It's been nearly 10 years since Tim Horton notched the last of his three tour-level victories and almost 2 years since he's posted a Top-25 finish. He'll almost certainly end that latter run of futility this weekend and he appears poised to halt the former, as well.

The veteran from Alabama moved to the top of the leaderboard on day 2 of the Lake Okeechobee Bassmaster Elite Series in Florida as he caught a 30-04 stringer that pushed his 2-day total to 56-03. He'll enter the weekend with an advantage of nearly 8 pounds over Ott DeFoe, the day-1 leader, and more than 13 pounds over everybody else.

"It was just a special day," the veteran from Alabama said. "Realistically you're not going to land all of the good ones I had on, but today I did."

DeFoe's 17-03 haul was 14 pounds lighter than what he'd caught the previous day and he slipped to 2nd with a 48-06 total.

Dean Rojas climbed from 21st to 3rd with a 25-04 bag that gave him a 43-01 aggregate. He shared that position with Floridian Cliff Prince, who's caught back-to-back 21-pound-plus bags.

Stephen Browning, who was 2nd after day 1, dropped to 5th with 42-09 after catching 15-12.

Here's a look at the Top 12 after 2 days of the 4-day event, with deficit margin from the leader indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Tim Horton: 56-03
2. Ott DeFoe: 48-06 (7-13)
3. (tie) Dean Rojas: 43-01 (13-02)
4. (tie) Cliff Prince: 43-01 (13-02)
5. Stephen Browning: 42-09 (13-10)
6. Greg Hackney: 39-11 (16-08)
7. Jesse Tacoronte: 39-00 (17-03)
8. Randall Tharp: 38-08 (17-11)
9. Fletcher Shryock: 37-04 (18-15)
10. Jason Williamson: 36-14 (19-05)
11. Chad Pipkens: 36-00 (20-03)
12. Micah Frazier: 35-12 (20-07)

Jesse Tacoronte, a Florida rookie with vast high-level experience in his home state, made the biggest upward move of the day as he catapulted from 78th to 7th with a 28-04 sack. Micah Frazier (52nd to 12th with 22-04) and Fletcher Shryock (28th to 9th, 20-04) also made impressive jumps.

Competitors who went the other way in the standings included Paul Mueller (7th to 42nd, 7-08), rookie Skylar Hamilton (9th to 45th, 8-9) and Brent Ehrler (12th to 37th, 10-06).

The vast majority of the anglers who survived the day-2 cut to the Top 51 are fishing the North Shore, but that group doesn't include Horton or Rojas and DeFoe's primary locales are also to the south. Quite a few big fish were pulled from beds during the afternoon, which may indicate that a late wave of spawners is moving into the shallows.

Horton needed assistance from tournament director Trip Weldon (left) and emcee Dave Mercer to display his massive limit to the weigh-in crowd.

The day-3 weather forecast again calls for partly cloudy skies with high temperatures in the low to mid 80s. The wind will switch directions and come out of the south, but will remain relatively mild.

The field will be reduced to the Top-12 following Saturday's weigh-in. The winner will be determined Sunday based on highest cumulative weight.

Horton Confident

> Day 2: 5, 30-04 (10, 56-03)

Horton would've made the cut with ease even if he'd zeroed on day 1. He doubts he can replicate his day-2 bag, but believes he's around enough quality fish to get through the weekend.

"I don't know about 30, but I think somewhere in the 20s is still possible," he said. "The think I'm most excited about is the weather – if we'd had a lot of wind it could've really messed that place up, but it looks like we're not going to get that."

He caught his best fish of the day, an 8-plus-pounder, shortly after he'd made his first pitch with his Klone Crawsome soft-plastic crayfish imitation. He then endured a lull for several hours until the action really picked up at about 11 o'clock.

His second-largest fish weighed nearly 7 pounds and the other three were in the 5-pound range.

"It wasn't wide-open crazy and I only caught maybe 12 to 15 keepers. It did get better as the day went on, though."

A 6 1/2-pounder caught at the end of the day kept 2nd-place Ott DeFoe's deficit from being even greater.

He's sharing his large, grassy area with just one other competitor. He said there were several guide boats in there on day 1, but they stayed away today.

"That was just a class move by those guys," he said.

He's seeking his second career victory at Okeechobee – he won a Bassmaster Tour event at the Big O in 2004.

2nd: Late Kicker Helped DeFoe

> Day 2: 5, 17-03 (10, 48-06)

DeFoe would've been much further behind Horton had he not caught a 6 1/2-pounder with 5 minutes remaining in the day.

"It was just one of those deals where you're fishing to kill time before you go in," he said. "It was my biggest bite of the day by far – I only had one other one over 3. I missed several bites this morning, but none felt like really big ones."

He said he caught more fish than on day 1, when he weighed his tournament-best 31-03 sack, but the quality had greatly dissipated.

"My first place yesterday, where I caught one of the 8-pounders, I started there again and caught 10 fish, but they probably didn't weigh much more than 8 pound combined.

"Where I'm fishing, the fish are moving – I think they're in transition. I saw some things that were promising, but I couldn't get it to happen today. Maybe it'll be better tomorrow."

He went from being more than 4 pounds ahead to almost 8 behind in 1 day, but he knows that isn't fatal on a big-fish venue such as Okeechobee.

"On paper, it looks like Timmy's going to make it really hard on everybody, but he could go out tomorrow and have a pretty good day and catch 20, and I could catch 30 again," he said. "Or it could be the opposite and he could build so much of a lead that nobody can catch him."

3rd: Big Jump by Rojas

> Day 2: 5, 25-04 (10, 43-01)

Rojas' day-2 stringer was nearly 7 pounds heaver than the one he weighed the previous day. The 9-pounder he wrangled accounted for most of that increase.

"That'll do it every time," he said. "The day started off pretty slow and then I caught that one at about 9:30, and then they started biting at about 11:30. I filled my limit and I was able to upgrade a couple times before I came in."

He also had a 6-pounder among the 12 keepers he boated. The other three he weighed were in the 3- to 4-pound class.

Cliff Prince was the only angler other than Horton to catch more than 20 pounds on each of the first 2 days.

"I'm in one of the only places in the lake that has the right grass and they're just coming in – some are spawning and some are pre-spawn. The water's pretty dirty – it's not clear at all. There's no way you can see any of them."

He trails Horton by a little over 13 pounds, but he's not conceding anything.

"This is Florida and things can change quickly. There's always the potential of catching a really big bag."

3rd: Prince Consistent

> Day 2: 5, 21-06 (10, 43-01)

Prince is the only competitor other than Horton who'd topped the 20-pound mark on both days.

"I've had 2 really good days and I hope to put 2 more together just like them," he said. "It definitely changed today, though. I caught them yesterday just fishing and today I caught three of my better ones sight-fishing.

"The new moon's coming and I feel like there's a new wave (of spawning fish) coming up from what I saw late this afternoon. It'll be interesting to see what happens tomorrow."

He had about 15 or 16 pounds in his livewell at 1:30, then upgraded considerably by picking off the trio of bedding fish. His bag was topped by a 7-pounder.

"I'm fishing (the North Shore) in the crowds, and then I have another area where I haven't really seen any other competitors. That's been kind of my backup deal and it still is, but I hope to catch some in there tomorrow. That's kind of where I've seen it happening."

Both his day-1 and day-2 bags have been highlighted by a 7-pounder.

"I've fished pretty clean. I've missed some bites on a topwater, but I don't know how big they were. They could've been 14-inchers."

58th: Chapman's Slump Continues

> Day 2: 5, 9-11 (10, 26-09)

Brent Chapman put himself in good position to advance to Saturday when he sacked 16-14 on Thursday, but he came in more than 7 pounds lighter on day 2 and missed the cut by 7 places. The 2012 Angler of the Year has now finished out of the money in 10 consecutive derbies.

"What's so frustrating is that Gary Klein, Boyd Duckett and Alton Jones Jr. (all of whom caught good bags) were all fishing the same water," he said. "It's just a matter of adjusting.

"The way the conditions were today, I thought what I was doing was going to be better and I got too dialed in to one technique. I kept thinking they'd bite when the sun came out and it warmed up. I did catch a 4-pounder, and that probably messed me up even more."

That was the only fish he caught that weighed over 2 pounds. He'd handled 15 that were 2-plus on day 1.

"I've never had a slump like this and it's pretty hard to hold my head high right now. I'll try to get away and do some fun-fishing somewhere during this break we've got coming up and maybe I can get myself re-energized."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 110 anglers, 105 limits (2 more than day 1), 2 threes, 1 two, 1 one, 1 zero (1 more than day 1).

> A 9-03 hawg caught by Micah Frazier was the largest fish to come to the scale on day 2.
