To those who served

All of us, at some point, have known or been touched by a veteran. Relations who served. Neighborhood folks whose combat service lies buried deep in the past. A doctor or nurse who wielded a syringe instead of a rifle. Friends who wait every day for another confirmation that their child in the desert is okay.

Today is Veteran's Day, and while our children look forward to holidays like Christmas or Easter – usually not because of what they mean, but because of what they get – we at BassFan work to teach our kids that solemn holidays like Veteran's Day, or Memorial Day, should possess just as strong a respect.

To those who served or are serving now, BassFans everywhere want to assure you that your sacrifice won't be forgotten. And we thank you for all you've done and will do in the future.

For some touching Veteran's Day reading, today's Buffalo News features stories about several local WWII veterans. The most gut-wrenching is the story of Army Capt. Charles Merton Shunstrom – the Wild Man of the Anzio Beachhead, the recipient of two Silver Stars and the French Croix de Guerre, the veteran who never truly came home. He died in 1972 a penniless, disgraced alcoholic outside a liquor store, but was recently reburied with full honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
