St. Lawrence kicking out big bags

The St. Lawrence River, which will be the venue for the second-to-last Bassmaster Elite Series event of the season in August, produced massive weights over the weekend in a Renegade Bass qualifying tournament that featured many of Canada's leading anglers.

The team of former FLW Tour pro Charles Sim and longtime tournament partner Nigel Touhey won with a 27.24-pound sack. The duo actually caught 27.74, but were penalized a half-pound due to a dead fish.

“We spent the week looking for shallow-water smallmouth bass by covering a lot of shoreline and pinpointing the biggest fish we could find so we could come back to fish for them on the day of the tournament,” said Touhey. “We were pretty certain we could put together a winning bag of fish and went so far as to catch and weigh a number of the fish we pinpointed in our practice to be certain of our weight. It was probably a bit risky, but it worked out well and brought us a win on an epic day of fishing.”

The Top 19 teams in the 73-team event all weighed more than 20 pounds. For full results, click here.
