This past spring, Jim Bianchi's neck was in an immobilizing brace, a result of triple cervical fusion surgery in March that saw doctors fuse together the C4, C5 and C6 vertebrae in his spine.

It was more of a precautionary measure designed to fend off the potential debilitating effects of an old sports injury. For 12 weeks after the procedure, he had to wear a neck brace to allow the healing process to take hold. Fishing wasn't a viable option then or immediately after shedding the brace.

"I couldn't even lift 5 pounds, let alone fish," he said.

The brace came off June 1, but he wasn't in any shape to fish the James River Bassmaster Northern Open a couple weeks later. The resident of Rush, N.Y., a suburb of Rochester, got back on the water later in the month, however, and won a 2-day club event at Oneida Lake.

Soon after, the power head in his boat motor blew, costing him an opportunity to get a jump on practice for the next Northern Open at Oneida. He went out with a friend for a day of pre-practice and eventually got his motor problems squared away.

Still not feeling anywhere close to 100 percent – he's still dealing with muscle fatigue and some lingering discomfort – he decided to enter the Oneida Open. On the strength of a tournament-best 19-plus pound bag on day 2, he captured his first B.A.S.S. victory last weekend, holding off Tracy Adams by 3 pounds at the central New York fishery.

"I had some time during the (final) day after I felt confident my weight was good enough to win that I started to let it set in and relax," he said.

His only previous Open entry was last year's Cayuga Lake Northern Open, in which he finished 12th. The experience he drew from that tournament helped him deal with the pressure he faced at Oneida.

"I was pretty relaxed after having been there last year," he said. "I was feeling confident in what I was doing and I knew I didn't do anything like drop a fish that would cost me."

Because he didn't fish the James River, he won't be able to claim the Bassmaster Classic berth that is awarded to each Open winner as B.A.S.S. rules require Open winners fish all three events in that division.

Here's how he broke down Oneida in his win.

Practice

Bianchi, who owns an insurance agency, fishes Oneida a couple times a year and has developed a fair amount of confidence there, whether it's targeting smallmouths or largemouths.

"I do feel like I know the lake well," he said, "but it fished a lot differently than normally what would occur there."

He practiced one day on the eastern end of the lake, but didn't find anything of merit, which was fine with him. That way, he didn't have to brave rough conditions if the lake kicked up. He wound up focusing on the western half, pinpointing biting fish around grass beds in depths from 5 to 14 feet.

"I got some key bites in practice and knew where there were some good largemouths," he said. "I had some backup smallmouth I could go to and felt like I could catch 15 pounds of smallmouth."

The bite patterns were hard to figure in the days leading up to the tournament. He said nothing seemed to hold up two days in a row.

"I'd get dialed in on presentations one day and it'd be dead the next day," he said. "I did that with four things. I had 10 to 15 things I knew could work depending on conditions and I just rotated through those.

"Normally, you're looking for smallmouth to react to a topwater and then you can usually catch them in a variety of ways. They weren't everywhere. The largemouths weren't on the bank like some percentage always are, at least not in the numbers from I could find. It truly made it an open tournament because it was very unlike Oneida."

Through his eyes, Oneida's grass was a little thicker than normal this year, but there were spots that had more and other areas that had less than in the past.

"The cabbage wasn't as healthy as it's been either," he added.

The water was also higher than usual, but it didn't seem to help the shallow largemouth bite as it typically does.

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 15-12
> Day 2: 5, 19-04
> Day 3: 5, 17-07
> Total = 12, 52-07

A decent breeze on day 1 put a good chop on the lake, but not enough to throw Bianchi off his game plan. He opted to chase largemouth to start and jigged up more than 15 1/2 pounds (three smallmouth, two largemouth) to open the event in 12th place after the first day.

"On day 1, I worked on my largemouth spot pretty good trying to get a big one," he said. "I leaned on them pretty hard, but only got one good one."

He did, however, make one important observation that clued him in that he could be on the winning spot.

"The interesting thing about the largemouths I discovered was on day 1 I was catching them pretty good on a jig," he said. "One of the fish came up with a big wad of weeds in the net. Once we got the fish on the deck, I looked in the weeds and saw thousands of tiny, almost microscopic crayfish in the weeds.

"It tipped me off that one of two things was happening: Either the bass were eating the adult crayfish or the bluegills and perch were in there eating the small crayfish and that bass followed them in there. Once I saw that I knew I had something I could come back to."

The lake slicked off on Friday and it prompted a change in presentations for Bianchi. He couldn't get bit by smallmouth so he ran back to his largemouth area and pitched a dropshot rig around the edges of the grass. By 10 a.m., he had 19 pounds in his livewell, but stayed in the area near his primo spot most of the day. If another boat would come into the vicinity, he'd slide back over it to protect it, all the while eating sandwiches and chatting up his co-angler.

Bianchi relied on 10-pound PowerPro for his dropshot rigs to pull countless largemouths out of Oneida's grass.

"When it's slick calm like it was, I feel like the largemouths position better in the weeds," he said. "That move to the largemouth area when it was slick was the key for me. Once I saw the crayfish and the numbers of fish I caught there on day 1 and then the quality that was there Friday, I knew I could win there.

"Things stabilized halfway through day 2. Up until then, things were constantly changing."

He shot to the top of the leaderboard with a 19-04 all-largemouth stringer on day 2 and carried a 2-pound cushion into the final day.

He started day 3 on the spot that produced the 19 pounds on day 2, but the quality wasn't there. The wind-aided chop had returned.

"I caught a ton of fish, but no big ones," he said. "Between there and another spot I had about 14 pounds, but no real kickers."

He opted to move to a shallow milfoil shoal he hadn't fished yet, and in short order swung a 3-pound smallie, a 3-15 smallie and a 4-06 largemouth into the boat to push his weight past 17 pounds.

"That place was a little different from the rest of my pattern," he said. "In practice, I'd found it and and there were some rogue smallmouth using the milfoil. I'd caught some largemouth in there, but none as big as the 4-06. That was like a bonus fish."

His 17-07 sack (two smallies, three largemouth) was the heaviest among the 12 finalists and it put away the victory in his favor.

"I came in relaxed," he said. "I didn't set any specific route. I just went fishing and found out what was and wasn't working."

Winning Pattern Notes

> Bianchi said focusing on grass flats was central to his win.

"I felt like they were holding in the edges of the cabbage clumps," he said. "They also seemed to use the bare spots instead of the thicker spots. For the smallmouth, having some rock mixed in was key."

Winning Gear Notes

> Dropshot gear: 7'2" medium-heavy and medium-action Kistler spinning rods, Shimano Saros spinning reel, 10-pound PowerPro braided line (green), unnamed 10-pound fluorocarbon line (leader), unnamed 3/8-oz. dropshot weight, 1/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook, 4" Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits Senko (green-pumpkin).

> He used a 5/16-oz. weight on the lighter rig and used various sizes and colors of the Senko, but the 4" green-pumpkin worked the best.

> He also flipped a 3/4-oz. jig in natural forage colors with a matching craw trailer.

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – "Probably not being married to any one bait in practice and recognizing that the lake was fishing differently. Two decisions I made were key. The first was on day 2 when I opted to focus on largemouth after it slicked off. The second one was leaving those fish alone after catching the big bag on day 2."

> Performance edge – "My Power-Poles came into play on the last spot on day 3. It was really the only time I could utilize them, but in that wind, they were valuable. The other thing was the HydroWave. I've had it for a couple years now. I'd turn it on the shad setting and I'd have fish come from out of nowhere up to the boat. I was able to pitch back out to that fish and catch it most times. I'm not positive, but I have to believe it was the HydroWave that called them in."
