John Cox often claims that the quality bags he brings to the scale day after day on the FLW Tour are mostly attributable to luck. The reality, however, is there has to be a lot more than fortune involved to do it as frequently as he does.

The bottom line is that the low-key Floridian is one of the top shallow-water fishermen in the game, and he's proving it once again in the second event of the season at Lake Hartwell. He weighed a day-best 20-05 on Friday to take over the lead at the midway point with a 2-day total of 37-01.

His bag was topped by a 6-11 bruiser that he caught off a dock early this morning while idling toward a bedding fish he'd marked the previous day. Most anglers would've tried to duplicate such a bite, but not Cox. He always listens to his instincts.

"I hadn't thrown to any docks all tournament," he said. "I knew it was a fluke, so I never threw to another one the rest of the day."

He'll take a lead of 2-04 into the weekend in pursuit of his second Tour victory and his sixth Top-10 finish in the last seven regular-season derbies. His closest pursuer is day-1 leader Darrel Robertson, whose 14-07 haul (nearly 6 pounds lighter than his day-1 stringer) left him with a 34-13 aggregate.

Larry Nixon is another pound back in 3rd with 33-13 after boxing 14-09. Blake Smith moved up two places to 4th with 33-06 on the strength of a 15-04 sack.

Clark Wendlandt rounded out the Top 5 with 33-00 (15-07 on day 2).

Here's a look at the current Top 10, with red numbers in parentheses indicating deficit margin from the leader.

1. John Cox: 37-01
2. Darrel Robertson: 34-13 (2-04)
3. Larry Nixon: 33-13 (3-04)
4. Blake Smith: 33-06 (3-11)
5. Clark Wendlandt: 33-00 (4-01)
6. Peter Thliveros: 32-02 (4-15)
7. Anthony Gagliardi: 31-10 (5-07)
8. Jamie Horton: 31-04 (5-13)
9. Bryan Thrift: 31-02 (5-15)
10. Scott Martin: 30-13 (6-04)

Good sight-fishing conditions were present for the second straight day and several anglers were convinced that more fish had moved up overnight. Weights were down somewhat overall, however, as many of the more cooperative spawners had been picked off the previous day.

Gagliardi, fishing in his home state of South Carolina, made a huge leap to get inside the Top 10 after starting the day in 76th place. His 19-08 stringer was exceeded only by Cox's bag.

Peter Thliveros joined Cox and Gagliardi as newcomers to the Top 10 as he moved up 18 spots with a 16-13 sack. Falling out were Charlie Evans (4th to 111th with just one fish for 1-11 on day 2), Tom Redington (7th to 38th, 8-12) and Chris Baumgardner (9th to 82nd, three fish for 5-15).

Cox thinks he might have an idea as to what to do if it rains on day 3.

The day-3 weather forecast calls for rain and thunder in the Anderson, S.C. area. The air temperature will top out at about 67 degrees.

The 20 anglers who survived today's cut will compete for 10 spots in final-day field. The winner will be determined Sunday based on highest cumulative weight.

Cox has More Pegged

> Day 2: 5, 20-05 (10, 37-01)

Cox caught another 19 keepers after pulling his bruiser off the dock. The other four he took to the scale, all in the 3 1/4-pound class, were fish he'd looked at.

"After I caught them yesterday, I just kind of looked around for more for today," he said. "Today I caught them and looked for more for tomorrow. I found another 17 or 18 pounds."

He's had plenty of company in his areas, but that actually helped him on day 2.

"There were two fish I didn't know were there, but I watched guys stay on them for awhile. When they gave up, I went over there and caught them almost immediately."

He has a backup plan if his sight-fishing program gets thwarted by the inclement weather.

Darrel Robertson caught all of his day-2 weight off the beds.

"The last 2 days were perfect sight-fishing days. I don't know how much it's going to rain or how much the wind is going to blow, but I think I've got enough fish marked that I should be able to catch some. We'll have to see what it does.

"I actually had another good bite going when it was raining (on a practice day for a previous Hartwell event). I was thinking, Man, if it would just rain!''

2nd: Robertson Forced to Look

> Day 2: 5, 14-07 (10, 34-13)

Robertson thought the dock-skipping pattern that he developed during practice would produce on day 2, but that didn't transpire.

"I couldn't get a bite doing that – every fish I caught today came off the beds," he said. "It looked to me like a perfect day for that, but it didn't work out that way.

"I could see fish up under the docks, but they wouldn't pay any attention (to his baits). When you're sitting there with a 9-pound stringer and you know there's a 4-pounder under there and he won't bite, that's frustrating."

He'll likely do some looking and skipping on day 3 – perhaps the gloomier weather will entice the dock-dwellers to chomp.

"I'd say half the fish I caught today just came up and got on the beds, and hopefully there'll be some more of that tomorrow."

He knows where one good one resides: He hooked and lost a 3 1/2-pound spot this afternoon.

"When you miss a largemouth it'll usually go back to the bed, but a spot won't go back right away. That one would've helped me by maybe a pound and a half – it's a good fish.

"That's all I've got for tomorrow, so we'll make the rest up as we go."

3rd: Nixon's Fish Shrunk a Bit

> Day 2: 5, 14-09 (10, 33-13)

Nixon stayed with the same routine he'd plied on day 1 (he's not sight-fishing at all), but his day-2 fish averaged about a pound less.

"It was such a funny day and I can't explain those fishing going down in size," he said. "In practice the bigger ones bit every day. Today I thought I'd catch three big ones and two decent ones, but that didn't happen."

He started the day throwing a jerkbait and picked up a 2 1/2-pounder before settling into his more methodical pattern. He weighed four spotted bass and one largemouth and his bag was topped by a 4-pounder.

Larry Nixon landed in the No. 3 spot for the second straight day.

"We're fixing to get some weather tomorrow, so I'll have some other baits tied on and I'll be prepared for a little bit different action. I think I can hang in there and I think I've got a chance to win this thing if I can have one more big day.

"I haven't seen anybody else doing what I'm doing, so I can do it anywhere I want to go."

4th: Smith Catching 'Em in All Stages

> Day 2: 5, 15-04 (10, 33-06)

Smith moved up two places in the standings even though his bag was almost 3 pounds lighter than his day-1 weight.

"Everything about what I'm doing changes – I'm catching them in all stages (of the spawn)," he said. "For the most part I've been very blessed. I've got some fish marked for tomorrow, but I think Sunday would be a grind.

"The elements are making it harder to sight-fish every day and the fish aren't moving up until later in the day. On Sunday they might not move untio the last half-hour."

He's looked at about half the fish he's caught so far and has caught some from as deep as 6 or 7 feet. He targets pre- and post-spawners in the morning and works on the bed-fish for the remainder of the day.

He had a small limit of spots before he started looking on day 2 and ended up culling all of them.

"After I hit 15 pounds I put my rod down," he said. "I've basically stopped fishing at about 1:30 on both days. I did stick one at the end of the day today that helped me make a small cull, just because I don't know what the condtions are going to be like tomorrow.

"If I can keep catching 15 a day I think I'll have a shot at winning."

111th: Just 1 for Evans

> Day 2: 1, 1-07 (6, 20-03)

Charlie Evans, the 66-year-old former FLW president and CEO who was 4th after day 1, managed just a single bite on day 2 and went plummeting down the standings sheet.

"I could only catch them (on a wacky-rigged Zoom Trick Worm) late in the day and they'd just started to move when I had to leave," he said. "I have no excuses – for 5 days (3 practice and 2 competition) I tried to figure out some way to catch them early and I couldn't unlock the puzzle. I guess I just need more experience on the water.

"But I had a blast. I fished clean and I had a great time. I just didn't find enough stuff."

His standing after day 1 was his highest ever in a Tour event.

"Even though I'm mad about what happened today, it was fun to beat on them for 1 day. Now I'm looking forward to the next tournament at Beaver."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 167 anglers, 140 limits (10 fewer than day 1), 13 fours, 8 threes, 1 two, 3 ones, 2 zeroes (one more than day 1).

> Three Canadian anglers made the cut – brothers Chris and Cory Johnston and Jeff Gustafson.

> Jay Yelas has started the season with back-to-back bombs and thinks he may already be eliminated from Forrest Wood Cup contention. The pre-spawn pattern in dirty water he attempted to run this week proved ineffective. To read his competition wrap-up, click here to visit Pro View Reports.
