Clark Wendlandt came into this week hoping to maintain his position in the point standings and clinch a Forrest Wood Cup berth. Now, he’s focused on heading out of the Washington, D.C., area with a win.

After catching 14-13 on day 1, the three-time Angler of the Year who’s enjoying a great bounce-back year after enduring a heart attack last season, tacked on 17-13 today to take over the lead with 32-10 at halfway point of the Potomac River FLW Tour.

“I felt good coming here,” Wendlandt said. “This is about the coolest place we fish with all of the history on the river. It’s usually a good fishery, but it’s definitely tougher this year. It’s still a cool place. There’s no place like this.”

Maryland native Bryan Schmitt, always a threat on his home waters of the Potomac, moved up one spot to 2nd with 30-14 after bagging 15-09. Adrian Avena, the day-1 leader, slipped two spots to 3rd with a 14-00 limit today, but is less than 2 pounds behind Wendlandt with 30-12.

Darrel Robertson jumped from 31st to 4th with a 15-12 stringer that gave him 28-03. Jason Lambert caught the tournament’s biggest bag so far – an 18-00 sack that nearly doubled his day-1 production – and advanced 103 spots to 5th with 27-03.

Here's a look at the Top 10 halfway through competition, with deficit margin from Wendlandt indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Clark Wendlandt: 32-10
2. Bryan Schmitt: 30-14 (1-12)
3. Adrian Avena: 30-12 (1-14)
4. Darrel Robertson: 28-03 (4-07)
5. Jason Lambert: 27-02 (5-08)
6. Scott Canterbury: 26-15 (5-11)
7. Jim Moynagh: 26-14 (5-12)
8. Jeff Sprague: 26-11 (5-15)
9. Randy Haynes: 26-11 (5-15)
10. John Voyles: 26-10 (6-00)

The race for Angler of the Year will conclude tomorrow with either Scott Martin taking home his first career AOY or John Cox winning on tiebreakers. Cox finished 42nd today.

Martin, who made the cut in 11th, can clinch the AOY outright with a 19th-place finish or better. If Martin slips to 20th, he’ll be tied with Cox with 1,095 points. FLW Tour rules dictate ties in the points standings are resolved first by total weight caught during the season, then total fish caught, then total live fish.

Counting today’s weights, Cox has 88 fish for 252-11 this season while Martin has 85 fish for 240-15.

Zack Birge locked up the Rookie of the Year award today with his 77th-place finish. He wound up 29th in points. He was already qualified for the Forrest Wood Cup after winning the Rayovac Series Championship last fall.

Jeff Sprague was among the biggest movers today, jumping from 75th to 8th with a 16-00 stringer. Andy Morgan came from 61st to make the cut in 14th with 26-05 while Rusty Trancygier moved up from 48th to 17th with a 14-05 bag.

For several anglers who had strong starts on Thursday, day 2 brought different results. Troy Morrow fell from 2nd to 30th after bagging just three fish. Travis Fox dropped from 4th to 102nd with only two fish. Andrew Upshaw came in one shy of a limit and finished 44th after being in 7th coming into today. Jay Yelas dropped 89 places to 99th as his spot dried up and he weighed in four smallmouth for 5-04.

Some rain Thursday night dirtied up some areas, especially in a few creeks, but conditions were about the same today. With the forecast calling for steady rain Saturday, some of the leaders may be left to scramble if water conditions deteriorate.

The field will be reduced to the Top 10 after Saturday’s round and only the Top 10 will compete on Sunday when the winner will be determined by cumulative weight.

Big Bite Key For Wendlandt

> Day 2: 5, 17-13 (10, 32-10)

Wendlandt already has a runner-up finish to his credit this year from Lewis Smith Lake. Now, he’s after his third Top-10 outcome at the Potomac. He was 2nd in 2005 and 7th in 2012.

“Heck yeah, I’m happy,” he said Friday. “It definitely wasn’t easier today, but I had a big fish and a 5-14 goes a long way here. I had good, quality fish besides that one, too.”

Bryan Schmitt thinks he can have a big day Saturday if the conditions are right.

He’s unsure whether the area he’s fished the first 2 days will still be productive over the weekend.

“If this wasn’t a tidal fishery there’s no way my pattern would hold up,” he added. “The fact that the water is constantly moving in and coming up and changing the location of the fish, there’s definitely an opportunity for it to work.”

He said he caught most of his weight in the morning and his kicker came pretty close to where he’d caught other fish. He said he has three baits working and he’s targeting a variety of cover.

2nd: Schmitt Glad To Be In Mix

> Day 2: 5, 15-09 (10, 30-14)

Consistency is going to be a key element to any strong finish this week and few have the history of success at the Potomac that Schmitt does. He’s not disappointed that he’s not leading at this point. He’s pleased with how things have progressed and if the weather starts to take on a bigger role over the weekend, that could play into his hands.

“That was the goal,” he said after posting another 15-pound day. “I went to where I caught 15 on day 1 and it was muddy. I went to another spot and it was fishable. It’s a place I know has fish and it had nobody on it. I caught a decent one quick and my co-angler caught a couple nice ones.”

He was admittedly rattled, but after his co-angler (Todd Lee) finished his limit, Lee opted to stop fishing in order to let Schmitt have every chance to catch what he could.

“I just grinded and grinded and caught my weight,” Schmitt added. “My co-angler had 16 pounds so they’re there, but I’m scared the wind might take it away from me. I just wanted a shot going into the weekend so I do have that.

“There’s definitely a 17-pound bag to be caught there if I sit there all day.”

4th: Robertson Saved Best for Last

> Day 2: 5, 15-12 (10, 28-03)

Robertson figured he had enough time to make two casts before checking in this afternoon. Turned out he only needed one.

Stopping just short of the off-limits area by the take off point, he caught 4 1/2-pounder that gave him a 2 1/2-pound upgrade and has him in contention entering the weekend.

Darrel Robertson caught a kicker on his last cast today.

“If I don’t catch that fish, I bet I’d have finished 21st,” he joked, noting how tight the leaderboard is from 6th place through 20th.

His surge up the leaderboard has also put him in the mix for a Cup berth. He needs to win this week to pull into a tie for the final spot with Clent Davis. Tiebreakers would be needed to resolve the final Cup berth.

He spent more time today in the area that yielded five keeper bites on Thursday. He’s been fishing a weightless Senko and also a shallow-running crankbait.

“I think I happened to run across some places with better fish and hopefully I figured out something,” he said. “There were several good people fishing in the creek I’m in, but I think they only caught 10 or 11 pounds and I don’t believe any of them made the cut.”

He’s wary of the weather forecast for Saturday since he doesn’t have a lot of Plan-B type places to go to in the event his best area doesn’t produce.

“I don’t want a whole lot of wind blowing for what I’m doing,” he said. “Today, I didn’t have a fish at 10 a.m. and I started to get worried. I went to where I caught a couple yesterday and my co-angler catches a 3 and a 4 and I started to question whether I knew how to fish or not.”

5th: 5-Pounder Boosts Lambert

> Day 2: 5, 18-00 (10, 27-03)

Lambert caught his second-biggest bag of the season today, thanks to a 5-03 kicker, as he tried to finish what’s been a down year on a high note.

“I just got lucky today and caught a big one,” he said. “I should’ve stayed in an area yesterday, but I left too early and didn’t stay long enough. I camped there today and it worked out a little better.

“You have a shot and that’s all you can ask for. If I can get one more lucky bite one more day, you have legit shot. I’m pretty satisfied with it.”

He also went away from a frog and threw a swim jig and ChatterBait more today. He had seven bites and had a 4-pound break off.

Jason Lambert concentrated on two different areas today.

“I had a shot at having a real big bag,” he said. “I fished two areas all day long. One area I’m sharing, but the other I have to myself.”

He’s a little concerned about one area getting dirty if it rains Saturday, but the other area is more protected and should be fine.

44th: Upshaw Baffled

> Day 2: 4, 9-01 (9, 23-09)

Upshaw was feeling confident heading out today after catching a dozen fish in the 2 1/2-pound class or better Thursday. He came in still unsure what happened to the area.

“My bite just never developed,” he said. “Today, I only got one of those bites and had four bites all day. It was one of those things.

“I fished the same stuff from day 1. I changed up a little and ran a little more tide today in an attempt to get into some areas where they were biting. I had five or six areas with good concentrations of fish and I figured if I ran to them enough they’d start biting. That didn’t happen until the end of the day.”

He needed to stay in the Top 20 in order to secure a berth in the Cup, but he’ll go into the offseason on the heels of four straight money finishes.

“It is frustrating, but it’s always nice to finish the year strong,” he said. “This was my best year yet so I can’t complain too much. I was telling my wife this is probably the most disappointing check I’ve ever gotten.”

Notable
