Hit 'em in the mouth

The wind isn't expected to wreak havoc at the Detroit River FLW Tour this week, but everybody knows that weather forecasts aren't always on the screws. If a strong wind does kick up and Lake Erie becomes unfishable, Great Lakes bass guide Gerry Gostenik said there will be some savvy anglers fishing within just a few miles of the launch ramp in Trenton, Mich.

"Some good bags can be caught at the mouth of the Detroit River," he said. "The fish from a lot of tournaments are released there, and some of them hang around and relate to the depressions and rockpiles."

If the weather is stable on each day of the tournament, he expects it to be won either on Erie or in the channels of the St. Clair River.

"Fishing the channels (involves) a lot of current-related stuff. The keys are little current breaks and depressions in the channels. They're one- or two-fish type spots."
