Lake Okeechobee in his home state of Florida serves as Brandon McMillan's home waters, but he's real comfortable every time he ventures the 440 miles north to Lake Seminole.
"I really don't know why I do well there – I just like it," McMillan said after winning the final Bassmaster Southern Open of 2015 on the Georgia-Florida border lake and wrapping up the circuit's points title. "It's special.
"I've got a good friend up there, Chad Prough. It's his home lake and through just brainstorming and talking with him, I've learned a lot about how to fish it."
The win was his second triple A-level triumph at Seminole (he won a Southeastern Rayovac there in the spring of 2012). He caught massive bags on the first 2 days to establish a big lead at the cut, then boxed a pedestrian stringer on the final day that was more than enough to keep his pursuers at bay.
His 49-05 total left him almost 4 pounds clear of his good friend Randall Tharp, with whom he spends many winter days fishing at Okeechobee. It earned him a prize package valued at more than $52,000 and a berth in the 2016 Bassmaster Classic.
Here's how he did it.
Practice
Needing just a decent finish at Seminole to finish among the Top 5 in the points and earn a 2016 Elite Series slot, McMillan spent a week and a half practicing for the event. In hindsight, despite the stellar result, he says that was too much.
"I came up early because I knew it was going to be brutally tough, and before it was over I was all spun out," he said. "I was a ball of nerves and I didn't know what I was going to day (when day 1 arrived).
"I knew I was going to flip primarily and throw a little topwater – those were my two main deals. I wasn't sure if I could get five bites in a day because I couldn't find good concentrations of fish. The better areas were community holes and they were hard to get into. When you've got a line of hydrilla that's a half-mile long and it's got 25 boats on it, it's rough."

It wasn't until late on day 1 when McMillan discovered the pattern that would carry him to victory.
"Most of what I fished was kind of out in the Flint River, right on the edge of the channel," he said. "There were these little ditches running through the flats, and I just stayed around them and that'd be where I got the bites.
"The fish were aggressive, but there just weren't a lot of them in any one place. I never could go back and get bit in the same place 2 days in a row."
His opening-day stringer, all compiled within about an hour and a half after lunchtime, contained a fish that weighed just under 7 pounds. It put him in 2nd place – a half-pound behind leader Bobby Lane.
He started day 2 in the same place and fished for about 90 minutes without a bite. Then he relocated to a place where he'd gotten three bites in an hour in practice but had been fruitless on day 1, and amassed his entire bag (four 3 1/2-pounders and one that pushed 6) over two visits there. Lane faltered that day, as did several other competitors who'd caught big sacks on day 1, and he had a 7-pound advantage when the weigh-in was complete.
He got a combined total of 19 bites over the first day and exceeded that number on day 3, but only put six of them in the boat and all were run-of-the-mill keepers.
"I just kept swinging and missing and I only had two fish at 12 o'clock," he said. "I sat down and drank a Mt. Dew and my first thought was that I was going to be reading on BassFan on Sunday about how I had an epic meltdown and blew a 7-pound lead."
He boxed another keeper a few minutes later, then returned to his starting spart and grinded out two more over the final 2 hours of the day.
"Once I caught my fifth one I felt pretty relieved," he said. "If I got beat, I got beat, but at least I caught five. What I really didn't want was to end up weighing only 14 fish and losing by 2 pounds.
"I felt even better when I got back to the dock and everybody was talking about what they had, but that 1-hour drive to Bass Pro Shops (for the weigh-in) was still pretty long."

"I was on my way back (to the launch) and I took my co-angler to a place where I'd had a few bites, but I wasn't going to flip there," he said. "When you're doing something like that and you catch that fish, I guess you're just meant to win."
The Bottom Line
> Main factor in his success – "The deal was finding those little fingers that ran across the flats."
> Performance edge – "I'd have to say my boat and motor – I run a Ranger Z520C and I'm in love with that (Evinrude) G2 motor."
Notable
> McMillan is fairly certain he'll compete on the Elite Series next year. "It's defnitely been my goal to fish over there and it's pretty hard just to qualify, so it'd be hard to turn it down," he said. "Still, I need to find some (sponsorship) money, and that's easier said than done."
> He works as a UPS driver and will have 10 years with the company come next May, which means his retirement funds will be vested. Therefore, assuming he opts to compete on the Elite Series, he'll do everything possible to hang onto the job through the first few months of the season. "Even if it only ends up being a couple hundred a month, I don't want to throw that (retirement) money away," he said.
> He'll be out of his preferred element for the Classic at Oklahoma's Grand Lake in early March, but that doesn't dim his enthusiasm for the event. "It's probably going to be about 11 degrees and my south Florida butt will be frozen, but I'm stoked."
