With the cut to the Top 12 today at the Murray Elite Series, Terry Scroggins moves into the undisputed lead in the Toyota Trucks B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year race. After a disappointing 88th-place finish yesterday, previous leader Alton Jones slips into a temporary tie with Kevin VanDam for 2nd.
Edwin Evers was the only AOY contender to make the cut, and he did it in style with the heaviest bag of day 3. It moved Evers all the way up from 45th to 9th. If the tournament ended today, Evers would now be 4th in the AOY race. Note that even if Evers wins tomorrow, he won't gain enough points to overtake Scroggins.
To help frame the race, below is a condensed view of the points if the Murray event were to end today. Again, note that Evers is the only pro listed below who's still fishing.
Updated Points
1. Terry Scroggins -- 1490 (up 1)
2. Alton Jones (tie) -- 1471 (down 1)
2. Kevin VanDam (tie) -- 1471 (up 1)
4. Edwin Evers -- 1433 (up 1)
5. Steve Kennedy -- 1392 (down 1)
6. Ott DeFoe -- 1376
7. Dean Rojas -- 1331
The one-spot drop exhibited by Jones doesn't truly illustrate the new look of the race. Remember that Jones entered the event with a 107-point lead. Now that he trails by 19 points, it's a 126-point net gain for Scroggins.
