Erie/Niagara Northern Open
Costabille Still Barely On Top

Friday, June 25, 2004

Gaspare Costabille had another good limit today, but still has a small lead.

Bad weather? Forget it. The dire predictions for today's weather never happened, as light winds this morning gave way to essentially calm conditions. Those conditions hurt some anglers, helped others and for some it seemed to make no difference. Foremost among the latter is Gaspare Costabille, who caught 19-03 today for 39-11 total and the lead for the second day in a row.

Same as yesterday, that lead is over Ohio's Frank Scalish, who had 19-02 today for 38-06 total. Scalish is only 1 ounce farther out of the lead than he was yesterday, and 1-05 isn't much, especially here.

Connecticut's Chris Bielert climbed from 5th into 3rd with 16-15 for 34-14 total, Maryland's Aaron Hastings dropped one spot to 4th with 16-02 today for 34-10 total, and Peter Thliveros moved up from 8th to 5th with 17-05 today for 34-06 total.

The 50th-place cut spot is occupied by three anglers tied for 48th with 25-09.

Costabille Confident

Like many anglers, Costabille had a slower bite today, saying that it was an hour or more between each fish. He noted: "I culled about a half a dozen or more fish today, and I dropped a couple of nice ones at the boat, so I know there will be fish there tomorrow."

He fished the same spot the same way – tubes on 1/4- and 3/8-ounce jigheads – and will stick with it tomorrow.

> He finished 3rd in this event last year.

Scalish: Longer To Get 5 Today

Photo: Bassmaster.com
Frank Scalish hasn't fished his spot to the max yet.

"It was beautiful (weather) today, but it was harder for me," Scalish said. "Yesterday I pulled up on my place, made five drifts, caught my five and left. Today I had to work them for a while. With a drift, you can cover more of an area in a shorter amount of time. But today I had to make casts to hit specific boulders."

He noted that he's fishing "very deep," and it's "kind of hard to pinpoint where (his spots) are. I dropped buoys by them, but with the current and wind, by the time I get to them they could be 20 feet away." He explained that he's fishing by the Niagara River, with a "huge amount of current. When you drop a buoy, there's an eddy behind it."

He's hunting quality fish, so is sacrificing numbers of bites. "I have some shallow breaks where you can catch 60 a day, but they're all 2-pounders. I'm not monkeying around with that. I don't want to catch 50 fish to get a 3-pounder."

On tomorrow, he said: "I'm crossing my fingers – I hope that five come." Could he win? "Anything could happen, but the quality of bites I'm getting is good. If I can get a nice kicker fish and continue to catch the weight I'm watching, I could catch (Costabille)."

He added: "I don't know the full potential of the area I'm fishing. I'm petrified to hurt it because I found it the last practice day."

Hastings: No GPS, but Decent Day

"My GPS went out on me first thing this morning, and I had a hard day of fishing," Hastings said. "I was fishing blind." But he still managed to catch a good limit because he knew the general area he was fishing in.

"Yesterday I had about 6 spots in that area, and I'd go from spot to spot on the trolling motor and catch them right around there. Today I knew where (those spots) were, but I couldn't fish them exact. I tried to do the same thing, but I wasted too much time going from the front to the back of boat to see where I was."

He added: "By the time I got all the bugs out of my head, trying to fix the GPS, I wasted a good hour of (the good first 2-hour) bite. That hurt me, but I made good decisions (after that)."

He's 5-01 out of 1st, but said that tomorrow he'll finally be in an early draw, which should help him. "Without a brain fart or something, I think I should do fine. If I can catch between 17 and 20 pounds tomorrow, I'll be happy with my performance."

> Today he had 10 keepers total, all smallmouths.

Correia: Back In Rotation

Danny Correia was in 4th yesterday with 18-05, but today managed just 11-01 to fall 20 places to 24th. "The wind laid down, I had a little bit of heavy traffic around the area I was fishing and I didn't capitalize on the big bites I had," he said. "I had them on and lost them. They were biting funny – you could reel them almost all the way up to the boat, and then they'd come off."

On the heavy traffic in his area, he said he was fishing a shoal and the big fish were "all on one piece of the shoal." Yesterday he'd drift down and catch a good one, and other anglers in the area would see it and then line up right behind him for the next drift. So he'd move over to a less-productive area and fish that. "When they'd get in a rhythm out there, then I'd come in shallow and catch a 4-pounder, and they'd gas up and come over," he said. Then he'd move to a different spot and start the parade all over again. Today it wasn't as bad without the wind, but he was in an early flight and a dozen boats were there when he got there.

He felt that the lack of sun today also hurt him. "You really need the sun for those big smallmouths. The early flights hardly had anything, but in the last few flights everyone had 15 to 20 pounds. The sun came out around 1:00-1:30, and they killed them. I couldn't believe how many giant sacks they caught."

Tomorrow he's going to stick to what he's been doing, which he thinks will work better with fewer people out there. "Some big ones are still there," he noted.

> Fellow tour pro Pete Gluszek is fishing the same stuff, and caught 19-06 today to move up to 7th.

Notable

> Kotaro Kiriyama moved up to 11th today thanks to having the only 20-plus sack of the day: 21-06.

> Day 2 stats – 173 anglers, 141 limits (20 more than yesterday), 8 zeroes (same as yesterday) – 101 anglers had limits both days.

> Hastings noted that when he went over a wave yesterday, his depthfinder measure a 9-foot fluctuation in depth.
