Swimbait Worked Across Trio Of Spots For Neece

Jim Neece Jr. fully expected to be sore and worn out from casting and winding an umbrella rig for multiple days at the Lake Chickamauga Central FLW Series last weekend. Turns out he’s feeling pretty good since all he needed was a single swimbait.

Neece Jr., the father of current FLW Pro Circuit angler Corey Neece, dialed in a trio of spots along the main river channel where pre-spawn largemouth were ganging up near current breaks. He sacked 18-plus pounds on days 1 and 2 before salting away his first FLW victory with a 20-09 stringer on day 3 to finish with 57-05.

“It’s really exciting,” said Neece Jr. “It means so much because my dad taught me to fish. My son fishes the Tackle Warehouse Tour and we support him out on the road, so to win this was pretty special.”

Even more special was the way he established his most effective pattern. Last year, Neece relied on an umbrella rig to finish 37th in the Central FLW Series event at Chickamauga, which was held later in March. He anticipated it would be an effective tool again last week, especially with dirty water.

“It was prime time for a rig,” he said. “I went with the intentions to throw it and threw it for a day and a half in practice and never caught a bass.”

Meanwhile, his practice partner, his dad, Jim Neece Sr., had a single swimbait rigged on a jighead tied on. When he couldn’t generate any bites while his dad was seeing sporadic activity, Neece Jr. opted to simplify his technique as well.

“That got the wheels turning,” Neece said.

By the time the competition got rolling, Neece was content with just a couple rods on his deck. That’s how committed he was to the swimbait game plan.

“Usually, I’m one to mix it up, but that was all I had confidence in,” he said. “Even my co-anglers commented about me not having more rods out. I just felt like it was the only way I’d have a chance.”

Won The Mental Battle

Neece said the biggest challenge was not being intimidated by some of the names he was competing against. In addition to a field packed with Tennessee River experts, Dayton, Tenn., natives and Chickamauga stalwarts Andy Morgan and Michael Neal hurried home from a Bass Pro Tour event in Florida to compete on their home water. Fellow BPT anglers Jacob Wheeler, Justin Atkins, John Murray and Wesley Strader were also in the field.

“There were some heavy hitters I was up against,” he said. “The weather was a big challenge as well with the current pushing at 4 to 5 miles per hour. It made it hard to find fish.”

He didn’t venture into any creeks or coves. He remained on the main river and battled the current each day while he hammered away at three isolated spots – points and ledges all within five miles of the launch ramp – that had groups of fish on them.

His confidence bait all week was a 5-inch Zoom Swimmer in chartreuse blue rigged on a half-ounce jig head. To fish it effectively in the current, he relied on not only the Spot Lock feature on his Minn Kota Ultrex trolling motor but also the 8:1 gear ratio on his Abu Garcia Revo EXD casting reel.

Neece practiced all day Monday and didn’t catch a bass. He was on track to go all day Tuesday without a bass bite as well until he went to the single swimbait presentation. By mid-morning on his third day of practice, Neece said he figured out the fish, at least on the main channel, were relating to current breaks in 8 to 10 feet of water.

“I knew that’s what I would do,” he said. “It didn’t take long. It was just a matter of whether it was something that would last three days.”

With the current ripping pretty consistently throughout the event and the water actually rising toward the end of the tournament, Neece said the consistent conditions were a key to his success on all three spots.

“All three places were main river points where the current ran into them,” he said. “You could only make one cast on each spot to get bit.”

Combining the right cast with the right retrieve was ultimately the critical component to his presentation.

“Typically, I like to slow roll swimbaits, but the current was so fast I had to go to the higher speed reel to make the bait swim right in that current,” he said.

Consistency Paid Off

Knowing the potential for a massive stringer existed under the pre-spawn conditions, Neece was pleasantly surprised to be in sixth place with 18-11 on day 1 when he caught roughly four limits of keepers.

“To have 18 and be in sixth with the caliber of the field, I was excited,” he said.

He was even more enthused when he backed it up with 18-01 on day 2 to make the top-10 cut in second place, just 10 ounces behind Brian Elder, who’d walloped 25-04 on day 2. His catch numbers dipped a bit, but the consistency was still there across all three spots.

“I was going by seat of my pants,” Neece said. “I left when I felt it was time. I would stay for an hour without a bite and then, boom, I’d catch a good one. I had a bunch of confidence going into the final day because (Elder) only had 12 pounds on day 1. He had a good day 2, but I knew he could have another 12-pound day.”

Neece’s first spot on day 3 fizzled out and forced him to shift his attention to the other two spots. He left his best spot with one keeper at 10:30. He bagged a 12-inch spotted bass and a 7-pound largemouth on the next spot to settle his nerves.

“That got the fire back in me to figure out what was happening,” he said. “I never went back to the first hole. My gut told me it was done. The key decision was to leave. I concentrated on those second- and third-string holes and caught a big one off each one of them.”

Winning Pattern Notes

> Neece said he kept his boat positioned over the deeper part of the channel, often in 20 to 30 feet of water. He would then cast up onto the shallower ledge and retrieve the bait back off the point.

“They were getting it as soon as it’d come off into the channel,” he said.
