Lake Lanier stalwart Tom Mann Jr. figured he could win the Forrest Wood Cup on his home water if he could catch between 12 and 13 pounds each day. He did that on 2 of his 3 days on the water, but a lackluster day 1 (9-06) left him 7 ounces short when the field was cut to the Top 6 for Sunday.
"This lake fishes so unique and I knew it'd be a deal where guys were hopping around from one brushpile to the next," he said. "I had probably 500 waypoints in my GPS, but there were about 25 spots that I wanted to get to before the other guys did, not knowing whether they'd found them in practice or not.
"That first day I just fished too fast – I was always thinking about the next spot. I'd stop on a place and my mind would be on the next one already. I think I fished right through the quality fish that day and I never caught a good one.
"The next 2 days I just put my head down and fished," he continued. "That worked out real well."
