Hoyt Adjusted To Conditions

Robert Hoyt Jr. focused on the more-reliable deep bite to win the Smith Mountain Bassmaster Northern Tour.

Robert Hoyt Jr. has been a professional golfer since 2002. The James Madison University senior always figured that if he were to forge a career in pro sports, it would be on the links.

But since he beat out Mike Iaconelli, Woo Daves, David Dudley, Kota Kiriyama and a smattering of other well-known pros for top honors at the Smith Mountain Bassmaster Northern Tour, he's thinking perhaps he should spend less time on the driving range and more on the water.

"I'm not really sure if I should pursue fishing or golf," the 22-year-old said. "I always thought I was a better golfer than a fisherman, but now I don't know."

The Harrisonburg, Va. resident caught 36-14 over 3 days to edge out fellow Virginian Dudley by a single ounce. The win was easily the biggest of his career.

Here's how he did it.

Practice

Hoyt and his family moved to Harrisonburg 6 years ago, and he started fishing Smith Mountain regularly. He's on the lake about 50 days a year – primarily during the summer and other college breaks. He also has to work his excursions around his golf schedule.

He practiced 6 days for this event – 3 with a friend and 3 by himself. His father, Robert Sr., was also entered (he finished 17th), but they didn't practice together.

"We have two different fishing styles," Jr. said. "He throws a lot of crankbaits and he's more of a power fisherman. I do a lot more finesse stuff."

Weather conditions were changing daily (that trend continued throughout the tournament), so he focused on finding an off-shore pattern that would be less affected by the elements.

"More than anything, I just eliminated water. The fish that were up shallow tended to bite more sporadically, so I keyed on deeper stuff."

He was able to entice those deep-dwellers with a variety of plastics. He went with either a Carolina- or a Texas-rig, depending upon the structure in the area.

By the time practice was over, he'd pegged down about 20 productive locations.

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 12-10
> Day 2: 5, 14-07
> Day 3: 5, 9-13
> Total = 15, 36-14

A cold front had settled into the Moneta, Va. area when day 1 dawned. After a 1-hour fog delay, the field launched under bluebird skies with a chilly bite in the air.

Hoyt rotated through seven or eight of his spots and caught a 12-10 limit that put him in 5th place. He trailed the leader, Chris Dillow, by 3 pounds.

He moved into the lead on rainy day 2 as he ran all over the lake to put together his limit. It left him with a lead of a slightly more than 2 pounds over Dudley with 1 day to go.

Fierce winds that gusted to 45 mph and created 3- to 5-foot swells greeted the 118 anglers on day 3. He was able to move through about 15 spots, the last of which was Giles Creek, where both he and his father were fishing.

He was still one keeper shy of a limit with an hour to go, so his father pulled out and gave him the full run of the final stretch of untouched water. He caught a 2-pounder, and it turned out he'd need all 32 ounces.

"I knew Dudley would catch a limit, and to be honest, he was the only one I was really worried about (everyone else was at least 3 1/2 pounds back when the day began). I thought if I caught a limit around 10 pounds I'd be okay, but I was still pretty nervous.

"When we were sitting at the dock and (Dudley) saw me pull my fish out of the livewell, he said, 'Oh, you've got me by a bunch.' I guess that was true if he considers 1 ounce a bunch."

Winning Pattern Notes

Hoyt concentrated primarily on areas where creek channels entered the main lake.

"I looked for brush on the bends of channels," he said. "I knew there'd be a lot of fish around the structure on the bends."

He used two different lizards and a 10-inch worm.

"If I caught a couple and the spot seemed like it was going to go dormant, I'd switch baits and maybe catch one or two more. If I was making long casts, I'd use the Carolina rig because I could feel the bites better. If I was throwing to a bluff wall or something like that, I'd use the Texas rig."

Winning Gear Notes

> Carolina-rig gear: 7'6" medium-heavy G.Loomis or RPM rod, Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris Signature Series casting reel (6.3:1 gear ratio), 17- or 20-pound Bass Pro Shops XPS fluorocarbon line (main line and 2- to 3-foot leader), 3/8- to 3/4-ounce unnamed titanium sinker, red glass bead followed by a ticker, another bead and a barrel swivel, 4/0 Gamakatsu or Owner worm hook, 6" Salt Willy lizard (green-pumpkin).

> Texas-rig gear: Same rods, reel, line and hooks, 3/8-ounce unnamed titanium weight, 9-inch Mann's Jelly Worm (red) or 6-inch Zoom Lizard (white).

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – "Just sticking to my own game plan and not getting away from my strengths."

> Performance edge – "I'd say that XPS fluorocarbon – it's just so sensitive and you can feel bites so much better than with mono. Fishing worms and plastics, I feel that really helped a lot."

Notable

> Hoyt hopes to qualify for the Nationwide Tour (golf's triple-A circuit) next year.

> He's a business management major at JMU.
