There's just something about Ross Barnett Reservoir that meshes with Stephen Browning's fishing style. In five Bassmaster tournaments at the Mississippi fishery prior to last week, Browning had not finished outside the top 30. In the two most recent Central Opens there, in 2013 and 2015, he finished 2nd and 5th, respectively.

It was only a matter of time before all the stars aligned in his favor.

Last week, he encountered Ross Barnett just as the female bass were starting to push in toward their spawning grounds where their male counterparts eagerly awaited. He targeted the outside edge of an eelgrass stretch and when a cold front came through the Jackson, Miss., area, it stunted their migration just long enough for Browning to stage an impressive rally over the final two days of the first Bassmaster Central Open of 2018.

He changed to some heavier-duty tackle after day 1 and caught 16-01 on day 2 to jump from 36th to 5th, then tacked on 16-08 on the final day to win his third career Open with a 3-day total of 44-00.

"The year I had last year was not very stellar, but when I looked at the Elite and Central Opens (schedules) this year, I had good vibes," Browning said. "It didn't start well at (Lake) Martin, but I was just one good bite away. I fished well and did not make any bad decisions. I just had a lot of confidence going to Ross Barnett and I felt like the area I chose to fish had winning potential."

He said the area he fished in the mid-lake section saw plenty of fishing pressure throughout the event, but his decision to stay off the bank and pick off fish holding in the grass was crucial to his success. So, too, was the arrival of a cold front on day 1. That seemed to halt the Florida-strain bass from going any further and kept them in his crosshairs for the duration.

"The front could not have come at a more opportune time for somebody back in the field to make a move," he said. "It just stalled them. It was crazy because every fish on days 2 and 3 had my bait in the crushers. It got me thinking, 'How am I not getting any more bites?' I had figured I'd get 10 to 12 bites each day."

As it happened, he had about half that each of the last two days.

"Growing up, I fished lower Arkansas River and the backwaters in the spring reminds me of Ross Barnett," he said. "Where those fish will come and stage, there's a lot of obvious stuff to look at, but the non-obvious stuff is key there. I can relate from growing up how those fish move off the main lake to their spawning areas."

Here is a rundown of how he pulled off a 36th-to-1st comeback.

Practice

Browning put in three days of practice ahead of the tournament and despite his experience there, tried to treat it as a new lake.

"I chose my normal route, which was check the lower end first, then the middle of the lake, then up the river," Browning said. "The middle part seemed to be where I had the majority of bites and I felt like it would set up better."

He tried to develop a pattern away from the crowds of boats and got dialed in on the outer edge of an eelgrass stretch with 4 feet of water on the outside. He fished the same general area three years ago, but the vegetation was mostly small lily pads and pad stems.

His son, Beau, and his high school fishing partner were entered as co-anglers so they were along on Tuesday when Browning discovered the pre-spawn fish hanging out in the eelgrass.

"It was cool to explain to them my thinking and they were excited for me because they were part of the process," he added. "I concentrated away from everything, similar to how Gene Bishop won (in 2015). I got away from the crowd and looked for eelgrass. That tells me it's a hard bottom. I got on my big engine and idled to where I found the edge of the eelgrass, then I went back out and did it again."

Eventually, he had a line of waypoints along the outer edge and he knew with the warming water and full moon coming between days 1 and 2 that if the big females were coming, that's where they'd stop.

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 11-07
> Day 2: 5, 16-01
> Day 3: 5, 16-08
> Total = 15, 44-00

Amidst the clouds and rain on day 1, Browning had plenty of bites on, but his execution was poor and he wound up with 11-07, which put him just inside check range in 36th.

"I ran to my area and ran through a series of baits," he said. "I slowed down and threw a lizard. I tried a ChatterBait. I swam a jig. My co-angler had 13-07 and he kept a ChatterBait in his hand all day."

Eventually, Browning landed three keepers on a Z-Man/Evergreen Jackhammer and flipped two others from reeds with a Z-Man Turbo Crawz.

Still, it was a disappointing start and forced him to examine his equipment choices.

"I had to have something change for day 2," he said. "I knew (day 1) was the day to have a big bag. I felt like I'd shot myself in the foot and had to survive."

He had been using a 7-foot medium-heavy casting rod with a 6.4:1 reel, but found he was overmatched by the frisky fish on day 1.

"I just never was moving enough line and wasn't getting a hook in those fish," he said. "I had to make some type of adjustment. That's my go-to rig for open-water ChatterBait. I normally use that 6.4:1 reel on ChatterBaits, but with those pre-spawners when they hit, they shot out like they were on fire."

For day 2, he went with a heavy-action 7-foot, 10-inch crankbait rod and a 7.5:1 ratio reel. It turned out to be the right combination. He only got five bites, but one was a 5-pounder late in the day and another was a 3-pounder after that to help him get to 16-01, which was the biggest stringer on moving day.

"It was one of those deals where that little adjustment equipment wise put me in a better position to take those fish on," he said.

He struggled to trigger bites on the morning of day 3 and at 12:30, he had one small keeper in his livewell. The afternoon bite had been key on the first two days so he was banking on more opportunities arising.

"I had to just hope I'd be able to capitalize on a few bites," he said. "My first two fish in the afternoon were both 5s and I felt like one more gave me a chance to win."

He tacked on a 2 3/4-pounder and a 2-pounder, just enough to cap off a 16-08 stringer and beat day-2 leader Ken Iyobe by just over a pound.

Winning Pattern Notes

> The eelgrass was the key component to Browning's success, along with his track record of success at the lake. The falling water temperature also helped as it went from 69 degrees in practice 65 degrees during the tournament. "A lot of guys were fishing reed lines on the bank, but they were the buck bass that had moved in first," he said. "I just didn't think that was the way to win. I don't know if I was being hard headed, but I didn't think a limit of bucks would get you where you needed to be."

> The stretch he fished was roughly a quarter-mile long and he'd go back and forth, stopping to concentrate on spots where there were holes along the edge. "Every day I'd get a key bite in one of those spots," he added.

> He tried to stay on the outside of his waypoints and made 45-degee angled casts into the eelgrass and worked his bait toward the edge. "I tried to parallel the edge, but it seemed like they wanted it in the grass and coming to open water."

Winning Gear Notes

> Vibrating jig gear (day 1): 7' medium-heavy St. Croix Legend Tournament Sweeper Spinnerbait casting rod, Lew's BB1 Pro Speed Spool casting reel (6.4:1 ratio), 16-pound Gamma Edge fluorocarbon line, 3/8-oz. Z-Man Evergreen Jackhammer (black/blue in morning; white in afternoon), Z-Man Razor Shadz (white), Z-Man Diezel Minnowz (black/blue) trailers.

> Vibrating jig gear (days 2-3): 7'10" heavy-action St. Croix Legend Tournament Magnum Cranker casting rod, Lew's SuperDuty G Speed Spool casting reel (7.5:1 ratio), same line (20-pound), same Jackhammer, same trailers.

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success - "Utilizing my (Raymarine) electronics in shallow water. You don't hear about guys saying that, but in 3 to 4 feet of water, to be able to see that grass and know it was eelgrass, that was the key."

> Performance edge - "My Power-Poles were key with how the wind blew every day. I utilized them to slow down and also making the equipment change after day 1."
