Kevin Lucas, the brother of Bassmaster Elite Series pro and world top-ranked angler Justin Lucas, earned a berth in golf's U.S. Open on Monday by topping a field of 112 players in a sectional qualifying event at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, Calif.
Lucas, a Folsom, Calif. resident who played collegiately at the University of Nevada, shot rounds of 68 and 66 to win the qualifier, which included numerous current and former PGA Tour pros, by two strokes. This year's U.S. Open will take place June 18-21 at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash.
Neither Lucas brother (Kevin is 2 years younger than Justin) is particularly adept at the other's sport. Justin often fails to break 90 on far less-demanding courses than Kevin carved up on Monday.
"He always says he's better at golf that I am at fishing," Kevin said. "When I watch him fish, that's a whole different level than anything I've ever done."
