Hensley Powell has had himself quite an FLW Series season so far – and it’s not even May.

After finishing 5th in the Southeastern Division points, highlighted by a 3rd-place showing at Lake Seminole in early March, he knew he’d secured a spot in the FLW Series championship later this fall as well as an invitation to fish the FLW Tour in 2019.

Now, he said, it was time to go after a win, knowing the financial windfall would help set him up for next season.

“I told myself if I win one, I’ll fish the Tour for sure,” Powell said.

His quest didn’t take long.

Powell, a resident of Whitwell, Tenn., is a fishing guide on the Tennessee River and also does on-the-water classes for anglers seeking to learn more about using their electronics. He’d never seen Table Rock Lake in person prior to last week. After catching 40-12 over three days there, he left the Ozarks on Sunday and headed back home accompanied by a trophy that had “CHAMPION” emblazoned across it.

It sounds improbable, especially considering he was up against several Table Rock stalwarts, including Mike McClelland and Stacey King, but his modest 11-07 stringer on the final day (one of only three limits caught by the 10 finalists) was enough to edge McClelland by 1 1/2 pounds.

“I’ve been 2nd or 3rd or 4th or 5th so much, that’s just where I expected to be,” he said. “I had 11 pounds and figured I’d need 14 or 15. I noticed it was tougher from how my fish were acting, but I still figured I’d be 2nd or 3rd.”

He was surprised he won and is now positioned to approach the remaining tournaments with a go-for-broke mentality.

“It feels great,” Powell said. “I’ve had a really good year and should’ve won Seminole. I had the fish on to win. I was thinking that was my shot, but I came down here and found a really strong pattern. I knew going in I had a good shot at winning.”

‘Just Had That Feeling’

When he got to Table Rock, Powell was looking to shift out of the conservative mode he adopted at Santee Cooper (the third Southeastern Division tournament) in an effort to protect his place in the Southeastern Division points standings.

He immediately felt comfortable in the Ozarks.

“I grew up on the Tennessee River and the last two or three years, I’ve had a learning curve fishing in Florida, but I feel good there now,” he said. “Going out there, I related it to lakes here like Center Hill, Tims Ford, Dale Hollow. That seemed to work out for me.”

On the first day of practice, he fished the lower end of the lake, but figured the best he could do there was about 12 pounds. The following day, he ran up the White River arm and quickly discovered that fish were loaded in the backs of certain pockets, presumably waiting to move in to spawn. He liked what he saw.

“It felt like it was just meant to be. I just had that feeling,” he said.

Targeting those fish that were staged in 10 to 12 feet of water with an umbrella rig, he caught 18 to 19 pounds on the remaining practice days when he was on the water. On the Monday prior to the tournament starting, a snowstorm and 30-mph winds moved in, so he opted to stay off the water. The next day, he checked the James River for the same pattern he found in the White, but came up empty. He moved back to the White and found more of what he’d found two days prior.

“I could call my shot where they were at,” he said.

He skipped going on the water the day before competition to rest. His prep work, he felt, was done.

“I knew what I was going to do,” he said. “I could run new water every day and keep catching them.”

White was Right

Powell made a 40-minute run to the White River all three days and concentrated on a 6-mile stretch of water. It didn’t let him down, although his weights did drop off with each successive day. He attributes that to the fish being in the midst of their final move toward the spawning areas. He thinks that snowstorm was a blessing in disguise for his pattern.

“I was thankful for the snow because I was scared they were going to move up and that might’ve delayed them,” he said. “During the tournament, they were moving up. I caught numbers, but the big ones had moved up.”

While others seemed to focus on points with hard baits, Powell remained focused on the backs of coves and pockets.

“I probably fished 30 coves a day and could go right to the back of the cove and know where they were going to be,” he said.

He caught a mix of largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass throughout the tournament with the largemouth coming off areas that had mixed rock and gravel. The smallmouth seemed to prefer pea gravel or solid gravel bottoms.

“I ran a lot of short pockets, but they didn’t have many fish in them,” he said. “I ran some bigger coves, but had to go to the last third and fish the last 80 to 100 yards, then it was on to the next one.”

The fish typically were in the last deeper water (10 to 12 feet) before the pocket flattened out. A deliberate presentation with the umbrella rig was a must and many times, he had to make multiple casts before a fish would commit.

“I was reeling super slow and sometimes they’d bite it, but sometimes I had to throw six times,” he said. “A lot of fish took three throws.”

By the morning of the final day, he was so tuned in to what the fish were doing, he started moving further back with them. He’d frequently idle past other boats to get to the back of the pocket while other times, he’d wait for a boat to leave so he didn’t interfere with their program.

“I never worried about anybody being back there,” he said. “It was pretty awesome. I’d wait until they got out of the way, then go in the back and catch ‘em.”

The one-presentation theme also was a welcome development. He caught a few on a jerkbait down the river, but never one that he weighed in.

“I always say if I have one rod, I’m going to win,” he said. “I had one rod out and knew where to throw it so I felt pretty good.”

Winning Gear Notes

> Umbrella rig gear: 7’6” heavy-action Cashion Fishing Rods casting rod, Lew’s BB-1 Speed Spool casting reel, 20-pound Vicious fluorocarbon line, YUM YUMbrella Flash Mob Jr., 1/4-oz. Trixster Custom Baits jigheads, Zoom Swimming Fluke Jr. (white ice).

> Powell outfitted the bottom two and middle wires with jigheads and put dummy heads (hookless) on the top two wires.

> In practice, he used belly-weighted swimbait hooks, but was missing fish that would slap at the his baits. That’s part of the reason he switched to open-hook jigheads in the tournament.

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – “I got on a pattern and it was working so good. It was do or die. I’ve qualified for the (2019) Tour and (this year’s) FLW Series championship so I was going for the win here.”

> Performance edge – “My Lowrance electronics. Not knowing the lake, once I figured out where the fish were, I could use the map to see where I needed to be. I couldn’t have done it without that. I ran new water just by looking at the map. I knew I needed 12 feet in the back of a cove.”
