Gene Bishop describes himself as just an “average Joe” and an “old fishing bum,” even though he’s only 41 years old. From here on out, though, he’s content to be known as the first local angler to win a major B.A.S.S. event at Ross Barnett Reservoir, the 33,000-acre perpetually stained Pearl River impoundment near Jackson, Miss.

After a four-fish stringer on day 1 left him thinking he’d blown any shot he had at contending, he cracked back-to-back 20-pound stringers, including a tournament-high 26-01 on day 2, to win by nearly 1 1/2 pounds over Oklahoman Jay Brainard.

“This is nuts,” Bishop said, noting Sunday night that his phone hadn’t stopped ringing or buzzing with text messages. “I’ve never experienced anything like this. I’ve fished BFLs and other team-style tournaments for 20 years and I’ve always prayed that this day would come.”

A wave of cold weather preceded the tournament and had the fish that would normally be heading to their spawning hangouts waiting for the next warm front. That happened to coincide with the start of the event, but Bishop was slow to adjust.

“March has been extremely cold down here,” said Bishop, who hails from Ridgeland, Miss. “By now, it should be warm and fish should’ve been biting well. It was terribly cold in practice, but then we had three or four days of warm weather with a south wind and the fish flooded to the bank and that’s why people started catching them.”

Bishop, who owns a small carpet cleaning and installation business, relied mainly on a Texas-rigged 8-inch lizard to fool the fish he brought to stage. He targeted a half-mile long stretch of lily pad stems in 2 1/2 to 4 feet of water along the eastern shore where the spawners had pulled out to when they sensed their spawning areas were inundated with boat traffic.

“Part of the battle on that big flat is that it’s big and it can be tedious,” he said. “Sometimes you won’t be getting a lot of bites and you have to be patient because you can go a long time without a bite. It’s a not a big numbers deal there.”

He certainly made the most of the bites he got, though. Here’s how he did it.

Practice

Having spent so much time on Ross Barnett and being comfortable with knowing the season habits of the bass, Bishop opted to not put in a ton of practice time on the water.

“I know the place really well and I only spent two half-days over there,” he said. “It was different from what I expected, though. The water temperatures had been in the mid to upper 40s, but on day 1 of the tournament, it got up into the mid 50s and the fish just went nuts.

“I thought I’d have an advantage fishing the drops in front of the spawning flats, but they’d moved up and that’s why I struggled on day 1.”

Competition

> Day 1: 4, 8-13
> Day 2: 5, 26-01
> Day 3: 5, 21-00
> Total = 14, 55-14

Bishop opened the tournament focused on the typical staging areas out away from the bulrushes, but wasn’t successful in finding many takers. Meanwhile, other competitors were up tighter to shore and connecting with fish.

“They usually sit on that first break where you’re sitting in 4 feet and throwing up into 1 1/2,” he said. “I caught three little ones doing that because I was so anxious to get out there and try those spots.”

He came in with four fish for 8-13 and was 83rd after day 1, a dismal beginning to the event.

“I thought I was out of it, so I just went fishing (on day 2),” he said.

He did more than that. He figured out that with so many boats targeting the shallower bulrushes that some fish had flushed back out to a big flat where the bottom is covered with pad stems. He slowly dragged a soft plastic lizard across the bottom and filled the boat.

“It seemed like Luke Clausen and I were the only ones to figure it out,” he said.

The lizard was a no-brainer for Bishop as it’s been a trusted fish-catcher at Ross Barnett for some time.

“That’s just a special deal on Ross Barnett,” he said. “When it’s spring and those fish move up to spawn, there’s something about those big lizards that they can’t stand. I don’t know if they want to eat it or not, but they sure seem to hate it because when they hit it, it’s undeniable.”

He caught a 7-pounder within the first 10 minutes and stayed put all day, eventually adding a 6-pounder, a 5 and a pair of 4s to his livewell.

“It’s probably the best day I’ve ever had in a big tournament here,” he said. “Heck, it was the best day of fishing in my life.”

He did it in the face of howling winds, which blew out of the southeast. Without Power-Poles, he had to game plan to drift his way across his area to be able to fish it effectively. Other competitors who had the benefit of the shallow-water anchors struggled mightily in the harsh winds.

“I’ve done that before here,” he said. “I’d just drift for a half mile, then motor up and do again. It’s similar to a drift on (Lake) Erie, except I was in 2 1/2 feet of water.”

His 26-01 stringer rocketed him to the top of the leaderboard after day 2, a remarkable ascension on a day that saw previous leader Mike McClelland tumble out of the Top 12.

He figured his massive bag would be a one-time deal and he’d have to scrape together a limit on Saturday, but he was pleasantly surprised to find his area had replenished with more quality fish for the final day.

“I’m thinking there’s no way I could duplicate what I did,” he said. “I thought I caught them all, but another wave came in overnight. I was dumbfounded. It was a classic case of ‘smoke ‘em one day and come out and bomb the next.’ I thought I’d be one of those guys, which is why I don’t believe it could happen without the help from the Man upstairs.”

He returned to the key stretch from day 2, but went in shallower and caught a 4-pounder off a clump of cattails that tended to hold fish. He caught a few smaller male fish as well.

“I went back out to the stems and went two hours without a bit there,” he said, noting he then concentrated more on the shallow bulrushes.

He said the spectator boats that were watching him posed a bit of a challenge as some were unknowingly getting in front of him and sliding over areas that held fish.

“I moved south about a half-mile and no other competitors had been in there that morning,” he said. “I went around a corner and the next 45 minutes was some of the most unbelievable fishing I’ve ever experienced. It was one 3 1/2-pounder after another.”

He easily got rid of the 13- and 14-inchers that were in his livewell and added a 4 1/2-pounder within the last hour of the day to get to 21 pounds.

“Every fish I caught was slam full of eggs,” he noted.

Winning Pattern Notes

> Bishop used the wind to his advantage in making long casts to maximize the time his bait was in the strike zone. “It was a big, giant flat of about 200 to 300 acres of 2- to 3-foot water with stems all over it,” he said. “I’d put the wind at my back and with a 1/4-ounce weight, I’d cast as far as I could. I could cover more water that way. It was a slow drag back to the boat. I could feel the lizard working through all the stems. They wanted it on the bottom and dragged right by their nose.”

Winning Gear Notes

> Lizard gear: 6’6” medium-heavy Castaway Rods Pro Sport casting rod, Shimano Curado E casting reel (7.1:1 gear ratio), 65-pound PowerPro braided line, 1/4-oz. unnamed tungsten worm weight, 5/0 Lazer TroKar EWG worm hook, 8” Zoom Lizard (junebug).

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – "Once I figured out they’d moved off that staging area where nobody fishes and knowing when I went back on that flat, if there’s a bunch of traffic on bank those fish will flush out. They’re almost like a flock of birds. When you run through a flock, they’re going to scatter. I always try to look around the edges of the community hole to see where they might have spooked to.”

> Performance edge – "My Minn Kota Fortrex. I couldn’t have held it into the wind without a good trolling motor.”

Notable

> He said he did his best to keep his focus despite fishing the same part of the lake as tour pros Tommy Biffle, Jason Christie, Clausen and Fred Roumbanis. “I was fishing within sight of Biffle,” he said. “That was pretty crazy. I tried not to get too hyped up and be too much of a fan. I tried to stay focused.”

> He’s not planning on just showing up to the other two Central Opens in order to make his 2016 Bassmaster Classic berth official. “Some people are telling me to just launch the boat and throw a shakey-head around the ramp,” he said. “I’m going to give it my all and put in a good effort at both of them.”
