Tim Klinger is no stranger to winning big-money tournaments, but doing it close to home is always a little sweeter.

His Western Division FLW Series win at Lake Mead over the weekend will go down as a typical pre-spawn grind at the massive desert reservoir, but it was fueled by his decision on the final day to not fight the windy conditions in making a long run back to the Overton Arm for a third straight day. Instead, the Boulder City, Nev., resident stayed on the lower end and caught his only limit of the tournament that weighed 15-04 – topped by only Brett Leber’s 15-12 haul on day 1 – and allowed him to rally from 6th place to capture his third career FLW win.

His 34-12 total for three days was nearly 5 pounds better than runner-up Lane Olson, the only other competitor to eclipse 30 pounds.

“This ranks right up there with Beaver,” Klinger said, referencing his victory at the 2004 Walmart Open at Beaver Lake, which carried a top prize of $200,000. “Obviously, the money is a lot different than a Tour win, but in my opinion, it’s right there with winning at Beaver Lake. That was super special. They’re similar in some ways, but to win at home means everything.”

After relying on a flipping pattern the first two days, Klinger did most of his damage on the final day with a spinnerbait, taking advantage of the conditions to tap into the reaction-bait bite. That adjustment was just par for the course at Mead, where fishing at this time of year can be exceedingly challenging.

“Even though I’m a local, Mead is the most level playing field there is,” Klinger said. “Rick Clunn has said it multiple times. It’s because it’s always changing between the water levels and everything else. It’s tough. You hardly ever see locals win big tournaments here. It’s happened, but it’s very tough to win three- or four-day events. I’ve made a few top 10s, but it’s hard to seal the deal.”

Looked for Backup Plans

Klinger had his mind made up where he was going to concentrate his efforts even prior to launching his boat for pre-tournament practice, so he devoted three days of practice to scouting out other potential patterns or areas if conditions suddenly changed.

“The week prior, we’d had a bunch of snow and I think it’s been 10 years since we had that kind of snow,” he said. “The water temperatures usually don’t get below 50, but it was in the high 40s for a few days, so that was a big curveball.”

Having won other local tournaments during the winter there gave him an idea of what he should be doing, but with the cold front and the water level on the rise, he was skeptical it would work.

“There was more brush in the water that I like to flip because the fish like moving into that stuff,” he added.

He only generated a few bites over the three days as he didn’t want to tip off any other competitors as to where and how he planned to fish in the tournament.

“It was tricky because a lot of guys were fishing the Echo Overton arm and it makes it difficult with so many guys,” he said. “It worked out good, though, because the fish were biting well up there. There were not a lot of limits caught, but they were biting. I think the fishing pressure led to guys not catching limits.”

Veteran Move

Klinger spent days 1 and 2 up the Overton Arm, going the first 90 minutes of day 1 without a bite on a crankbait along a stretch of rocky bank with brush on it. Eventually, he came upon a row of willow trees and that’s where he wound up flipping his four keepers that day on a 1/2-ounce jig tipped with a Super Pork Bubba Frog trailer, which he favors over soft plastic trailers when the water temps are below 55 degrees.

“I stayed in one little area, maybe a 100-yard stretch,” he said. “I had to share it with two other guys, but they were out fishing in 10 feet of water where the old tree line was with worms.”

He scratched out four fish for 9-08 and went back to the same stretch on Friday. He endured a much slower morning, but still tacked on four more largemouth for 9-15 to make the top-10 cut in 6th place with 19-08.

“I told myself I’d flip all day and that’s pretty much what I did, but I didn’t get a bite until after 1 o’clock,” he said. “Then within 20 minutes, I caught those four. The fish seemed to be grouped up in tight areas.”

Most of the water where he was catching fish was 7 to 8 feet deep around secondary points and in secondary pockets with brush.

Facing a 5 1/2-pound deficit heading into the final day, he saw the forecast for Saturday called for high winds and decided to call an audible.

“I knew it would be windy and I knew the other guys were going back up there,” he said. “I knew it had been pounded and I knew one of the areas I know well hadn’t gotten much pressure all week, so I made the decision to stay down in the lower basin.”

It turned out to be a master stroke.

The first pocket he went into, he caught a keeper smallmouth on a spinnerbait. A little while later, a 3-pound largemouth fell for his double-willow white spinnerbait. After 45 minutes without a bite, he made another move and caught another 3-pounder. He fished an outside point and picked off another smallmouth. By 8:30 a.m., he had four keepers – matching his day-long total from days 1 and 2 – and a significant head start on the rest of the finalists.

“That was the major factor for me,” he said. “With the weigh-in at 2 pm, that meant I’d have to leave (Overton Arm) at 12:30. On day 2, I didn’t get a bite until 10 after 1. I rolled the dice staying down on the lower end.”

He finished his limit around 9:30 and caught another five keepers the rest of the way. Still, he figured he was well short of what he needed to challenge for the win.

“I figured I needed at least 17 to win,” he said. “It was a grind the whole day, but then I started upgrading.”

He lost a big fish later in the day that left him deflated.

“I got four cranks into my retrieve, then it spit my spinnerbait like it had never been hooked,” he added. “When that happened, I thought I blew it.”

Turns out his day-3 stringer was the only one heavier than 11-02 and it was more than enough to erase the day-2 deficit – and then some.

“What surprised me is I knew I had a shot with 15 pounds, but I was shocked that I did win,” he said. “Under the conditions, in my opinion any of those guys could’ve caught 15 pounds.”
