchers here, it’s a grind, and when you catch a 14-incher it’s a big deal.”

Ray Hanselman is hoping the conditions Saturday will lengthen the feeding window in the morning.

2nd: After Fast Start, Hanselman’s Day Fizzled

> Day 2: 4, 12-02 (9, 34-01)

Hanselman is hoping the clouds and wind tomorrow will prolong the morning bite that’s been effective for him. Today, his execution rate wasn’t what he’d hoped it would be, but he’s still in the hunt entering the weekend.

“I had enough bites early to do well,” he said. “I caught two good ones and a couple others just missed it. I’m not getting a ton of bites so I can’t afford to lose any. Hopefully, with the change in conditions tomorrow, I can get a few more bites.”

His first two keepers were a 4-09 and a 4-13, but he wasn’t able to notch a 2-pounder the rest of the day. His other two weigh-fish were both under 1-08.

As he did in practice and on Thursday, he migrated to shade lines on docks this afternoon, but got shut out.

“The last two days of practice and yesterday I got enough bites to make it work, but today I don’t know,” he said. “I ran all types of docks and depths, but couldn’t get them to fire. I was seeing bluegill and smaller bass, even carp, but nothing today.

“I plinked around for a bit and caught a couple small ones and I probably should’ve kept at it for another 1 1/2 pounds, but whatever.”

Despite falling a fish shy of a limit, he wasn’t worried about falling too far down the ledger.

“I figured I’d still be in the top 5,” he said. “Tomorrow’s conditions will give me a few more hours of the active fish bite if not all day. If I can get a bite every hour, that would be awesome.”

Jason Christie shows off his 6-05 kicker caught Friday afternoon.

4th: Christie Could’ve Had More

> Day 2: 5, 21-13 (32-07)

For Christie, this event has unfolded like two one-day tournaments fished back-to-back with another one scheduled for tomorrow. That’s how big of a contrast he saw between days 1 and 2.

The wind and boat traffic stirred up the water, he said, and that makes it easier to fool fish into biting.

“We had different conditions and I feel like that helped some, but all in all, I happened to hit the right places when they were biting,” he said. “I don’t know if I did anything any different from a lot of people.”

The five fish that counted toward his weight today were caught off “stuff” he didn’t target in practice.

“I was just fishing what looks good,” he added. “Today, I was dialed in and I hope to get dialed in again tomorrow.”

His limit was highlighted by a 6-05 caught this afternoon to go with a 5-08 and 4-12 caught within 5 minutes of each other this morning.

“I had 21 with two 2-pounders,” he said. “I lost a giant yesterday and I lost a 6 or 7 so I had a chance at a big bag. It’s a fine line with those four bites. I caught a lot today I wish I had yesterday.”

5th: Benton Narrows His Options

> Day 2: 5, 16-13 (10, 30-12)

After trying several different techniques and having modest success with each, Benton has basically decided to go all in on one in particular. It produced his best fish today and as long as he stays around groups of fish as opposed to fishing for single bites, he thinks his chances this weekend are as good as any.

“I did have a shad-spawn deal in the morning, then I went and chased some schoolers,” he said. “Yesterday, I flipped trees and threw a square-bill, but the last couple of hours, I threw a topwater and caught three good ones.

“Today, my first five keepers were 6 pounds and the shad spawn just wasn’t working. I went back to the topwater and caught a 3, had another 3-pounder follow me then caught a 4-13 and 3-14 and it just snowballed.”

He said any time he’s been able to get the bait around a group of fish versus a single roamer, it’s almost a guaranteed bite.

“The whole deal is if you bring it by one fish by itself, it won’t commit,” he said. “Even the big one I caught. It rolled on it and I hooked it in the top of its head. They have to be in wolfpacks to commit. That competitive factor makes them bite.”

Drew Benton thinks he's figured out his go-to technique for the rest of the tournament.

It’s a scenario he’s seen before at other lakes with ultra-clear water.

“Anywhere they’re schooled up in clear water, it’s sometimes hard to get them to commit,” he said. “It wasn’t that bad earlier in the week, but now we’re on day 6 of everybody throwing stuff at them.

“I don’t know of another way to catch any decent fish. I can catch smaller ones on a jerkbait and a small swimbait. My best chances to catch decent keepers is keep a topwater in my hand.”

80th: Travis Got Best of Faircloth

> Day 2: 5, 8-15 (10, 17-09)

Todd Faircloth had one of those practice sessions he felt good about and typically he follows those up with solid finishes. This week was a different story for the five-time Elite Series winner from Jasper, Texas.

The two or three good bites he was getting earlier in the week vanished once the competition began and left him to settle for 1- and 2-pounders.

“It’s weird how this sport is,” he said. “Some of my best tournaments have been after some of my worst practices. In tournaments like this, you have to fish more instinctively instead of trying to duplicate what you did in practice. You almost had to practice each day. I think I would’ve done better if I’d fished new water each day.

“In practice, I had a good topwater bite going like a lot of guys on schooling fish. When the sun got up, it positioned fish around the docks in obvious spots. I caught lot of fish doing both things, but for some reason, I never had any good bites.”
