Classic Words

For me, the first day of the Bassmaster Classic is about words. Words like:

Cull

Can you cull a dead fish in Florida? Not according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission website. But I think I saw an angler do just that. Moot point: He got the DQ for profane language and (in part) destroying the running light on his boat.

Angst

We had a rule on a baseball team I coached that you needed to keep your emotions in check at all times. One of those lessons that life can teach through sports. The kids were 6 and 7 years old, and they kept it pretty much within the white lines on that one.

Why can't one of the best bass fishermen in the world do the same? Especially when kids are watching. We need our kids to have good role models in our sport, right? One Ikeburst negates 14 Denny Brauers, or something like that.

Flag

That was, in case you did not see it, the U.S. flag attached to that running light thrown over the side (see above). Hip-hop and how that plays to the younger fan being one thing - I'll take the word of the spiky hairs that like that thing - I can say this: When there are people out there dying for us (how many just today?) I'll be damned if I'll sit by and watch a bass angler throw a baby fit and toss the U.S. flag in the water. Stupid is as stupid does, and that was stupid.

Apology

I apologize for my use of rough language above, but that really burns my biscuits.

Less

As in Citgo-less. There are a few Citgo signs here and there, but where is Citgo? Apparently somewhere else because Citgo is certainly not here at the show.

I guess a news journalist should buzz them up, ask a few questions. But I'm an opinion writer, and in my opinion a Citgo-less Classic is weird. Sort of an Aunt with no Jemimah. A sloppy with no Joe, peanut with no butter.

Crowd

A good crowd for a Friday, better than I would have guessed.

Hogs

Everyone caught them today. The one-bite difference is in play: You get a limit, you get one or two good bites, you're in the hunt. Don't and you're middle of the pack.

More tomorrow.
