RE: Martens' influence on BPS US Open – Great piece, Pete. You know Aaron was looking down on them. Congrats, guys!
RE: Balog on tech advancements – And all you could buy were pistol-grip casting rods.
RE: Balog on tech advancements – Love this piece, Joe! You are so right!
RE: Compiling bass numbers – I have a friend since grade school and we are 60 years old now. He is an actuarial science guy (math genius). He has written documentation of every bass he has caught since he started bass fishing when he was in his early teens – numbers, lengths, pounds, etc. I'm sure he has caught well over 25,000 bass, maybe closer to 40,000.
RE: Balog on lifetime fish – Great article, Mr. Balog, on a topic which has never really received a lot of attention in the fishing press as I can recall. I'm struck by the thought that many of us have several lifetime-defining fish, whether it's our first fish (for me, a brook trout caught on a worm-baited hook out of a brushy creek) or simply memorable ones like the channel cat that almost pulled my venerable Abu Garcia 6000 out of my rod holder-less boat one night on the Red River in Manitoba or the big "something" I lost last fall trolling for walleyes on the water I now call home, The Bay of Quinte. My now passed father was a bit of a troller who instilled this advice to me about missed fish – "You only need to see the fish, otherwise you have no idea what you might have actually had on."
For a time we where trying to catch a record lake trout out of Lake Nipigon trolllng cranks before the word really got out on the lake. Long story short, we had what we thought was the record on, but after a long fight, we had a 15-pound hooked in the dorsal fin with a No. 9 Shad Rap. As I sit here typing this in my office I am reminded of a story Shaw Grigsby and Terry Scroggins wrote called "The One that Got Away" both gripping stories about loss. I believe In-Fisherman ran one about catching the world record largemouth bass called "Easy Street" if my middle-aged memory is correct.
Really enjoy your columns, Joe ... keep 'em coming!
RE: Balog on lifetime fish – Great article. By this definition my fish of a lifetime I didn't even catch. I went to the bait shop and asked what was working. The guy gave my a watermelon red fluke. I went out and on the second cast got a bite. Didn’t catch the fish, but it gave me the confidence that I could catch them.
I also caught a 12.5 last January in Headwaters Lake.
RE: Iaconelli's Elite Series return – I’ll put this in the best possible light, B.A.S.S. was the no-brainer for “Ike”. The current crop of Saturday morning “legends” aren’t going to be around forever. Going back to B.A.S.S. made the most sense going forward to be a fishing personality. Best of luck!
RE: Balog on the "hard sell" – I agree with what you are saying. I can't stand to try and watch a weigh-in anymore due to the continual "I want to take this time to thank my sponsor" plugs or having to hear about how their Skeeter/Yamaha is the only reason they are doing well in the event. It has become overkill.
It was my honor and delight to write about Aaron's B.A.S.S. wins over the years, and to interview and film him for other stories. As John Murray said, he never lost his enthusiasm for the sport, and that, plus his uncanny ability to figure out bass, was what made him such a delight to me. He was the best pure fisherman I have ever seen, and I will miss truly him.
RE: Balog on disappointing baits – I’m a ChatterBait Jackhammer underachiever. Frustrating because I enjoy throwing them. Guess I’ll keep chunking it in these clear lakes ... with stickbait handy.
RE: Martens' passing – Aaron was just a tremendous fisherman. I learned so much just watching him ... especially with the dropshot. My prayers for his wife and family.
RE: Martens' passing – It is a sad day for the world and especially the world of bass fishing. Aaron seemed truly genuine and passionate about fishing. My condolences to his family.
RE: Martens' passing – Aaron was one of a kind and left an indelible mark on not only the fishing community, but everyone he met. For as good an angler as he was, he was an even better person. He will be truly missed by everyone who knew him and followed his career. Rest In Peace.
RE: Cherry's former boat – Great article, Alan. And so glad Hank hung in there.
