Okeechobee Southern Tour
Niggemeyer Moves To Top

Friday, January 27, 2006

James Niggemeyer made a late move that paid off handsomely on day 2 of the Okeechobee Bassmaster Southern Tour.

James Niggemeyer decided to expand his primary water just a little bit this afternoon at Lake Okeechobee, and it was a fortuitous move. He caught his second 7-pounder of the day and went on to weigh in a 23-00 sack. The Texan leads the Okeechobee Bassmaster Southern Tour by more than 3 pounds with a 2-day total of 40-10.

Day 1 leader Terry Scroggins of Florida fell to 2nd with 12-15 today for a 37-04 total. North Carolina's Rodney Sorrell (22-01, 35-00) is 3rd, followed by Florida's Mark Lamb (23-08, 34-05) and South Carolina's Marty Robinson (15-12, 34-05), who are tied for 4th.

Here's the rest of the Top 10:

6. Eric Nethery: 33-10
7. (tie) Chris Lane: 33-02
7. (tie) Jimmy Mason: 33-02
9. Randy Yager: 31-10
10. Clark Reehm: 28-14

The wind blew a bit harder than it did on day 1 (gusts reached about 30 mph), but weights went up a bit, perhaps due in part to some sporadic cloud cover that produced a mild drizzle for awhile. The Weather Channel forecast for tomorrow predicts partly cloudy skies with a high of 75 degrees and winds out of the east to 14 mph. There's a 20% chance of rain.

The field was cut to the Top 50 after today's weigh-in. Weights will carry over through tomorrow.

Niggemeyer Hits Paydirt

By the time mid-afternoon rolled around, Niggemeyer had flipped up a 7-pounder and a solid limit that would have topped 15 pounds. He was in no danger of missing the cut, but he had a couple of small fish and decided to try cull at least one of them in a different area not far from his primary spot.

The slight gamble paid off and he rolled another 7 – a 7-10, to be exact.

"That fish came out of some water where I'd had a few little bites in practice, but nothing really great," he said. "Those big bites are so key here. Take away those two, and that's 15 pounds right there."

He has a backup plan if his main water fails to produce like it has over the first 2 days, but he has confidence that his hot spot will hold out. "I feel like there's a bunch more in there because of the way it's positioned on the lake," he said. "It can replenish quite quickly. If I leave there, I don't think my chances of winning will be as good.

"I think the biggest fish in my backup area might be about 4 pounds. I can catch fish quicker there, but the quality isn't the same."

He admitted that he's a bit anxiety-prone at times and hopes he can get a decent night's sleep before he attempts to secure the biggest win of his career tomorrow.

"Anyone in the Top 10 has a chance because of the quality of the fish here," he said. "I'm not really worried, just excited."

Scroggins Fought Crowd

Scroggins, in 2nd, said he and Mason had their primary spot pretty much to themselves yesterday. After they weighed in the two biggest bags on day 1, it wasn't too surprising that they had lots of company today.

"We had a lot of people in there," he said. "I'll just have to go hit some new water tomorrrow."

He caught only about a dozen keepers today – down from 30-plus on day 1. His bag was respectable, but he didn't get the two big bites like he did yesterday. He didn't even get one.

"They were all just average fish," he said. "I think the combination of the fishing pressure and the wind held me back a little bit."

He figures he'll need to catch 20 to 25 pounds tomorrow to win. "This is a luck tournament," he said. "It all boils down to who gets the big bite."

Two Lunkers for Lamb

Lamb, who's tied for 4th, also caught a pair of giants, and his duo actually trumped Niggemeyer's. They weighed 8-12 and 8-07.

He went to the Cornfields yesterday, but opted to stay in Moonshine Bay along with everybody else today. "The water down there wasn't too good and I just couldn't catch them," he said. "I fished up here (in Moonshine) in the Stren Series (3 weeks ago) and was on good fish, but I just couldn't do anything right and I didn't get the bites. Then I practiced here one day last week and caught them real good again."

Neither of the big ones bit early – he caught one at 11:00 and the other at 3:00. "Two fish that size will take you up real quick," he said.

A similar bag tomorrow is a possibility, he said. "I didn't fish the area too hard. I was in and out and in and out three or four different times. Plus, there's nobody around me."

Robinson Still in Hunt

Robinson, also tied for 4th, pounded his reedy area for another good limit that kept him within striking distance of the lead. He's more than 5 1/2 pounds back, but that's just one good bite here.

A 6 1/2-pounder was his biggest fish today. "I flipped and threw a spinnerbait a little bit, and I caught about what I figured I would," he said. "The wind hurt me a little bit.

"I think I've got a shot. I'll probably need about 20 pounds, and that's possible."

He said he'll switch to a lily-pad pattern if his reed patch peters out.

Notable

> Day 2 stats: 129 anglers, 82 limits (eight fewer than yesterday), 6 zeroes (same as yesterday).

> Lamb was 58th in the Okeechobee Southeastern Stren with 18-13. "I caught the numbers – I probably caught 30 fish both days – but I didn't get the right bites."

> Nethery moved up 86 places today with a 27-11 sack, easily the biggest of the first 2 days. He had an 8-15 brute that was today's biggest fish. That fish alone outweighed his day 1 bag by 3 pounds.

> There was a tie for 50th place, but Tennessee's Jack Wade made the cut and Alabama's Bruce Brown didn't. Wade weighed in 10 fish to Brown's eight, and that was the tiebreaker.
