Move over, smallmouth. For two days, Lake Champlain’s largemouth have taken center stage. The only question is for how long.

After day 1 of the FLW Tour regular-season finale showed the largemouth in the Ticonderoga area on the south end of Champlain were a legitimate option for this event, they continued to be major players on day 2, even with more boat pressure. Reports said more than 50 boats made the hour-plus run down to “Ti” to fish for largemouth; far more than the 10 or so that were down there in the opening round.

Yet, despite the added boat traffic, Tyler Stewart continued to pace the field. The Louisiana pro said he got more bites today, though he didn’t get any giants as he did on day 1. Still, his 17-14 bag was enough to make him the lone pro to crack the 40-pound mark at the midway point, with 40-01.

More than half of the top 10 has joined him down south, including local Daryl Biron (3rd with 38-03) and Casey Scanlon (5th with 37-11). Hensley Powell (4th with 38-02), Nick LeBrun (8th with 37-00) and Tom Reddington (9th with 36-15) are also predominantly fishing for largemouth.

Meanwhile, John Voyles continues to pace the smallmouth contingent, as he’s milked a shallow staging area for 38-12 to put him in 2nd. And behind him is Austin Felix, who continues to show he’s one of the best spawning-smallmouth fisherman on tour. He’s comfortably in 6th with 37-11.

AJ Slegona is in seventh with 37-05, while the winner of the last two Costa Series events on Champlain, Ron Nelson, sits in 10th with 36-11.

Yet, as the tour heads into the final weekend of its regular season, all eyes will be on Stewart. Not only has the young pro never led a tour event, he’s never made a top 10.

“To be leading this event for two days now, it’s crazy,” Stewart admits. “It’s a dream come true.”

And so far, it’s been a dream scenario for him.

Stewart has been keying on very specific spots that are current-related. In fact, many of them are one-cast spots where missing the precise casts means not getting bit. But when he gets bit, it’s most often a good one.

His starting spot today coughed up 5- and 5 1/2-pounders on day 1, and today it quickly produced a 4-pounder. From there he quickly put together a 16-pound limit, though it wasn’t until around 1:30 p.m. that he was able to make one final cull to get to nearly 18 pounds.

Yet, Ti is known to crush dreams, and reports of a local weekend tournament going out of that area and stronger winds forecasted for Saturday and Sunday could do just that. Still, Stewart has no plans on changing.

“I don’t care if Hurricane Harvey hits tomorrow,” Stewart said. “I’m going to Ticonderoga.”

The same may not be said for Biron.

“I’m not sure what I’m going to do tomorrow,” said Biron, who considers Champlain his home lake. “I know this lake well enough to catch largemouth up north, but I always like Ti best.

“I just worry about the boat traffic. A lot of the banks in Ti are clay, and that much wave action could muddy up the banks and ruin my pattern. I need clear water. So, we’ll see. Maybe the winds will make the decision for me.”

John Voyles caught enough big smallmouth to maintain his hold on 2nd place.

While he’s comfortable targeting green fish around the inland sea area – Biron says he always targets largemouth on Champlain when he can – the bite down in Ti has been almost too good to abandon.

He figures he shook off 150 bites throughout practice, and if not for some lost fish, he might be blowing this tournament away.

“I’ve had some good fortune and some misfortune,” Biron said. “I’ve lost a 5-pounder, two 4 1/2-pounders and a 4-pounder. I should be well over 40-pounds right now, but with how I’m fishing, lost fish are going to happen.”

Not surprisingly, he’s tight-lipped as to the specifics of his pattern, but he did shed some insight into why largemouth have been prevalent this tournament.

“When the water got up like it did, it really opened up some areas,” Biron said. “In fact, if it had stayed up (it’s dropped a foot in the last week), you would’ve really seen the largemouth bite go. Still, the water level has the largemouth set up where they’re easier to find than usual.”

Of course, that doesn’t matter to Voyles. He’s banking that the less risky smallmouth he’s targeting will eventually pay off.

Just as he did on day 1, the Indiana pro milked a shallow area in about 1 1/2 feet of water, where both pre- and post-spawn smallies have been staging. Unfortunately, he feels more of those staging fish are heading to spawn and not enough post-spawn fish are coming out.

“There were not near as many fish there today as yesterday,” Voyles said. “I’m seeing a bunch up shallow cruising and not in the eating mood, so I may have to move out a little deeper.”

Admittedly, he’d much rather be using a mixture of three baits to target the staging fish as opposed to going after spawners. But if the baitfish don’t reappear on his spot like they were on day 1 – he watched some unknown school flicking the surface all morning – he may have to adapt.

“I’m not some spawning smallmouth expert by any means,” Voyles said. “So I hope I don’t have to do it, but if I do, I do.”

AOY Update

John Cox is not giving up on Angler of the Year without a fight, and he survived today by 2 ounces to have another shot at it on day 3.
As it stands, David Dudley is in the driver’s seat to capture the AOY title, which would be an FLW Tour-record fourth points crown. He’s sitting in 12th with 36-04.

Meanwhile, Cox needed to make the top-30 cut to stay alive for another day (though, Joseph Webster still would’ve had a shot by making the cut). Cox managed to do that by hanging on to 30th place.

That may make things quite interesting tomorrow, as on stage he mentioned he figured something out late in the day that had him extremely excited if he made it to Saturday. Now that he has, he'll attempts to complete the comeback for his first AOY.
